Odd & Ends: Penny, Reds, Nationals, Buchholz

The College World Series kicked off today, with Arkansas knocking off Cal State Fullerton in Game One of the double elimination event. Virginia is taking on LSU tonight. You can see the game on ESPN.

Anyway, here's some Saturday night linkage:

  • The Angels have signed nine draft picks, including 48th overall pick Tyler Kehrer according to Mike DiGiovanna.
  • Jon Heyman tweets that teams have called the Red Sox about Brad Penny, and even though the Dodgers are looking "they wouldn't take him back."
  • John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer spoke to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who said he's looked outside the organization for help, but "there’s not a lot going on right now." Jocketty also said that the team is not looking for a third baseman, despite reports.
  • Chico Harlan of The Washington Post says that the Nationals signed righthander Trevor Holder, their third round pick, to a below slot bonus.
  • Rockies reliever Taylor Buchholz suffered a setback in his return from a right elbow injury according to Patrick Saunders, and could be out for the year. Could Buchholz's injury impact the Rockies' decision to move closer Huston Street if they maintain their current hot streak?
  • The New York Times' Joe Brescia wrote about the Yankees and how they've used Mexico as a source of talent recently.
  • Personal fave Chris Britton caught on with the independent York Revolution according to Jim Seip. The Padres released Britton last month after allowed 47 baserunners and had a 10.45 ERA in 20.2 IP between Double-A and Triple-A. (h/t Chad Jennings)

So many Sox fans are gonna be mislead by it being Taylor Buchholz not Clay.

I think most that visit this site are aware of both Taylor and Clay Buchholz.

Boomer, I'm guilty as charged. I suppose the Rockies can hold onto Street and ride their hot streak, but I don't think they have much of a shot of overtaking the Dodgers and I would think that a contender in need of bullpen help will give them something worthwhile for him. He's still young and arbitration controlled, yes?

"I think most that visit this site are aware of both Taylor and Clay Buchholz."

I'm aware of that, just merely stating that when Buchholz name is used than most correlate that to Clay.

I think Penny is going to command a decent prospect or two. I know the Dodgers had issues with Penny, but I think a Hu/Lambo deal could benefit both sides. With the Mets, a Penny/Josh Thole swap would benefit both teams.

The Sox ain't getting anything without paying his salary.

If the Dodgers explicitly state they are not taking him back, it really throws a monkey wrench into a Hu/Lambo deal, which was pretty far-fetched to begin with.

"The Sox ain't getting anything without paying his salary."

Well, probably not true. But the general rule of the thumb is that the quality of the players returning is directly proportional to the amont of salary you pay. So if they pay his salary, they will get better players. But that doesn't mean they don't get anything if they don't pay...

He has an ERA north of 5.00. Any team giving up value for that deserves the scrub they get.

I'm guessing omar should have pulled that heilman for street trade when he had the chance

It would have kept us joe smith and endy chavez

Does any other Cardinals fan realize that we beat the Indians yesterday because of just Albert? Even on ESPNEWS, they said that he is the only one on the team that can hit. Hint, Hint Mozeliak. Make a freakin trade already.

Players that we should al LEAST inquire about:
Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe, Miguel Tejada, Mark Derosa, Chone Figgins, Jeremy Hermida, Dan Uggla, Cody Ross, Adam Dunn, Mark Teahen, Jermaine Dye, Adrian Beltre, and Carlos Lee (highly doubtful that he would be traded, owed a lot of money and he was taken out of the game yesterday) I think that the majority of these players are available and I think that the Cards would have the prospects and pieces to pull off a deal for most of these guys. In an ideal world though, Tejada at SS, Derosa at 3rd, and maybe Holliday in LF. No way this happens but it would be nice.

"He has an ERA north of 5.00. Any team giving up value for that deserves the scrub they get."

And he has a 4.09 ERA since the start of May... one could make the argument that he was getting acclimated to the American League, a much stronger hitting league than the National League, the league where Penny spent his whole career.

But I'm starting to come around to Penny, I'm all for putting Smoltz in the pen and keeping him as an emergency starter. Sure, Penny's only really good for 6 innings, but with the Sox bullpen and offense... well that's just fine with me.

Blanton is an innings-eater, Penny is not. With Blanton you're all but guaranteed 200 innings.

It's Cincinnati, not Cincinatti.

boomer you're kidding right? first of all, I would be embarrassed to be a Sox fan and not know the difference between our top prospect and a journeyman reliever in the NL on the opposite side of the nation. Then, on the Penny front I feel as a Sox fan that he is being overvalued, if the rumors are true. the Donald/penny swap, as good as it sounds being a sox fan, really shouldn't happen. realistically what do you guys see the Sox getting?

Penny has been just fine since May, and his ERA is only high because poor starts early on ballooned it. Penny should net at least one good prospect. If I were a NL team I would be all over Penny considering he has been pitching well in a superior offensive league.Provided he stays healthy I would bet his stats look good come the end of the season. It was not long ago Penny had double degit wins.

"the Donald/penny swap, as good as it sounds being a sox fan, really shouldn't happen. realistically what do you guys see the Sox getting?"

I hope they just hang onto Penny and DL Matsuzaka for the short term. Remember that usually Wakefield's back starts acting up around late July-Early August and he misses a few starts and his effectiveness is diminished from that point onwards anyway.

If the Sox can just get Penny to go 6 innings each start and hold the opponent to 3 runs or less, that is well enough for the 5th starter that is all they are counting on him for at this point, not as a big starter, they have Beckett, Lester as the stoppers, Penny is just another piece in the Cog and if Smoltz cannot go, or Penny falters? Better than trading him for some discard anyway. Eating 1/2 (or less) of the 5.5M of Penny's contract for this year is no big deal to Boston anyway if he all of a sudden starts pitching poorly and Bucholz/Bowden are both more than ready to get the call once again and step in to the rotation.

Matsuzaka is the key here, he has to agree to go onto the DL, he's admitted something is wrong already, just need to get him to go onto the DL and get himself healthy again and that way Smoltz can be called up and no more of this "Penny to X team" for a nobody, or some teams top prospect that will never happen.

"And he has a 4.09 ERA since the start of May... one could make the argument that he was getting acclimated to the American League, a much stronger hitting league than the National League, the league where Penny spent his whole career."

Yeah, if you ignore his 2008 season, maybe, you might say that.

I look at his 2008 and his 2009, and I repeat: "scrub".

Whoever compared Penny to Blanton

1) Blanton sucks. The Phillies were stupid to make that trade.

2) Blanton was under team control for 2.5 seasons. Penny is under team control for less than a season. Penny's also making more than Blanton is (assuming he hits the 170 IP bonus).

Speaking of Chris Britton, I just watched him close out a game last night and get a save again the Lancaster Barnstormers.

I'm exited to see what Theo can grab in trade for Penny. I'm hoping for a decent prospect or two.

"1) Blanton sucks. The Phillies were stupid to make that trade."

Why were they stupid to make that trade? Hindsight is 20/20. NOBODY saw Blanton falling on his face like he did in '09. Nobody. And he still pitched well through the stretch for them last year.

Blanton also had a healthy track record, ate innings, was younger and still under contract.
Not like Penny who is coming off arm surgery and has a litte reputation of running out of steam in the second half.

And a couple weeks ago you could have said his ERA was north of 6.00. At this point, Penny is pitching about as well as Blanton was last year when the Phillies traded for him. And, as we all know, the A's netted three pretty decent prospects for Blanton.

THe prospects weren't that great. Outman has done nicely but no one thought he was much and I doubt he has much of a future. Cardenas was the big part of the deal and he was blocked by Utley forever. Spencer was a throw in.

Sox won't get much for Penny, sorry Sox fans. He's definitely second tier ability.

that's a really dumb comment. Blanton helped them win the WS. THey don't win without him. Sorry that was a very good trade for the phils.
