Oh great, they break his arm and return us damaged goods.
BTw, my inside source has told me Walt Jocketty has contacted Billy Beane about a possible Matt Holliday to Cincinnati trade come July. Stay tuned...

If he's hurt, why not just stash him on the DL and keep him?

Kind of off topic but what exactly is the Rule 5 draft and why does it exist? I've heard it mentioned a lot but I'm a little hazy on the details.
Thanks.

BigRedOne, he was recently taken off the DL after his arm healed.
Yanksallday, if for nothing else the Rule 5 exists for one reason: Josh Hamilton. The Cubs took him in the Rule 5 then traded him to the Reds. The Reds also drafted Jarod Burton in the same Rule 5 draft.
Not all players are at the level of Hamilton and Burton. But teams are willing to take a chance. It's my understanding the Rule 5 draft are for players who aren't on 40 man rosters and have been in the minor leagues for five or more seasons.
