Discussion: Mark Teahen

Earlier today, Peter Gammons tweeted this tidbit (his account is protected):

"Best name today Mark Teahen. SF, Bos, Cubs, WS, Mets...on."

Gammons squeezed as much as he could under the character count, but it's enough information to make it interesting. Teahen was the subject of discussion earlier this week, as the Royals were said to be open to dealing their "non-core players." Jon Paul Morosi at Fox Sports speculated Teahen could soon develop suitors.

Teahen, who will turn 28 in September, is making $3.575MM this year and won't become a free agent until after the 2011 season. He had a breakout year in 2006 when he posted an .874 OPS in 439 plate appearances, and while he hasn't approached those numbers since then, he has an .800 OPS in 280 plate appearances this year while manning outfield, second base, third base and first base for the Royals. That profile makes him a sort of poor man's Mark DeRosa, who has been on many teams' radars this summer.

If the Royals are indeed listening to offers for Teahen, on what team do you see him as the best fit? What could a player of his stature command? Share your thoughts.

could be a good back up plan for most teams listed here, for as much hype as Teahen got, he is kind of a bust. I see the best fit for the Red Sox only if the price tag is not crazy for him, Lowell is gonna need some time for his hip so I would think they would be very interested here.

Royals would prob start at two mid level prospects here.

Indians just traded Mark DeRosa to St. Louis for Chris Perez and a PTBNL

Dayton Moore loves Jeff Francoeur. I like where this is going...

Why does everyone have to come in here and say how the Red Sox could use x, y, and z.

I swear, they're getting worse than Yankee fans.

Mark my words he will be a Cub.

Mark Teahen for Darwin Barney and Matt Cerda.

Catching and Shortstop is a weakness in the Royals farm.

Barney is expendable due to the depth at Short. Hak-Ju Lee and Starlin Castro are better shortstop prospects.

Also,
Teahen for Wellington Castillo and maybe a A shortstop could happen.

Parrothead:
I'd love Teahen in Atlanta. Give the Royals Francoeur and 1 or 2 low level prospects (Maybe Matt Young and/or Cole Rohrbough?) for 2 and a half years of Teahen? I'd love that. He can play right, give Chipper or Kotchman a day off, or just say screw it and replace Johnson. Send Johnson to AAA where he seems to belong this year and go from there. Keep Diory Hernandez, drop Norton and bring up Canizares for the long haul, etc. I think that'd be a great move for the Braves. Though I'm sure some dickweed Braves fans would find some way to rip into Frank Wren for doing it... He hasn't done much wrong (except for trade 5 guys for Vazquez and Logan... Vazquez has been MONEY, but still... too much to give up) and people hate him. He's been great, IMO.

Anyway, I digress. Teahen would fit in great in Atlanta.

I think that the Giants should and would be very interested. He seems like the type of player they will likely add. He is still under team control, won't cost a lot in both salary and prospects. The possibility of him being able to play 2B is a huge plus. Thats one position that has been a tough one to fill for the Giants.

I doubt Teahen will demand too much more than Mark DeRosa on the open market. I think that Jonathan Sanchez and a solid bullpen arm along with a prospect would be a good return for Teahen. I know Sanchez's value has slipped, but if a young, solid bullpen arm like Merkin Valdez is included, then the deal would be very good for the Royals too.

Like I said the weakness of the royals farm is shortstop and Catcher.
In there system the 4,5,6,7,8,10,11,14,15,16,18,and 19 are pitchers... They would love to fill some needs with this golden opportunity.

"I'd love Teahen in Atlanta. Give the Royals Francoeur and 1 or 2 low level prospects (Maybe Matt Young and/or Cole Rohrbough?)"

HUGE difference between Young and Rohrborough. Rohrborough is a really good prospect. You do NOT trade him for Teahen.

How about Teahen back to the A's to play 3B?

well now seeing as st louis got Dero the cubs have to answer and get Teahen.

Rohrbough seems to be a pretty legit prospect, but he's been garbage this year. That's not saying he won't turn it around... The Braves have tons of emerging pitching depth though. I wouldn't see losing Rohrbough for a guy like Teahen being too bad. I was mad when we gave up Jeff Locke for McLouth. That's not saying I don't like having McLouth leading off. I'd like him to hit a bit more than .250 though... If we can get some better bats behind him I'm sure he will, but that's a huge IF until guys like Heyward and Freeman are ready to come up.

It's funny that every time a team dips below the .400 mark writers just assume that these small market teams will just become the AAAA farm for teams in contention. Teahan is not making a lot of money. I know they are a small market but $3.75 isn't prohibitive, especially for a young-ish player on a team low on talent. Right now, with Crisp, Gordon and Aviles out and GUillen, Jacobs and DeJesus underperforming, Teahan is one of their better hitters AND has versatility. Why not ust hold on to him? I mean at some point you have to go with mlb players over constantly accumulating unknown quantities (prospects). The Royals play in a bad division. I think they are 2 or 3 players away from being legitimate contenders in a weak AL Central.

Should've read .500 mark.

Yanks fan,

This is simply because they could get GOOD prospects for him. The fact that he makes 3.75 million means that they could command better prospects for him.

I understand what they could get, but let's not over state his value. He's a good player but a lifetime .270/.330 hitter isn't going to net all-star, high cieling talent. At some point the ROyals have to say "We are going to use some of the cheap, affordable talent we have and make attempts to compete". It's not like they are overflowing with tons of talent. Who is Teahan blocking? No one. He's cheap, young and versatile. If you did trade him, it would be for a mediocre prospect or a couple of low A ball talent which might take 3 or 4 years to develop. Not to overstate his value but trading Teahan, or rather the philosophy of trading away cheap talent under control, is a mistake especially when you have young pitching like Greinke, Bannister, Hochevar and Davies around that might help you become competitive. I could see trading Guillen for whatever you can get but at what point do stop collecting prospects and start going with mlb talent that's affordable?

Yankees and Red Sox. I would say that Yankees are the most interested...

"I would say that Yankees are the most interested..."

Yankee interest was when Arod went under the knife for hip labrum surgery and probably ended when he came back, so that interest has probably waned.

Boston has Lowrie (plays 2B,SS,3B)already appearing in rehab games at AAA and will be back very soon as well as Nick green who also can play every left side IF position to spell Lowell and allow him to take 1-2 games per week off from 3rd base to rest his repaired hip.

I think Teahen could hit well at Fenway, but would hate to see one of the other subs like Green, Lowrie, Kotsay, Baldelli have to lose a roster spot, plus have to give up a really good more than likely pitching prospect for him.

A team needing a 3B/OF is the one that will probably be in the hunt that has a friendly hitting stadium for his power potential and Wrigley field now fits that bill, only problem is the Royals trying to find some pitching from them that they would want.

I'd love to see Teahen with the Cubs, but I'd also hate it. It's taken forever to get Fontenot in the lineup, and I'd hate to see him get yanked after 50-75 games for Teahen. It may reach 80-90 if they keep Teahen at 3B until Rammy is back and then move Teahen to 2B and bench Fontenot. He's a good, versatile player, but I'd ask KC to take back either Freel or Miles to prevent overcrowding the utility spot (if that's possible). Why have Fontenot (2B/3B), Miles (2B/3B/SS), Teahen (2B/3B/OF), and Freel (2B/3B/OF) all battling for one starting position the second half? This could become a scenario of too much of a good thing. Throw Miles/Freel with a couple of average to below-average prospects for him. Once Rammy's back, having 3-4 Utility guys cycling in and out of the lineup may piss one of them off a some point.

the Giants should get Teahen and another outfield bat (Holliday,Dye,Dunn,Willingham?) like how the dodgers did it last year with Blake/Manny
these two bats would dramatically change our lineup and take pressure of Sandoval who is looking like an all-star

I think Kyle Nicholson or Ari Ronick(one of the two), Josh Mazzola, and Ryan Rohlinger could be enough to get Teahen

Any chance the Cardinals go after him too? LaRussa loves versatile players.

I know as well as everyone else it won't happen but anywho.

Teahen would be great in Pittsburgh!

Teahen is an enigma. he's got all the potential in the world.. Power, even shows a decent discipline sometimes. Think he just needs a hitting coach or instructor to harness all that massive talent he has and has yet to find it, but when he does. Watch out.

The unfriendly mausoleum park he plays in also does not help any.. Long blast just die in that park all to often and may discourage him and SF may not exactly be a good destination for him either, a hitter friendly park like Wrigley, Arlington, Fenway etc.. would fit the bill for him, but he needs one that also has a hitting coach that can through to him that will shorten his swing and work with his massive talent IMO.

Have a feeling KC is looking for young pitching also and that may make it hard on the Cubbies to work a deal, but as far as TeRosa vs Teahen, they may get a better player in the longrun *if* can fix his kinks and send them a good reliever + prospect pitcher.

Boston is probably out, no real need unless Lowell's hip is worse than expected.

Yankees?, Pittsburg? Yankees only if the are scared of ARods hip after seeing that Lowell is having a little set back and don't know about the Bucs, not sure what he would do in that park to help.

Just throwing a Mets offer out there, maybe Eddie Kunz or Brant Rustich? If that isn't enough, maybe throw in Robert Carson.

Just throwing a Mets offer out there, maybe Eddie Kunz or Brant Rustich? If that isn't enough, maybe throw in Robert Carson.

Well Teahen would be good in Pittsburgh mainly because Pittsburgh has a terrible outfield.

Though he's still young so I suppose he could be a good long term guy for a club like that.

The Braves really missed the boat on DeRosa, he was just what they needed so if Teahen can play everywhere like DeRosa, than he should definitely be on our radar. I've never seen this guy play but his numbers look solid, I did notice he's another lefty bat though. Don't know enough about him to say I want him but we need another everyday player who can move around alot, be it at second, first, third, and the outfield. I read the Cards were willing to include Ludwick in a Holliday deal, I wonder if now they have DeRosa if he becomes available for some pitching help? Maybe Rafael Soriano or Mike Gonzalez as a centerpiece? That would help our everyday lineup but kill our pen. Oh well, just thinking out loud.

Teahen is a fan favorite here in KC. The problem is the club has expected too much out of him. They've tried to squeeze him in every position they can just so he can get at-bats. Teahen is not a starter on a championship team...but he's a super-sub for sure.

Despite the Royals' injury situation I'd take a bucket of balls and a fungo bat for him. He is, afterall, Mark Teahen.

"I think that Jonathan Sanchez and a solid bullpen arm along with a prospect would be a good return for Teahen." - slr5607

That is way too much to give up for Teahen.

I actually really like the idea of the Cubs adding Teahen.

He's a versatile, solid lefty hitter that would help to push Aaron Miles into oblivion.

His defense at third base is below average, but he's a plus defensive first baseman and corner outfielder, the cost should be reasonable, and he's posted an OBP between .343 and .357 in three of the past four years.

Since I am a Royals fan this may seem a bit myopic, but here's my take.

His return value in a trade is higher than Derosa's. He is less expensive and he'd be under team control for 2.5 years, unlike the half year you get from Derosa. Relief pitchers and low level prospects aren't going to get it done, because the Royals still have to field a major league team and their bully is set and this is the only place that they have some help on the cusp in the minors. If they move him they need to fill some needs.

Teams looking to bolster their rosters for playoff runs should be able to pony up a bit to get him. In the poor economy he's a great low price addition that will pay dividends for a couple more years.

I don't see the Royals being willing to move him. He's our best offensive player right now.

Not sure why the Cubs would be ruled out if KC is looking for young pitching. Two of the three arms they got for DeRosa are doing pretty well, not to mention the good young arms they have shuttling back and forth between AAA and Wrigley. Wells, Ascanio, Patton, Shark, Guzman... In fact Chicago would not trade some of those guys for just Teahen.

ST. Louis gave up Chris Perez for DeRosa. If we assume that Teahen is a poor man's DeRosa then I think Ascanio would get the deal done, though I'm hesitant to call Ascanio a poor man's Perez. Teahen has a few things over DeRosa, age and salary being chief among them, but if we're talking pure baseball skill then KC needs to ask for less than what Cleveland just got.

I don't see KC moving him without getting multiple prospects in return, but he would fit a bunch of teams. The Mets could certainly use the versatility with all their injuries, not sure what they'd have to give up.

I'd love to see him in Cincy, the money and versatility make sense. I don't know what they'd be willing to give up to get him, and don't know that he would push the team over the hump offensively.

I just know I don't wanna see him with the Cards or the Cubs.

Okay, I forgot about the PTBNL in the Cle/StL trade, that obviously changes thing a bit for a Cubs/KC trade, but not much. I should also mention that Teahen is signed for longer than DeRosa is, which would up his value some. So, Ascanio obviously isn't going to get the deal done by himself. As far as that goes I'm not sure the Cubs should be trading away descent bullpen arms right now though a bat is more important at this point. I suppose Ascanio and a good prospect would be a fair asking price for this trade to happen.

help from royals fan what do the reds have that would get teahen. i would love the reds to get teahen. in our ballpark teahen could hit 20 to 30 homers
thanks

I think Teahan has the ability to be a better hitter than DeRosa. I think with the right hitting coach and a better approach he has the potential to be a solid .280/.350 20 hr a year type of guy. The fact that he can play more than position makes him an assett but odly it almost hurt him as it fosters the perception that he's a super utility guy who can't hold down a full-time job.

There are much better options on the market for a corner OF'er and the asking price would be too high as I would've want to give the Royals any of our young SP in A/AA but he could be a good everyday LF and emergency back up if Arod relapses and can't play the field in 2010. I'm 99% confident it will never happen but I wouldn't be afraid to give him a full time LF job, especially if he learned to pull the ball more.

wow...please excuse my butchering of the english language. My bad..

Mark Teahen makes the most sense in Seattle. The Mariners need a 3B for the next 6-8 weeks while Beltre heals. After Beltre is back, Teahen could end up in LF or as a utility player for the rest of the season depending on how Balentien does.

Even if Teahen doesn't look to be the most competent 3B at times defensively, we can play him at 2B. Jose Lopez, who has played well at the hot corner when replacing Beltre last season, would be a solid replacement for Adrian, while Teahen would give the Mariners another LH batter for the lineup.

Next year the Mariners are unsure of the 3B position. Beltre is obviously a free agent, Lopez can play 1B, 2B, or 3B, depending on who Seattle retains and signs in the offseason, but having Teahen would aid the Mariners negotiations with Beltre and would guarantee one more powerful LH bat in the lineup regardless of where they play him in 2010.

Brayan Pena hasn't been too important to KC as they passed him through waivers at one point this season in order to send him to AAA. An inclusion of Pena in the deal would allow the Mariners to push Johnson down to AAA, so that he can raise his hitting confidence.

Maybe something like Garrett Olson, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Jeff Clement for Mark Teahen and Brayan Pena. I know that Betancourts on the DL, but they either wait 2 weeks to do the deal or they ship out Cedeno instead. Jeff's parents have come watch him play games in KC because of the proximity to Iowa and if Clement ever does reach his ceiling, than he would be easy for the Royals to re-sign, which Mark Teahen may not be. All it takes is for Teahen to get a few extra hits a month and a couple warning track fly balls to become a HR and the Royals won't be able to retain him after next season, he's that close to good. YankeeFan78 said why trade him, because he could become really expensive, really quick. Next year he should make about $5.5MM in arbitration, so the cost is going up for Teahen.

I watch every KC game and study baseball and everybody thinks of Teahen as a utility player. His defense at 3rd is way underrated, he is one of the 10 best defensive 3rd basemen in baseball. He will hit .290, 20-25 HR and 75-90 RBI's in a career year. Because KC has been so cheap over the years, thet put him in the OF because they didn't have anyone else to play out there and had Gordon at 3rd. He has struggled at the plate when forced to move around and he would like to stay at 3rd. His best value is probably in the NL. In my opinion, what they ought to do is keep Teahen at 3rd, move Gordon to 1st. If they insist on moving him, they should throw in DeJesus and a couple really good prospect and go get a masher like Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres. SD doesn't have any OF or IF prospects coming through the system, their payroll is at 42 million, and there is value in having cheap players that are proven major-leaguers. They could put either Kousmenoff or Teahen at 3rd, put the other at 1st, and have a really good leadoff hitter with good LF defense. I wouldn't be adverse to throwing in Hocheaver to take a spot in the rotation when they finally trade Peavy. Bottom line is Teahen is a great club house guy with high character and I would love to see him stay in KC, but business is business and he will probably be moved around on a contending team. I just hope they give him the contract he desearves.

By "WS" Gammons means White Sox??? That's probably not super serious due to the whole same division aspect, but I (as a Sox fan) would LOVE it. Tehan is not to be underrated and I hate seeing him come up against the Sox in a tight situation. Really, I'd love to see him end up anywhere outside of the AL Central, but in pinstripes on the South Side would easily be worth giving up Josh Fields and a minor league arm like Whistler or even a 1-for-1 trade of Beckham (most would think the Sox were giving up too much, but I can't imagine that Beckham in the future would be better than Tehan now).

How many others think that Teahen could take over trade discussions almost the way that DeRosa has the last couple of weeks, just because the guy can play 5 positions, has a pretty decent bat and is fairly affordable and under team control?

I'm a Royals fan and let me tell you Teahan is a very below average second baseman. He can play 1B, 3B, LF, RF. The Royals should get something for him since there will be many teams interested and will have to battle with each other.

How about Teahan for Jake Fox?
