Danny Knobler of CBS Sports identifies the five neediest teams in baseball. No team will be able to acquire big names easily, however, as officials around the league agree that impact arms and bats aren't available with so many teams in the race. Here's a closer look at Knobler's rumors:

"The Giants could use a hitter and Knobler hears that Brian Sabean's facing pressure from his superiors to make a move."
Thats not good, that only puts pressure on him too start moving the top prospects.

I STILL can't figure out why Sabean didn't go after Dunn when he had the chance.

I cant believe nobody wanted him, just not the Giants.

The Giants just boggle my mind more than anyone else. They signed Randy Johnson, and toyed with the Manny idea. They OBVIOUSLY didn't have the hitting to keep up with LA, yet Sabean doesn't sign Dunn? Plus, we know that park can be conducive to lefty power hitters.

"As one official points out, "thirty teams in baseball could use Mark DeRosa" and the Cardinals could use him most of all."
Then go out and get him already before another team swipes him from the Indians(like the Mets). I just have a feeling that Mo is going to sit around and wait too long to do something and by that time some other team will have Derosa and no impact bats will be available. Though getting Derosa would be big, he isn't the impact bat and protection for Albert that we are looking for. We need to go after Holliday, Dunn, Carlos Lee, etc. Someone like them batting behind Albert would be a dangerous 3-4 combo, something Cardinals fans have been wanting for a while.

hearing that sabean is being pressured to trade just scares me
and AT&T park is actually better for righty power hitters more than lefties with the exception of barry bonds
its because the wind that blows in from the mcovey cove in right field knocks down all those fly balls

The Giants need someone in the middle of their line-up who can get on base. The Uggla's, Dye's and Derosa's are fun to think about, but without someone in the middle who can really work a count, opposing pitchers just get to throw crap to our lineup full of free swinging goons. You put Nick Johnson in our lineup and I guarantee you see a huge difference. Get that guy and then humor me with thoughts of Uggla manning 2nd base for the Giants.
The Giants need to contact Barry Bonds and tell him to start getting in shape. This season is molding itself into a classic Dodgers-Giants division race. Imagine the Dodgers-Giants both getting into the playoffs and even the NLCS. Then imagine the return of Barry Bonds. Barry vs. Manny. You want to fill some seats and really reinvigorate the rivalry? Go get Nick Johnson and then bring back Barry for the race. I'm not even close to joking.

as much as I love barry bonds there is no way he can last the rest of the season with his bad knees out in left field
I've said many times that jermaine dye would be perfect but I'm not sure if the white sox will sell

Why don't ruben Amaro and Sabean get on the phone. Would he listen if Amaro offered RH power hitter John Mayberry Jr. and a top prospect or 2 for Matt Cain? Mayberry is still very young, displaying massive power and a good batting eye, and is stuck in the phillies outfield once Ibanez comes back. Plus, the phillies really need pitching.
Posted by: Dcwildcat53 | June 24, 2009 at 04:58 PM
If mayberry is still too unproven, does Jayson Werth's name get dangled? He was just voted one of the most underrated players in baseball. Has the skills to be a 30-30 guy.
Posted by: Dcwildcat53 | June 24, 2009 at 04:59 PM
no way we trade matt cain, the ace of our staff, for an unproven hitter
I'm not saying mayberry won't be a great hitter but Cain is the top pitcher in the NL if not tied for the best
the Giants are trying to win now
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | June 24, 2009 at 05:03 PM
Matt Cain would require a true power bat which no team would give up

No, I honestly can't imagine the Giants making the NLCS this year.

Yeah I agree with you. Also, I think if the Phillies are moving anyone, it's Werth, not Mayberry Jr.

The Giants might match up nicely with Baltimore. Aubrey Huff isn't producing at his 2008 level, but he's still putting up solid numbers and has always been a second half player. He could take over first base for Ishikawa, which would be a pretty major offensive upgrade, and he projects as a Type A FA- possibly netting SF a pair of premium draft picks next summer.
In exchange, SF sends a package of prospects- think: Brandon Crawford, Scott Barnes, and Conner Gilaspie or Ehire Adrianza, Henry Sosa, and Francisco Peguero. Obviously no one from the Bumgarner/Alderson/Posey/Villalona group.
Whaddya think?!
Posted by: milehigh78 | June 24, 2009 at 05:44 PM
Maybe the O's toss in a decent MR like Baez or long man like Bass, just to even it out a bit. Oh, and they'd probably have to pay a healthy chunk of his remaining '09 salary to get the kind of return they'd want.

Mayberry is a textbook AAAA guy.

Dont give the guys hopes up!

Mayberry is exactly what you said, a 4A dude.
Cain would require the Philles 1,2,3 top prospects and possibly another piece.

IMO Dan Haren is the best pitcher in NL.

I have to agree with this.

I consider haren and cain tied for best pitcher in NL both have been incrdibly good

In this market, Huff WILL accept arbitration though. He's not going to get nearly as much on the open market as he would in arb. So I'd probably say its like a 30% chance of actually getting draft picks for him.
Way, way too much to give up for Huff, even if the O's ate all the salary. But then, I'm not too familiar with those prospects, but it looks like a pretty massive haul for a rental like Huff.

I think your forgeting about Carpenter
Posted by: El Hombre for MVP | June 24, 2009 at 07:28 PM
Rick Ankiel for Jeff Francouer. I know Braves fans have wanted to hear something like this for awhile. Get this bum out of St. Louis. I am so tired of Ankiel and I hope he goes back to being a pitcher because he would probably have better success than what he is doing now, which is nothing. Funny thing is, I am actually serious about this trade.
Posted by: Motley14 | June 24, 2009 at 07:58 PM
661dodgerblue, you are definetly forgeting Carpenter. I mean, the guy has an ERA under 2.00.

Cole Hamels > Jimenez

No, but Hamels over Vazquez, I meant too put young starters at the top of that list.

"Matt Cain would require a true power bat which no team would give up"
I can't understand why the Giants would give up Cain period. Build the team on Lincecum and Cain and maybe Sandevol as absolutely untouchable and make moves from there.
SF has probably best 1-2 punch in BB for starters.
Posted by: johns | June 24, 2009 at 10:11 PM
thats my point that we should never give up Cain because for years we will have the best 1-2 punch in baseball in terms of pitching
only player I'd trade him for is pujols
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | June 25, 2009 at 12:10 AM
Giants fans, why would you want Adam Dunn's big ass on your team?? Ok, he's a lock for 40/100 and an obp around 400, but he is a defensive LIABILITY and has an arm like a wet noodle, not to mention all those strike outs. He was born to DH, not play in the NL.
It was no secret our offense was going to struggle. We had our chance in the off season with guys like ABREU and HUDSON who seemed to hang around the free agent market until the 11th hour. Both were signed at bargain prices, Hudson 3mil, Abreu 5mil. How do we not jump on that?!? How badly do we need a 2B? Now we are going to trade away some of our homegrown talent for a bat we should've already signed.
My bet is we are dealing Johnathan Sanchez. Sure he's been struggling with control but with over a K per inning, there's no doubt he has loads of talent.
Everyone talks like Sabean is some baseball savant. I haven't agreed with a single one of his moves for the past 7 years. Do I even need to remind you of the Nathan/Liriano for Piershitski deal?? I still wake up in cold sweats over that one.
Sabean's contract is up after this year; I say good riddance! Time to take boat in a new direction. GL with your free agency Brian...

"only player I'd trade him for is pujols"
I could think of a few players I would trade Billingsley for, and trust me when have the same fondness for our respective pitchers.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 25, 2009 at 01:58 AM
I'm a big Cards fan but I don't see them making any moves, I have zero confidence in Mozelik, he hasn't made any moves. I wish we would make a trade to see someone that can bat behind Pujols. We've tried Duncan, Ludwick and Ankiel and none of those guys are helping in the cleanup spot, about the best one we've had there was Colby Rasmus and he needs to be batting second because he makes contact. I wish we could get more pitching and a big bat but I don't see it happening.
Posted by: kevinj | June 25, 2009 at 03:10 PM
If the Giants traded Cain for anything short of a consistent All-Star caliber hitter, that is 25 +/- 2 years, would be considered General Manager suicide for Sabean. I can't stand his act, and I want him gone, but I dont think he is THAT stupid.
Straight up trades that I would take for Cain(in no particular order):
1. Braun
2. Pujols
3. Miguel Cabrera
