« Keith Foulke Attempting Comeback | Main | Nick Johnson Rumors »
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel talked to Brewers GM Doug Melvin about the team's second base situation. Rickie Weeks is out for the season with wrist surgery, but Melvin is not interested in the three free agent second basemen: Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek, and Damion Easley. Durham's agent called Melvin, saying his client would need a while to get ready. Melvin decided not to pursue Durham, who played for the Brewers last year. Easley's agent also reached out to no avail, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.
There have been no trade talks, either. Instead, the Brewers will mix and match with internal options at second base and go back to Weeks next year.

Easley was a class act the past couple seasons with the Mets, one of the guys I enjoyed seeing out there.. With Castillo's injury problems/struggles last year he got alot of playing time.. Unfortunately hes another year older and he struggled to play everyday down the stretch run for NY last year with nagging injuries.. I think he could be a very quality backup to SS/2B but to ask him to start or platoon is definitely pushing it.

Mark De Rosa. Shapiro wants him some Brewers prospects.

Maybe the Braves can work out a deal with the Brewers to send them a 2B and some pitching for Hart. I know they had some interest in him this past offseason. Just dreaming but maybe even a deal for Braun.

"Mark De Rosa. Shapiro wants him some Brewers prospects."
I could see the Brewers and Cardinals getting into a trade war over Mark DeRosa.

I'm fairly certain that Ray Durham would be a big upgrade over anything internal.

RaginCajun - Why would the brewers trade away an outfielder when they have viable options internally for years to come in the infield. Especially Hart who is fast and has a great arm.
And the Braun comment, I shouldnt even address, but I will. Your a moron, because even if the Brewers wanted to trade him, they couldnt cause he has a no trade clause for the next like 4 years.

I'm fairly certain he wouldn't be. He barely can move on the field anymore. They would be better off starting Gamel every day at 3B and moving Hall to 2B than picking up Durham. You take the same huge hit on defense for probably about the same offense.

Did you read my post? Obviously not....I said the Braun thing was "just dreaming." That means that I DO NOT think it will happen.
As for Hart....I simply stated that there was interest and even talks this past offseason about the Braves possibly trading for him. And what "internal options for years" are you talking about? You think that Ricky Weeks is a stud now that he's finally having a good year? Bill Hall who the Brewers don't have any faith in? A minor leaguer who has yet to do anything in AAA? Bottom line is the Brewers need pitching and they aren't going to get it trading a rack of bats. Some of those people will have to move.

Braun traded...?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
Thanks, that made my day.
If the Brewers want to be competitive in that division, they should make a trade for someone. Thats that.
Trading a pitching prospect for a guy like DeRosa would be an idea but it would depend on the prospect.

Yeah, I think that Braun is in that group of players (like Longoria, Upton, Bruce, etc.) that are signed cheaply and are just WAYYY too good to give up.
I guess you could argue that the Marlins dealt Cabrera when he was in a similar time in his career, but Braun is far more athletic and he's already under contract long term, so the price tag on Braun would be nearly insane.
Lets just say it this way: Any Braun deal starts with one of Hanson and Heyward, as well as four or five of Atlanta's next best prospects, unless they're willing to include both Hanson and Heyward. Do you still want to make that deal? I'm guessing not..
Although I could see Hart getting dealt reasonably soon, as he's put up some numbers (66 XBH in 2007, 71 XBH in 2008) but he's also struggled to become what the Brewers thought he would be.

Rajun, you can't just trade your right fielder for a second basemen. It opens up a hole in right field then. Who do you propose to go into right? Also why do we need pitching??? So far this season the rotation and the bullpen have been pretty solid especially with Hoffy now.
Ethic, who do you propose we trade for DeRosa? Shapiro isn't gonna send him packing cheap which means it'd be Jeffress or Scarpetta that'd get sent out. Personally I wouldn't part with either.
Rickie is a big loss, especially with his production this season, but that doesn't ruin our chances of getting to the postseason. I mean come on, the kid was a career .245 hitter. And if memory serves me correctly, the Brewers have won seven games in a row right?? Three of which were without Rickie.

"Just dreaming but maybe even a deal for Braun."
-Not a chance Braun is our franchise player and will spend the next 7 years at least in Milwaukee
And believe me.. most Brewers fans were wishing something like this would happen before the season even started.. we have one of the top prospects in baseball in Alcides Escobar just waiting for a chance to come up but being blocked at shortstop by JJ Hardy.. As soon as Weeks was hurt Escobar was switched to 2nd to see if he could make the transition.. Escobar is a better and more prototypical leadoff guy with great range and a cannon for an arm.. he will be the starting 2nd baseman within the next month guaranteed

Why would Brewer fans be happy that Weeks, who looked like he was emerging as the star that he was projected to be, got knocked out for the year?
This could be like when Corey Patterson was having a big year when he was like 22, then he got hurt and missed the rest of the year, and when he came back he just never quite seemed to be the same. Obviously Patterson's failure was caused by a multitude of factors, but getting seriously injured during your breakout season really can't help.

I never said I was happy he got knocked out. It was actually rather depressing for me since after years of struggles he looked like he'd put it together.
We'll see what happens scribble, hopefully he won't show the same unwillingness to test the surgically repaired wrist as he has in the past few seasons.
