who will phillies most likely get
Posted by: phillies | June 02, 2009 at 02:45 PM
How early do you have to ask a question to get it answered? I asked at 12:24, 12:36 and 12:45 only to no avail.

Earlier isn't necessarily better. What's your question though? Write it down here.

I got a question: Who is your favorite sports writer? What would Braves have to give up to get Luke Scott? What would Braves have to give up to get Shin-Soo Choo?
Posted by: BravesRed | June 02, 2009 at 03:14 PM
I had two. The first was, As a Padres fan who should i expect to see first..Kyle Blanks or Mat Latos? The second was are the Padres really considering Mike Minor at #3? I think thats a HUGE reach and would think given their past drafts they would have learned by now but everything i have read seems to disagree with that.

BraveRed, don't see Choo being available, and I bet a package around Medlen or if we're lucky Morton could do for Scott. Willingham seems to make the most sense to me though. He's a controllable power righty, Scott is great and I wouldn't shed a tear if we got him, but I think the Hammer would be cheaper (prospect wise) and a better fit. I wish they'd get him and DeRosa, but I can't imagine Wren making multiple moves, and that would require moving Frenchy too. Anybody have a report on Willingham and Scott's viability in right.
I also like the idea of going after Reggie Willits, he had a great season two years ago and just got dumped on after they signed Hunter. He could be had relatively cheap and could fill the leadoff role.

Hey Ben....you referenced the Cards dealing pitching and said you would be posting it later today....what is the post? Can you put it up? Thanks!

3:22 [Comment From Braves Fan]
The Brewers could use a starter and Braves need a bat how bout Corey Hart Straight up for Vazquez?
3:23 Corey Hart's not on the block and the Vazquez post was a scout's suggestion, nothing more. It would address the Braves' needs though
Why does everyone think that Vazquez and Hart are of equal value? Vazquez is pitching like a borderline ace right now, whereas Hart has always been a low OBP, high strikeout guy. Yeah I'd like him over what we currently have but no way is that close to fair

Bravesfan,
I agree completely, but I think alot of people are using the dollars to balance the reasoning. I personally would just assume play Diaz everyday as trade for Hart. Atleast that way we don't have to give up anything else. I wish Cox would sit Frenchy, it thoroughly pisses me off when he sits KJ when he atleast puts up decent OB% and then runs Frenchy out there night in and night out. Don't get me wrong I love Cox, and know his loyalty is what makes him one of the top skippers in the history of the games, but it is also quite often his downfall.

"Don't get me wrong I love Cox"
HaHa...

BravesRed:
My favorite current sportswriter is Joe Posnanski. I agree that Choo is not available and given that Scott will be under team control for a while yet, the O's won't just hand him over.
Myk13:
Latos has been great, but Blanks has been hitting well at Triple A. Not as well as he did in the lower levels, but I think he'll debut first.

Freddy Sanchez would fit in better for the Brewers if he wasn't a risk to have his 2010 option vest (at 635 PAs). The Brewers could use a fill-in for the rest of the year and certainly wouldn't mind the draft pick he might bring in compensation were his option not to vest, but they're not interested in getting a guy for more than this year.

ben, you said that manny was "hands down" the worst FA signing of the year... i don't quite follow. How big of a distraction could he have been if the dodgers have the best record in baseball? He played in 27 games total, and his .348 BA and 1.113 OPS surely played a role in going 21-8 before the suspension. he may be a distraction to the media and to MLB, but not the the dodgers... while they are not as productive without him, they are still 14-10 since he left. Kemp and Ethier have both publicly said they wouldnt be having the year they had without him being a second hitting instructor during last season and the first half of this one. I just think you went for the easy target, and adding "hands down" seems overzealous. I understand that salary has something to do with it, but you don't think A.J. Burnett, who makes $16 mil to go 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA and is 2nd in baseball in walks given up should be considered? it sounds like you just went with the easy answer, that's all.

agreed on Manny. If anything, he could be HELPING the kids. let them get confidence to play by them selves. look at casey blake, he is hitting 400 w/o manny and has 9 dingers, to lead the team. Manny still talks to the guys, just not the media. they love manny, LA loves Manny, and the media(minus Plascke, who shouldnt be covering baseball), and he is anything but 'hands down' the worst distraction/signing

So Manny has become a $20 million hitting coach and you're saying that that's not a bust?
Posted by: lub91 | June 02, 2009 at 07:11 PM
no because it will be only 13M(the money lost by his suspension is taken off the deffered payments, just not this yr), he hit 358 with an OPS over 1 the first 29 games and still comes back on July 3rd, for the playoff stretch. and unlike an injury, we know he'll be back in game shape(he gets 10 games to get ready

based on the Cardinal ownership and their crony Mozeilok's history there is a 0% they go out and get Derosa or ANYONE of any consequence. Just look at the last couple years alone they keep saying "we just lost out on the guy we had the number 2 bid put in and he past on us". BULL@#$%!!! That's how it was with Schmidt, Fuentes, K-ROD, and several others, if you want a guy go out and get him. Thats all just the company line so that they can nickle and dime on the payroll and keep drawing 3.5 million fans and laugh all the way to the bank.

lub91, i think you took my comment out of context. the reality is manny ramirez was with the team for 27 games to start and contributed at an MVP level, and will be with the team for another 80 contributing at an all-star level... so no, i don't think anyone would assume manny ramirez has become a $20 mil hitting coach. I was just pointing out that during his suspension we are still benefiting from his signing, as 3 or 3 hitters are having career numbers or making huge strides and all have said it's a direct result of manny's advice, and that without the advice they wouldnt be producing now that he's away. all i was saying is that it's hard to call a player with a 1.113 OPS on the best team in baseball the "hands-down" worst FA signing, even if he misses 1/3 of the season. I pointed out Burnett, who makes $16 mil, has a mediocre record, and pretty bad overall stats while being in no way acclaimed as someone who helps his team off the field. i think a strong argument is he is a worse FA signing, and he's someone that leaps right off the top of my head, digging deeper i'm sure there are more that could be lumped in there. I also thought the only reasoning Manny was "hands down" the worst signing is him being a "distraction," which he clearly is not with regards to his team, the only factor that really matters.
Posted by: deanconklin | June 03, 2009 at 01:01 AM
hahaha, *2 or 3 hitters was what i meant
Posted by: deanconklin | June 03, 2009 at 01:01 AM
actually, you're right. Paying jason giambi $5 mil+ to hit .218 with a .721 OPS is clearly a better signing. Or O cabrera's $4mil .575 OPS, that would be dumb to consider. How about burrell over in tampa, whos missing time on the DL while gettin paid $7 mil to sit on his 1 HR and .315 slugging, .664 OPS. He surely is a significantly better signing than manny, as he's played a whopping 3 more games and is still expected to miss another few weeks. I'm just glad this doesnt include potential FA who had options picked up, because i wouldve looked like a fool to bring up vlad guerrero, as his $15mil option to hit 5 RBI on a .605 OPS. And lets not forget about good ol Kerry Wood, and his 6.00 ERA while getting paid $10 mil on a last place team that should be much better. I'm glad i actually did the research, Manny Ramirez and his 1.113 OPS, his contribution to a team that i think is pretty alright on and off the field, and his $10-15 mil merch/ticket revenue as of the first month of the season is surely the "hands down" worst signing...boy, what a distraction!
