Discussion: Jarrod Washburn

Jarrod Washburn is having a bit of a resurgence this season, sporting a 3.22 ERA, with a 2.37 ERA over his previous six games. Slight improvement in his strikeout rate plus increased success against left-handed hitters (.162 against) have the 34 year old seeming a decent commodity.

Peter Gammons said Washburn could be had. The Dodgers have reportedly been eyeing the veteran lefty; however a Juan Pierre for Washburn swap would not work because of Pierre's contract. Washburn has around $5.9MM left on his contract, as well as no-trade protection.

Greg Johns at the Seattle Post Intelligencer thinks the Mariners should not sell high, even as Washburn's value peaks with every good outing. Barring a good package of prospects, Johns feels that Seattle "will want to continue riding Washburn's strong season and see how far they can go." After all, they're only 2.5 games behind the first place Rangers, and are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Johns also notes Washburn's balky left knee causes him discomfort every pitch. Mike Sweeney is quoted in the piece saying, "He can barely walk the four days between starts. His knee is killing him, he's got a bad back. Yet every fifth day he goes out and pitches with all his heart."

If the standings don't change dramatically before the July 31st trade deadline, would the Mariners be better suited to sell high on Jarrod Washburn?

I don't think Z would take on the salary for the next two seasons. Endy Chavez was way less expensive and still probably not worth the money he made, though he fit the three center fielders structure the M's want.

I think the M's would be better suited throwing a prospect in with Washburn and making a stab at Andre Ethier.

The salary, that is, of Juan Pierre.

In short, I think they should sell high.

Washburn is having a total fluke of a season and if there is any truth to what Sweeney said about his knee that is a huge red flag. Anything they can get for him in the way of prospects is a good deal, losing a guy like Washburn is not going to damage their playoff hopes that much, it's gonna be a race between the Rangers and Angels in that division anyway.

'I think the M's would be better suited throwing a prospect in with Washburn and making a stab at Andre Ethier.'

That would have to be a hell of a prospect. Washburn us worth Pierre, if not for his contract, a fourth OF, but you want our starting RF with 12HRs and good defense, along with constantly hitting 300 and taking walks and getting deep in the count. It would take a lot more than Washburn and a prospect

Craziness, nothing more.

ldy4l, you mean the "consistent" .300 hitter who is hitting .261? Christ, you are a homer.

I do agree it is ludicrous that Washburn and a prospect would get Ethier, as he will improve each season..but he is not a consistent .300 hitter.

The Mariners obviously aren't interested in taking on Pierre's contract. If the Dodgers are willing to pay half of the 18.5M remaining on his contract after this season for 2010 and 2011 the M's might be willing to make the trade. If the Pierre trade just won't work then the Dodgers could offer up RHP James Mcdonald and AA SS Justin Sellers for Washburn. Any thoughts?

Ethier is anything but consistent, he is notoriously streaky. But the guy has a load of talent and has definitely played a key role in the Dodgers current success. I think the Mariners saw that tonight (3 HRs). Sorry, but the Dodgers aren't parting with ANY of their starting lineup (aside from Pierre). Why on earth would the team with the best record in baseball want to break up their starting lineup and disrupt team chemistry? Think about it.

McDonald could be had. Sellers, maybe. We have Hu, DeJesus and Gordan at SS. But I'd certainly have concerns about Washburn's health after reading this.

If you factor in his 'luck' stats is extremly low(compared to his carrer numbers) and the fact that he put a crap load of pressure on himself the first 2 or 3 weeks, then he would be a 300 hitter.

I really dont think that Washburn would get McDonald. McDonald has been thrown around in packages for aces, which Wash isnt. He would only get a few low prospects, esspically with knee problems...

just to put it in comparison, if his luck stat was at a normal level about two weeks ago, he would have 8 more hits, and his average would have been 298. Yea, he is pretty close to a 300 hitter. Remember, this is his first full yr of starting and he is on pace for more than 30Hrs, and his average will go up when Manny comes back and he just goes out and plays.

Ethier is a beast of a young player though despite the fact he isn't 'a consistent .300 hitter'. I wouldn't care he takes pitches, hits for power, gets on base, is young, cheap and plays decent defense.

The Mariners should sell high on Washburn and if healthy Bedard. They need get some young position players who can contribute offensively.
The Washburn for Ethier deal was ridiculous but what about a fully paid for Washburn and Bedard and Beltre for Loney & Ethier?
I don't see it happening at all and personally I think the Mariners would be robbing LA, but we have seen how LA can make stupid deals when the players they are getting come fully paid for.

The Dodgers do have *some* consideration about the future. While the Dodgers have made some bad signings under Colletti (Schmidt, Jones, Pierre), they haven't traded away any key young players or top prospects aside from Santana (blocked by Martin) and LaRoche (brought us Manny).

Not to mention they don't want to disrupt team chemistry (which, if you follow the Dodgers, you'd know is a huge reason for their success).

They're not going to trade two of their best young position players, under control for years, for 3 overpaid and injury-prone veterans entering free agency. No way. The Dodgers are a World Series calibur team right now, why risk it?

Only trade talks the Dodgers will be involved in will be based around Dodger prospects, not anybody on the major league club.

I think if the M's really wanted Ethier, they could offer Washburn, Jeff Clement, and one Michael Saunders and probably get him. But I don't think they want him that bad.

Um, what would we do with Clement? He is a catcher with average D but a power bat. Well, we kinda have this guy named Martin behind the plate. And at 1B, if thats what you are thinking, his bat is less impressive and we have Loney. Here's the report i read:

http://www.moundtalk.com/prospects/jeff-clement-scouting-report/

However, Saunders sounds like a stud.

I really dont think itd be enough because Wash is an average pitcher at best, A slugger with no where to play, which is a reason you want to trade him, and a stud prospect that has had trouble with patience at the higher levels.

another report on Saunders:

http://www.hot-prospects.net/tag/michael-saunders-scouting-report

The Dodgers dont need to be ridding themselves of there top talent for a half season rent-a-pitcher like Washburn...If they put McDonald or Elbert etc. on the trading block (two of the top 50 prospects in all of baseball) then aim for Bedard, Cliff Lee, or Halladay (still want Peavy but not gettin my hopes up)

...Ethier isnt going anywhere...ive already lost track of how many times HE gets dog-piled in a Dodger win

...Alright ENOUGH with the Pierre bashing...even when the Dodgers have the best record in baseball he is still hated on...even by Dodger fans!...huh???...r u serious???...Hes in the race for the NL batting and SB titles...he hardly ever strikes out...no errors in the OF this season (ya i know he cant throw though)...and the biggest thing of all...He came of the bench when Manny was suspended and PRODUCED...No Dodger had more pressure to not only do good, but do great...His contract is waaaay too high but if LA wins the NL Pennant or WS, would his contract be worth it?.....

The Dodgers would not be where they are if it wasnt for Pierre...and Ethier haha...so give the man credit...(just not any more money)
