« Discussion: What Should The Mets Do? | Main | Pirates Sign Supplemental First Round Pick »
Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Mets designated Wilson Valdez for assignment to make room for pitchers Elmer Dessens and Pat Misch. The roster shuffle comes partially because Carlos Beltran is headed for the DL.
In 26 plate appearances for the Mets, Valdez hit .208/.269/.333. The 31-year-old played both middle infield positions.

Wilson!
There has been a lot of roster juggling today, between Davis getting called to Bingo, Valdez and Takahashi DFA'd, Valentin and Pena released. Something is a brewin.....
No trading Jenrry Mejia!

No if only we can get rid of Murphy.
Posted by: metfan57 | June 22, 2009 at 05:15 PM
The Mets are old, half the team has a AARP Card, get younger and dump the old guys
Posted by: Raymond | June 22, 2009 at 05:17 PM
ok raymond, name 5 players you consider old on the mets that they should get rid of

Which Murphy do you speak of?
I hope its not Daniel.

wow... lets just release all our young promising players metfan57. Goodbye Nick Evans, Fernando Martinez, Daniel Murphy, Rueben Tejeda, Brad Holt, etc etc etc.
Now what would releasing Murphy solve for the Mets right now?
Posted by: RIPShea | June 22, 2009 at 05:35 PM
What other Murphy would it be besides Daniel. There is not a lot of room on the team for light hitting first basemen with little power and questionable defensive abilites. Nick Evans could fill his spot much better.

Ramon Martinez and Redding is all I can see.
Mets fans, is Castillos production better than expected or is the OBP just a mirage?

Nice! Ok
How about Mota and some other crap for him?
How do you wanna release him?!
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 05:41 PM
Dude go look at Evans stellar season and tell me how he is worth a roster spot.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 05:43 PM
well dodgerblue Castillo's OPS is about average with the league right now or close to it. He hasn't really been terrible. He's heathly though. Besides the one dreaded pop-up he has played very good defense. Would I rather have the O-Dawg? without question but I never gave up on Castillo and he is doing his job.

Sheffeild ,Delgado, Redding, Martinez,, do I need say any more?
Posted by: Raymond | June 22, 2009 at 05:45 PM
Who said release him? I meant send him down to AAA for while to build up his confindence and then bring him back up with him feeling more comfortable at the plate. I am sorry for not being clear.

Sheffield was a god send for the Mets.
Delgado was hitting, why would you let him go? Is he contract not over after the season?
RIPshea,
thanks, I saw last year he got the Juan Pierre hate treatment. So I was curious.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 05:53 PM
Sheffield - 131 OPS+
Delgado - 140 OPS+ in 112 PAs before he got hurt
Redding - 31 years old
Martinez - Our 3rd/4th string SS
Nicely done. Do us a favor and post somewhere else. Or get educated.

Is Murphy a promising young hitter?
Yes.
Does he have a spot on the Mets lineup?
NO! the man is a natural 3rd baseman , and should be played as such. He sucks at 1B and LF because he hasn't normally played those positions. The Mets are currently in the "uh what should we do with Murphy?" stage, because he doesn't fit anywhere.
He's currently the best trade chip they have, and they should use him as such.

For what? A first baseman? A outfielder?
Thats makes no sense.
If can get a legit number 2 starter than do it. Its not happening however, unless Omar opens up the farm.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 06:06 PM
your not going to win the division or the series with this team, how many year have this team tried? The truth hurts, the GM SUCKS AND THE MANAGER SUCKS ,SORRY,STRIKE OUT AGAIN

Trade Murphy for a decent OF or 1B to a team that needs a 3B. I fail to see how it doesn't make any sense.

"Trade Murphy for a decent OF or 1B to a team that needs a 3B."
Or play him?
He will be playing first for the Mets fulltime next year.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 06:31 PM
That's my point, he doesn't have enough power nor defense to be a capable first baseman in the league.
Aren't there rumors of the Astros going on fire sale if they are out of it come deadline? I know ESPN rated them the worst farm system in the majors...would it be worth it to give up some farm for Berkman or Lee? I may be making things up (as I usually do) that the Astros are looking to get rid of Lee's contract.

Plus, Murphy isn't Latino enough to stay on the Mets.
Omar can't have enough Carlos' and Fernando's!
Posted by: Thee4stringking | June 22, 2009 at 06:49 PM
The amount of idiocy in the few Mets topics today is literally unbelievable.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 22, 2009 at 07:01 PM
Wow that J.J. Putz deal is killing them right now. They could have Mike Carp filling in right now.

You're right, lets all lay down strawman arguments instead, thats a much better idea.
Shut up.
