Steroids or not Mike Piazza is clearly a better hitter then McCann. Mauer on the other hand I can not argue. He's about as good of a hitter this generation regardless of position.

Come on, how can you argue O'Brien's argument that Piazza's defense drops him from being considered the best hitter?

the title is misleading... on the McCann article. I think what he's trying to say is Piazza's lack of defense takes him out of the running for best catcher overall, not best hitting
another thing... Harper's swing has a ton of unneeded movement

Is it only me or is Spilborghs exactly the type of player the Yankees need? Enough with the all star players, lets get some role players in there who do the little things right and actually show some dam intensity.
Jeter is one of my favorite players in the game but I am so sick of the "Yankee Way"
I really don't care about that anymore....throw some bats, break some helmets, toss some frigging water coolers!!!!!!! I would be fine with it....at least I know the players are passionate about the game!

and yet McCann won't even be starting the All-star game

I don't think O'Brien ever said either of them were better hitters than Piazza, or even better overall catchers.
He said he thought Johnny Bench was better overall and that he might eventually consider Mauer better than Bench.
He called Mauer and Mccann 2 of the best 5 hitting catchers of his lifetime, which is hard to argue with.

I liked the article a lot actually.
Its just kinda premature.

Jeter won two gold gloves with his bat, when there were clearly better fielders in the league. This makes just as much sense.

You know, I think Ryan Hanigan (even though older) has been an excellent rookie catcher.

Neither McCann or Mauer will surpass Piazza as the greatest offensive catcher. Both of them could go down with Bench in a 3 way tie for 2nd though.

I think if Mauer stays behind the plate until hes 35ish he might take that honor.
He has some amazing seasons in front of him

I think Piazza is the best hitting catcher ever. Mauer can hit for average, but his power isn't there. McCann's slugging numbers are better than Mauer's and he's been in the league one less year. Mauer might hit for better average, but McCann will have better slugging numbers. I think Piazza will always be the best hitting catcher in baseball history.

Jeter has very good hands and knows most hitters that have been around and does a good job of "cheating" by positioning himself in the field to set himself up, but yeah, his range definitely not near what it was. Same with Uggla of the Fish when it comes to soft hands and positioning well, only he never had the good range from the beginning, but is now learning the hitters and turning himself into a better than average fielder in the NL.
Jeter still has some good value in the NL and from games I have watched, has done an admirable job of covering some ground for A-Rod since his hip surgery and what may be his hopefully only temporary loss of range, just like Lowell's loss of range from the same labrum repair surgery.
Has anyone noticed that Utley seems to really be doing well with the same surgery?
Why Boston has been linked to Spilborghs also must be writers boredom. With Kotsay back from the DL after missing all of April and most of May and the ability to play all OF +1B, plus Kotsay with the exact same ability as Spilborghs and a better defender to play behind Kotsay, it is crazy to give up anything for him.

My mistake on above post, was supposed to be Baldelli and wrote Kotsay behind Kotsay.. Still asleep..
