The Dodgers' Rotation

They're 15-8, in first place in the NL West, but the Dodgers face questions about a rotation that includes three ERAs of 5.50 or more. Behind Chad Billingsley and Randy Wolf, they have Clayton Kershaw, who hasn't pitched out the the fifth inning his last two starts, James McDonald, who has walked a batter an inning this year, and Eric Stults, who's allowing two baserunners an inning. Yahoo's Tim Brown takes stock of the rotation and how Ned Colletti will progress with it.

  • Brown says it's unlikely the Dodgers will add Pedro Martinez, Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez or Freddy Garcia.
  • One scout's analysis: "There's plenty of pitching available. None you'd want."
  • Brown suggests the Dodgers need a club like the Indians, Reds or Mariners to fall from contention so some quality arms become available.
  • If David Price pitches his way into the Rays' rotation, Jeff Niemann could become trade bait.
The Dodgers could rely on pitchers already in the organization. Hiroki Kuroda is rehabbing, though MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports the righty is likely weeks away from a return. Jason Schmidt is rehabbing too, according to GurnickJeff Weaver pitched well against the Padres last night and Eric Milton and Shawn Estes are stashed away in the minors.

Their rotation really isnt that bad once Kuroda gets back. The only week point will be Mcdonald and he could be replaced by Weaver, Milton or Schmidt. Yes I know that doesnt sound to encouraging, but Kershaws ERA will not stay over 5.50 and if they have one guy in their rotation thats a 5+ ERA it shouldnt hur them in the West.

same goes for the Phils rotations. Are the balls juiced or something?

Please trade for some good arms!
after seeing Mcdonald pitch so bad last night, i think he needs to be traded in a package deal.
He couldnt even make it out of the 2nd inning (not the first time).

Package of like Mcdonald, Hu, Repko, and possibly even Dewitt.

Don't panic Dodger fans. Kershaw will be just fine. Kuroda will hopefully be healthy in short order. Even McDonald is certainly capable of being a respectable 4/5 starter.

The worst thing the team could do is hit the panic button. No need to shed young, good talent for a short order fix.

Milanokis, do you really have to keep posting your half assed trade proposals? I'm probably not the only one getting sick of it.

Hu can't even bat his weight, Repko hasn't played baseball in ages, and Dewitt is pretty much a league average 2B or light hitting 3B at best. McDonald could get something in a trade, but probably not an ace like you think he commands. Then again, the Dodgers gave up last week's leftovers to get Manny Ramirez.

yeah, its only the beginning of the season. look what happened at the trade deadline last year and we made it to the NLCS. adding a pitcher at that time would be fine. lets see what torre can piece together with his internal options before unloading our next 6 years of talent on a soon-to-be free agent rental.

and if the dodgers want to pick up someone, we are currently $40+MM under last years payroll (right?), so we have some flexibility in picking up someone that way as well.

According to Cot's, the Dodgers are about $18M under last season's payroll.

some of you are forgetting that these ERAs are against AWFUL offenses as well.

granted, the Dodgers bat has been hot against guys like Peavy, Zito, Haren, The Unit, Matt Cain and even Roy Oswalt but the boys in blue are giving up 6 or 7 runs to the Giants and Padres.

I'm hoping that by mid to late July our roation will look something like this.

Billingsly
Lee, Oswalt, or Halladay
Kuroda
Wolf
Kershaw

with McDonald back in the bullpen where he was killer in the post season last year and the option to bring in Schmidt and Weaver in as an extra starter.

The idea that Halladay or Oswalt are available is media-fabricated. Don't expect them, or Lee, to change teams this year. About the only above-average starters available are Peavy and Bedard.

This is addressed to all the Dodgers fans who want to trade for a second, or maybe even a third ace (Billingsley. Is. An. Ace. And, Kershaw is on his way to being an ace). So, McDonald is getting lit up. This is the dumba-ssness that encouraged Kenny to give away Boone Logan for nothing (that package wasn't enough for Vazquez alone).

SMALL. SAMPLE. SIZE.

Guys, Dallas Braden and Doug Davis are NOT aces just because they have 2-something ERAs right now. The Pirates pitching staff is not the best in MLB. Emilio Bonifacio is not a crazy good hitter. I could go on and on.

Before any of you post your half-assed Halladay offers - it will not happen without AT A MINIMUM Clayton Kershaw coming the Jays way, and you'd still need to add another 2-3 legitimate prospects. Think about that before you start dreaming about a midseason rotation that includes Roy Halladay being traded from a very solid Blue Jays club.

and Dewitt is pretty much a league average 2B or light hitting 3B at best. McDonald could get something in a trade, but probably not an ace like you think he commands'

While I agree that im sick of his trades, Dewitt would have a CRAPLOAD of trade value, a 22 yr old who was a starting 2B and 3B on a playoff team, who has a 300-20-85/90 career average line. Mcdonald will be a mid of the rotation starter (and a good one), but for some reason he walks people like crazy. I think he not been strechted out(he was a reliever until 1 week before the season) and he should be in the pen as a 2 inning+ man. By the end of the season, he could be a starter again, but NO reason to ruin his confidence.

GScott, At least one of them will be out there. The Jays are playing WAY over their head(sorry 92-93) and they will fall, possibly needing to cut payroll. Simiarly to the 'Stros, they will NEED to cut payroll. Lee has been on the block and the Cleveland team could really get a lot of prospects if they trade a few pieces.

Finally, 92-93, Kershaw could be as good, if not better, than Halladay, AND HE IS A LEFTY. Doc is the best pitcher in baseball, no doubt, but you know that no one player is worth Kershaw in a trade right now, simply because of how high the Dodgers feel about him

the dodgers love mediocrity!

The dodgers pitching have been facing really bad offensive lineups and they still suck(except for bills), just imagine our piching versus the cardinals ,phils, etc. This team is only built to win the weak ass west, so to all dodger fans don't get your hopes up!

With all the problems in the rotation and the bullpen, and with a couple of key position players not hitting, the Dodgers are still 15-8. When a team has the second-best record in MLB one month into the season, and is on a pace to win 105 games, then it probably would not be the time to panic -- unless you happen to one of those other teams.

Kuroda will be back. Kershaw will have rookie growing pains, but even after a couple of wobbly starts, we know he still has great stuff. McDonald is an unknown, so we'll see. Little doubt he's going back to the bullpen, probably to be replaced with Weaver. If any of these moves don't work, the Dodgers will go shopping.

BTW, I was at that game last night. Manny hit one to the moon. One of these days, he's going to knock a ball over the pavilion roof. I hope I'm in the house when it happens.

I know you say your a dodger fan, but you sure as hell dont sound like it. Last yr, when we relied on Lowe(great for us), Kershaw in the pen in his first yr, Mcdonald in the pen, Maddux(who was washed up, and it was sad.) Lowe could have been key, but he had 2 bad pitches, which lost the game. We hoped for dewitt to do more than we should, and then we replaced him with Hudson, who has been the second best player thus far, behing Manny. Manny is acting like its August again. We had Bills struggle against the Phils last yr, but he has looked GREAT this yr.

This team is better than last yr, and they got to the NLCS. We dominated the Cubs, whom many thought would be the NL representive in the WS, but they got swept by us. We have a better offense, better D, and our pitching will be better after the trade deadline.

doc halladay the best pitcher in baseball? ummm no.

"but you know that no one player is worth Kershaw in a trade right now"

LOL. I can name AT LEAST 20.

“While I agree that im sick of his trades, Dewitt would have a CRAPLOAD of trade value, a 22 yr old who was a starting 2B and 3B on a playoff team, who has a 300-20-85/90 career average line.”

DeWitt was starting at third only because Garciaparra and LaRoche were hurt. He stayed there until the team overpaid to replace him with Casey Blake. DeWitt then filled in at 2nd when Kent got injured. He wasn’t really a starting player at either position; he just had to be used there because of a lack of options. Also, he has not carried a 300-20-85/90 line – he holds a .260/.339/.374/.713 mark. His minor league numbers also do not indicate anything that special either. Add in the sheer volume of solid 3B (the position he should be playing) and because Third is a position which should carry power potential, his value is limited. He is young and tradeable, but he will not carry anything close to a “CRAPLOAD” of trade value.

DeWitt's main trade values are: (1) he can play three infield positions respectably, (2) he has upside potential, and (3) he comes with a low cost contract. This makes him attractive to teams looking to dump expensive players. Add that up, and I believe come July DeWitt will be playing somewhere else.

No one player in baseball is worth Kershaw right now, realy, yankeesdodgerslakers4life? Better get off the happy juice cuz he's no better of a prospect than Joba,Buchholz, or Price and if Hanley Ramirez, Albert Pujols, Tim Lincecum, Dustin Pedroia and about 100 other mlb players were offered for Superstar Kershaw your GM Colletti would wet himself making the trade. You sound dumb by even suggesting that he could be better than Halladay. Try being realistic for once!

Joba?!?!? Hahaha...

Joba? Buchholz? Joba still cant hold a rotation spot, even though he should be there. Buchholz barely made the MLB roster. But your right, H. Ramirez, Pujols, Lincecum, and Pedoia would easily take Kershaw. However, how many are going to be traded? anyone? no, i didnt think so.

And for my Kershaw possibly being better than Halladay eventually, why not? They have a similar build, Kershaw is maybe a few inches shorter, but not much. Halladay has an amazing curve and good fastball, as does Kershaw. Kershaw is just 21 and will grow, but can throw 94 throughout the game. the bigger, the harder. therefore, he could throw 96 in a yr or 2, consistenly. He is a lefty, Halladay is a righty. Lefty have much more value than a righty in general. Halladay has an amazing change also, which is a pitch Kershaw learned this yr and has looked better as he continues to throw it. Kershaw had similar success to Lincecum in his first yr, and now look at Lincecum. So saying Kershaw could be better than Halladay in a few yrs isnt unrealasitic at all, espically if he could get tutoring for an ace, like Halladay.

Yankees is a psychic! Read my future!

wow... talk about immature.

Come on man, you are such a homer, open your eyes, stop being a push-over!

The dodgers pitching have been facing really bad offensive lineups and they still suck(except for bills), just imagine our piching versus the cardinals ,phils, etc. This team is only built to win the weak ass west, so to all dodger fans don't get your hopes up!

??? who cares?? wins are wins......In the playoffs you need 2 good pitcher and 1 solid 1.Kuroda in the 2nd half of last season was lights out and dominated against the Phils and Cubs in the playoffs!!Bills is pitching like an ace too! Kershaw is up and coming and could be a decent #3 come postseason. So as a Dodger fan i will get my hopes up cause there GREAT bullpen (which is #2 in the N.L) and great offense will help........hater
