Byrd Awaits Calls, Says He's Ready To Pitch

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, Paul Byrd wants to pitch and believes he can succeed, but says teams haven't been interested in him so far.  Since the draft has passed, the Red Sox will not receive a supplemental pick for Byrd, a Type B free agent.  Byrd sounds confident in his ability:

"I still feel like I can really, really help somebody out," he said.

He had a 4.60 ERA last year for the Indians and Red Sox. Tom Glavine, another free agent veteran, hasn't attracted much reported interest either, as teams have called on minor leaguers such as Antonio Bastardo, Vin Mazzaro and Aaron Poreda.

It's over, Paul.

I can just hear the thoughts inside an MLB GM's head:

"Let's see...I can pay Paul Byrd a few million dollars to give me an ERA in the neighborhood of 4.50-5.00, or I can bring up that kid from our AAA team to do the same for the major league minimum. Hmmm..."

Come on, Shapiro! Your rotation is Lee, Pavano, Sowers, Huff and Ohka. Sign Byrd to get a third legitimate starter in that rotation! Koo koOoOoOoOOO!

True...the AL Central can easily be had. The Tigers are doing well, but are certainly not unbeatable. Though Byrd may want to stay in the NL.

The Indians may be best off signing reclamations projects - i/e Mulder, Sheets, Pedro, etc - to see if they can find a diamond in the rough for their meager rotation. Worse comes to worse, they throw them in the also-meager bullpen.

No one would have owed the red sox a 2nd round pick. The pick would have been a supplemental 2nd round pick from MLB!

Byrd is a perfect fit in Cleveland. Sign him already. As Michael Moore said, the AL Central is winnable. That having been said, why not get a proven commodity like Byrd as opposed to some reclamation project like Mulder.

Yes, unlike Michael Moore's caloric intake, the Tribe pen is quite meager.

Both Westbrook and Laffey are close to coming off the D.L. Indians don't need Byrd. With the rotation restored, the bullpen pitching better and the return of Sizemore and Cabrera soon, as impossible as it may sound, the Indians may yet make a run at the A.L. central. 6 1/2 back is not insurmountable.

"As Bradford points out, any team signing Byrd before the draft would have owed the Red Sox a second round pick in compensation. Now that there's no such risk, some teams may be interested in Byrd, who sounds confident in his ability."

Bradford didn't even say that. All he said was that the Red Sox would have received likely the 50th overall pick. Lets not go putting words in people's mouths.
