I don't get it. I just don't get it. Hobgood?!
Posted by: milehigh78 | June 09, 2009 at 05:43 PM
This draft is insane so far. Sanchez, Hobgood, Wheeler, Minor... What the hell is going on?! Where's Matzek? Where's Turner? Where's Miller? Where's Scheppers? I'm confused. And as an O's fan, I'm disappointed. With so many good HS power arms available, Hobgood seems like a stretch. I should've known it, after all that talk from MacPhail about 'not worrying about money.' My a$$

Now Leake! Wow.
Guarantee Detroit, Boston, and New York are licking their respective lips. Tigers have their pick between Matzek, Turner, Miller, and Scheppers. Its gotta feel like Christmas.

Wish I was a Tigers fan right now. Love Turner.

On the plus side, my O's DID take a HS arm with upside. Still...

man i hope the pads can sign tate

I am a Tigers fan, and I too, love Turner.
Although, I would have liked Matzek a wee bit better...
But one question:
Do you think that more draftees should have been at the Draft, like Mike Trout?

I hate the cubs taking another player with a low contact rate. Especially one without much power. Drafting a guy in the 1st round who projects to be a very good defender is nice, but they could have just kept Felix Pie if they wanted speed and defense. Also the cubs have had big problems correcting this issue with prospects so its not easy to be very excited. I just wish the cubs would have used some top picks on power arms for the rotation. Theres still a lot of picks left though.

Someone during the chat asked about the Yankees Pick and his character issues.
"Although there are no concerns about his intensity on the field, some teams have been scared off by character issues. Heathcott’s father is in prison on drug charges and his mother is out of his life for similar reasons, which is an obvious red flag. He was also ruled academically ineligible for the playoffs last month."

not too hot on the sox pick, but whatev, our picks don't really ever amount to much. hopefully beckham and poreda change that...

did that guy from florida high school that threw like 5 no hitters get drafted
Posted by: Phil | June 09, 2009 at 09:20 PM
I don't think Pat Schuster (no-hitter kid) was drafted yet...
I didn't see his name any of the draft results
Posted by: pskip13 | June 09, 2009 at 09:50 PM
Schuster will enroll at the University of Florida

To say I am thrilled the Cards hit a slam dunk at #19 with Miller is quite an understatement! Got a Top 10 talent and ace potential type guy at #19. Couldn't be happier.

Wow, a lot of teams passed on Scheppers. Angels and D'backs each did it 4 times and I can't believe the Yankees pick him at 28. Think there is still injury concern?
Posted by: Yanksallday | June 09, 2009 at 11:16 PM
...can't believe the Yankees **didn't** pick him at 28...

I can't believe this. I just got home, hoping to get some good news on the Pirates and they draft a freaking catcher who might not have been first round material. I don't know a ton about this kid, but hopefully he gets in the system quick and starts raking, all I can hope for.
This team is a joke, flat out. They cut a TON of salary the last 2 years by trading 3 pretty good outfielders and can't even spend the money on a good first round pick. I don't want to hear about spending money on later round picks because you should take the best player when you're in that high of a position.
This is pretty much a blueprint of why they are horrible every year. They get high draft picks and use them on signable guys instead of taking chances on real impact players. When Porcello fell in round 1, I didn't know crap about the MLB draft, but I knew he'd be a stud and they should take him. I can assure you Aaron Crow will go on to be a very good starter for the Royals very soon. Hard to believe the Pirates could have Matt Wieters and Aaron Crow and instead have Tony Sanchez and Daniel Moskos. Sorry for the long winded post. Sure I speak for a lot of disgruntled fans.

milehigh, as an O's fan myself(my AL team), I think it was a decent pick. With the depth they have already at P with Tillman and Matsuz, they can afford to take a long-term prospect, in my opinion.
That said, I'm excited that the Nats front office finally "gets it."

It seemed to me that signability was much less of a concern this year than previous drafts. Also, teams must have been very concerned about Scheppers to let him fall that far.
Posted by: fenway_faithful | June 10, 2009 at 02:37 AM
bigpat,
If the Pirates and Braves are willing, maybe they can trade picks? If that was allowed.
Posted by: BravesRed | June 10, 2009 at 05:58 AM
a rules question, if anyone knows the answer- if Washington is unable to sign Strassburg, my understanding is that they will get the #2 pick in next years draft as compensation (and, let's face it, they are going to have the number one pick as well). I have read that they cannot pick Strassburg again without his permission- does that mean they as a team can't pick him again, or does it mean that the supplemental pick can't be used to pick him again? Because if that only applies to the supplemental pick, then they have a pretty big stick to wield over Boras- if he doesn't come off of his crazy demands, then this kid is going to miss the first two years of his career.

First of all, I LOVED the Rox and Jays' drafts so far. I want to see if Max Stassi, Brody Colvin, and Brian Goodwin get picked anytime soon.
@ jakec-
The Nats as a team can't pick him again w/o his permission.
@ bigpat-
They did pick two overslot guys later on though, in Victor Black and Brooks Pounders. Total draft spending, not just the first rounder. If there's no Sano in the Bucs' coffers when international FA signing period starts, heads should be rolling.
"It seemed to me that signability was much less of a concern this year than previous drafts."
I was thinking the opposite. No way Maztek slips to #11, Crow to #12, Purke to #14, Turner to #9, Miller to #19 without big signability issues.
Posted by: melonis rex | June 10, 2009 at 09:02 AM
couldnt agree more with you melonis. there is no way you can sell drafting sanchez and not getting wagner mateo or sano.

"It seemed to me that signability was much less of a concern this year than previous drafts."
Are you kidding?
Tony Sanchez went at 4, Matt Hobgood went at 5, Mike Minor went at 7, Mike Leake went at 8 and Drew Storen went at 10.
Jacob Turner, Tyler Matzek, Shelby Miller, Aaron Crow, Matt Purke, Tanner Scheppers, Alex White, Slade Heathcott and James Paxton all fell due to their bonus demands.
This year was like every other year, it's just that guys fell into the teens, rather than hitting Boston and New York in the late 20's.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 10, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Scribbletone,
Your right about most of those guys but both Boston and New York passed on Scheppers and the Yanks did draft Slade.
