Rangers To Pursue Pitching?

After it appeared Brandon McCarthy would hit the DL with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade, T.R. Sullivan at MLB.com chatted with Rangers GM Jon Daniels, who is going to turn to Doug Mathis for the open rotation spot for now. But he didn't rule out the possibility of a deal to shore up the position:

"'I'm open to it,' Daniels said. 'It's something we'll look into, but it's easier said than done. My expectation is we'll go with the guys we have. If there is a quality guy available, we'll look into it, but it's easier said than done.'"

Closer Frank Francisco is also hurting, and Daniels has made discussing relief pitching his "short-term focus," he told Sullivan.

The Rangers have been hit hard by the injury bug, but they remain atop the AL West with a 33-23 record, 4.5 games ahead of the Angels. Who makes sense to fill the holes? Are they still a legitimate contender?

So you're giving the Rangers a bunch of junk for a premium RF?

and didn't hamilton just go down?

the rangers have the prospects...so maybe they go for oswalt.

Arent the Rangers keeping tabs on Ben Sheets who is expected around August?

This just sounds like a perfect time for them to trade one of their catchers for some of Boston's pitching.

Also doubt the Rangers would want anything to do with Kenshin simply because he is mainly a flyball pitcher.

throw in Francouer lol

Oswalt has some type of no trade. He might be able to waive it if he's able to continue playing in Texas. When it comes to trades, if the Braves fall out of it, Javier Vazquez could become an option. If they don't want to part with prospects, they might be able to use Hank Blalock as a chip with the Mets via trade. With Putz down and Perez in his own world though, they might not be willing to trade a Brian Stokes or someone like that.

as a sox fan, i'm high on their low-a catcher federowicz, and varitek is doing well (enough)for now. so i think sox/rangers trade for one of their catchers has past.

and the sox pitching prospects (bowden, bard, buchholz) value has increased, due to their performance. so i really don't see a fit.

Sheets will need rehab time and judging from the way they are throwing massive amounts of workload pitch wise to converted middle relievers like Holland and leaving them in games when they have nothing left from a horrible bull pen, they are going to need to get more pitching from somewhere if they hope to get anywhere in the post season, if they can even hold onto the AL West when the Angels pitching slowly begins to come together as the Rangers (thin enough already) wears itself out from over use.

I don't believe Sheets is going to be back this season at all. His agent was interviewed very recently and wouldn't even say how Sheets was doing. I wouldn't be optimistic if I was a Rangers fan right now, as far as Sheets.

I think the Rangers are for real. Their offense is just incredible and they have the best farm system in the majors. I think the last person they should go after is Oswalt. He's overpaid and just isn't an ace anymore. He's not blowing that fastball past anyone now. The Rangers don't play the Reds alot either.

"He's not blowing that fastball past anyone now. The Rangers don't play the Reds alot either."

Hahahahahahaha! Touche', that is good.

I wonder if an intra-division trade would work? The A's have a lot of pitching, and the Rangers have a lot of hitting. Both lack what the other has.

If you ignore the A's current rotation, which seems set, they then still have Dana Eveland, Sean Gallagher, Gio Gonzalez, Henry Rodriguez and the DL'd Justin Duchscherer available, pushed out of the rotation by the A's top pitching prospects.

The A's need 3B and OF Prospects. What do the Rangers have in those areas? Looking at the minorleagueball top 20 prospect list, its almost all pitchers, ironically enough! And I am assuming that the Rangers would not trade Andrus or any of their pitchers, and I am pretty sure they would not trade Smoak (whom the A's really covet, so if a deal went there, the A's would probably have to pay a lot in pitching).

The Rangers biggest positional strength is Catcher, but that is a place that the A's do not need help in, with Kurt Suzuki in the Majors and Josh Donaldson at AA.

You're looking at a lot of groundballers or sinker ballers that would be potentially good trade candidates for the rangers.

If you want to go really cheap, Joel Piniero, Braden Looper, or even Brad Thompson would be decent additions to the rangers rotation. They keep the ball on the ground, and the Rangers would not have to part with much if any talent at all to get those kinds of deals done.

If you want to go expensive, Roy Halladay makes the most sense, and if the Jays fall out of contention, the Rangers definitely have everything the Jays could want to go get the deal done.

K-Machines and Flyball pitchers probably won't be as much help to the Rangers because of their ballpark.

How about Penny, Delcarmen and Bard for Blalock, Vizquel and Manuel Pina (young AA catcher)?

I would not make that trade. Bard is the closer when Papelbon walks.

Blalock is a HR or nothing guy, I don't think Theo will go for that.

Is Vizquel an upgrade over internal options?

How about Penny and MDC for Blalock and Vizquel.

Blalock gives us some insurance for Ortiz (though his OBP is horrible!)

Vizquel has lost a step, but is still a defensive upgrade over Lugo or Green (if Lowrie takes longer to come back)

Smoak for Buchholz anyone?

Cliff Lee and Carl Pavano may be of interest to the Rangers.

Smoak for Buchholz anyone?

Posted by: celtics464 | June 08, 2009 at 09:03 PM

Won't happen.

As a Rangers fan, I wouldn't make the Smoak for Buchholz trade.

Also, why would Boston do it? They do have Lars Anderson.

Erik Bedard for Neftali Feliz and Justin Smoak!

"Also, why would Boston do it? They do have Lars Anderson."

Because Smoak is a much better prospect than Lars.

"Erik Bedard for Neftali Feliz and Justin Smoak!"

No. Either one of those guys is too much for a half season of Bedard.

Vizquel to the BoSox, for a pitcher?

Vizquel to the BoSox, for a pitcher?

They don't have the best farm system anymore. Holland/Andrus/Teagarden are already up and a lot of the prospects have struggled this season.

Count on Daniels to acquire some bum.

Jeff Bennet and Vasquez for Nelson Cruz after hamilton comes back?

It's too bad the Rangers are as good as they are this year because I would give up quite a bit to see Nelson Cruz in Cardinal red. Just for fun though, would a package of Ryan Ludwick (replaces Cruz), Chris Perez(replaces the injured Francisco), Mitchell Boggs/PJ Walters (replaces McCarthy until he returns), and maybe someone like Tyler Greene or Joe Mather that could be brought up in the case of an injury, for Nelson Cruz? What do you guys think?

I'm hoping 1) your in a very sarcastic mood tonight, 2) you forgot to add in quite a few players the Rangers would give up, or 3) your drunk typing...

Javier Vazquez and Jeff Francoeur for Nelson Cruz

"I think the last person they should go after is Oswalt. He's overpaid and just isn't an ace anymore. He's not blowing that fastball past anyone now. "

Yeah never mind that according to fangraphs.com, Oswalt is throwing harder this year than in any year since 2005.

In all honesty I think pitching will be the deal breaker for Texas. With the Angels current rotation (Lackey, Santana, Saunders, Weaver, Escobar) that team is bound to win quite a few more games than they have.

The Rangers rotation is already playing way above its head and will return to Earth very soon. The offense is missing Hamilton but that should matter too much. If the Rangers can acquire two more quality starting pitchers, the race in the AL west will be very close.

I'm guessing the Rangers end up trading part of their farm for Brad Penny and will have Sheets back in August.

When it comes down to it though, I just don't think that will be enough to hold off the Angels. I know a lot of people are down on them right now, but that team has convinced more over the last 5 years that they are for real. All they do is win, even when they shouldn't.

Who knows, the wild card could end up coming from the West this year. Good luck Rangers.

"They don't have the best farm system anymore. Holland/Andrus/Teagarden are already up and a lot of the prospects have struggled this season.

Kinsler5, I thought you did us a favor by dissappearing on here. You have nothing but ignorant comments about the rangers.

And please tell me who has a better farm system right now, yeah we lost three to the majors but we have also had a lot more emerge at different levels such as boscan, font, pimentel, pina, kiker, etc. to go along with feliz, perez, and smoak.

Also what makes you think Daniels with aquire some bum to help us? He sure aquired some bums last time we were in the race at the deadline...Carlos Lee, Matt Stairs, and Kip Wells at the top of my head, not to mention snagging Nelson Cruz in the Lee deal.

"If they hadn't been so damned greedy, they could have had Michael Bowden - who by now would probably be their #3 starter."

I think Bard was probably the most ever offered for either Teagarden or Salty over the winter but were turned down by Texas. Wouldn't Bard look nice in that Ranger BP about now?

Wondering anyones opinion on Andrus for Bucholz?

Neither is really better than the other. Of course it would be almost the top prospect for the other, but it fits a need.

The starting pitcher of the future for Rangers. Plus they have the pieces to make it work, Vizquel can play SS about 4 days a week, and they have people to fill in when he needs time off.

"Wondering anyones opinion on Andrus for Bucholz?"

No chance on Boston end. Lowrie will be back in a couple of weeks.

If the Sox would not trade Bucholz for Salty (or Bowden either for that matter) during the pre season, why would they trade him now for a position they will have covered in a couple of weeks who has yet to make an error at SS in 50+ games at the MLB level?

Too add to above post. If Bucholz goes in a deal for a SS, it had better be in a deal for a bonafide SS, like a JJ Hardy.

"I think Bard was probably the most ever offered for either Teagarden or Salty over the winter but were turned down by Texas. Wouldn't Bard look nice in that Ranger BP about now?"

Yeah, Bard was the most offered by Boston for either catcher. Which is a stupid deal for Texas because you don't trade a young starting catcher for a relief prospect, regardless of how good said relief prospect is.

Closer prospects do not grow on trees, just like catching and when Rangers have 4 catchers and a BP in shambles, struggling now to find people to come into games to shut down other teams, any help am pretty sure is appreciated.

Hind sight now looks pretty well from the Boston side on Texas declining.

Blalock has been linked to the Blue Jays. I could see Blalock being moved but I dont think the Rangers will get much for him at all. However I really see him as a big option for the Blue Jays in the off season to step in as a 1B/3B/DH bench guy next season if he'll sign for cheap.

As for pitching for the Rangers, to be honest, that team HAS to and I mean absolutely MUST make a splash in the off season with a free agent pitcher. There will potentially be some decent guys on the market and really, all the Rangers need to do is get themselves some pitching and theyll be one of the best teams in baseball, bar none.

I see them spending some serious coin on pitching in the off season but they have to make sure to pick up the right guys, they need ground ball pitchers more than they need strikeout pitchers because that stadium eats up high velocity guys.

I see Doug Davis as an option for them at this point. They should trade for him and extend him as well and then I think the names they should pursue in the off season are Wolf and Bedard because lefties do better in that park than righties.

They could also use a couple of relief options, one of which should be a closer type guy maybe Wagner if he's cheap and Gonzalez would be another name.

With pitching, the Rangers would rule the west with an iron fist.

is neftali feliz that far way from coming up and helping?

Actually Billiken, I did forget to put someone else in. It was supposed to be four for two deal with Nelson Cruz and Elvis Andrus coming to St. Louis. I didn't even realize that I forgot to put Andrus's name in there so thanks.

My word there is so many bad post on here I don't know where to start.

1. Elvis is proving himself in the big leagues, while Buchholz fans 40 year olds in the minors. Texas would laugh in Bostons face at that offer. Also, would you REALLY rather have JJ Hardy than Elvis Andrus? If so you don't watch, or know baseball.

2. Texas has a surplus of catchers yes, but that doesn't mean we should give into any old offer boston throws at us. There is no need to rush. They are all young and catchers always have value. If Boston isn't willing to work out a deal, or Texas for that matter, there are always more trading partners.

Did you really just call one of the top pitching prospects in baseball Holland a converted middle reliever? lmao

Ok back to the topic. Texas needs to fix the bullpen first and foremost, and it would cost alot less to do so. Solid veteran relievers don't cost near as much as a proven or young starter. Texas could trade mid level prospects and fix the bullpen. I'd love to see us add a starter for the right price, but we will see how that works out. For now we are still in first playing well, so no need to make a rash decision.

Cruz and Andrus for what? Perez and??? not much else. Thats an absolute terrible offer. Why does everyone think they can just rip teams off? this is MLB The Show. That might be one of the worst trade offers I've ever seen.

Every day Eddie is looking worse with every outing.

Seriously, I was watching him against the Jays tonight and when he threw his first fastball I said "yep, here comes a homer and a good inning for the Jays", yep.. it happened

That kid Moscoso looked like he could have some upside somewhere but his 89-90mph fastball with no movement and little control aint gonna get the job done in the show.

Mathis... where do I even begin. This guy is a horrible pitcher by major league standards. His control was awful, his breaking stuff is flat and his fastball is 88mph. Are the Rangers honestly going to leave this guy in the rotation?

Bottom line is, the Rangers need to make a move for a top 3 starter and a reliver right now if they intend on hanging onto 1st place because the Angels arent far back.
