Odds And Ends: Wagner, Peavy, Melhuse

Some links for Wednesday morning...

  • Billy Wagner says he could be pitching in the majors within 30 days, according to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News. If he returns in mid-July, the Mets would have time to evaluate Wagner before deciding whether to acquire more arms via trade.
  • The Royals signed ten of their draft picks, according to MLB.com's Rustin Dodd.
  • Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports that Evan Longoria never wonders what it would be like to play for the Rockies. Colorado, who selected Greg Reynolds instead of Longoria back in 2006, has probably wondered what it would be like to have Longoria.
  • Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune says the Padres have an insurance policy in place that would potentially recoup money for the team should Jake Peavy miss much time. The details aren't clear, as GM Kevin Towers hasn't looked at the policy yet.
  • Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that catcher Adam Melhuse retired. He had been playing for the Pirates' Triple A affiliate.
  • Carlos Quentin has had second thoughts about his decision to turn down an extension from the White Sox, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times

Wagner shouldn't rush himself back but he'd be a welcome addition. Start him out as the 2nd LOOGY to Feliciano and if his closing stuff is back, put him in the set up role. Of course he'd probably just blow the 8th inning.

Right, he is only one of the better closers the Mets have ever had and one of a handful of the best closers in the game since the millennium, but I'm sure he will just probably blow the 8th inning, because for some reason Mets fans like to act as if their good players suck. All he did last year was have a H/9 of 6.1, a BB/9 under 2, 5.2 K/BB, 10K/9, a 0.89 WHIP. The guy was dominant. I could never understand why so many people constantly complained about Wagner when he was our closer. Anyway, K-Rod will get the same treatment soon enough, as soon as he blows one save on his own, then two, then three, people will start saying he sucks and he isn't clutch. Wagner has been completely dominant during his 3 years with the Mets, but still people make misinformed comments about him.

If he can come back even close to how dominant he always was, this would be a huge boost for the Mets struggling bullpen (yes, their pen is overrated. K-Rod brings down the entire pen's total ERA. There really isn't another reliable arm in that pen anywhere.).

I couldn't agree more with that comment. I'm a die hard Mets fan and think it's typical of NY fans, especially Met fans, to fall out of favor with a player at any signs of struggles. Heck D. Wright was getting the heat at the start of the season and last I checked it's all worked out so far for him this year. I hated to see Wagner come into the game when he was with the Phillies and loved him as a Met. He has been nothing short of dominating in his career and if he has anything left it'll be great. Hopefully he and Putz can both come back sooner than later and be themselves and that would make a great tail end of the bullpen. Mets fans need to remember that although this has been a rough year so far the Mets are still only a few games out and at this point signs are good that all the Big players will return.

Agreed. I always scratched my head in confusion when I heard Mets fans complain about Wagner. Before his injury, he definitely put up top 10, arguably top 5 closer numbers. If he is half that good when he comes back, I'll take it.
