Red Sox, Bay Yet To Resume Extension Talks

The Boston Globe's Adam Kilgore reports that the Red Sox have yet to resume talks about a contract extension with outfielder Jason Bay.

"There's nothing new," Bay said yesterday. "There's really nothing to say about it. It's been a hot topic. I understand that. Until there's something to say, there's nothing to say."

"There's still a lot of time left, plus there was some real bad timing with the draft, all the time leading up to it," Bay said. "I understand whether it happens or not, but now is not a great time. Maybe when things settle down. But like I said, there's nothing exciting."

The two sides ended negotiations back in March, and since then all we've heard is that they still haven't talked. Bay is enjoying a tremendous season at the perfect time, hitting .280-.402-.587 in 264 plate appearances.

Cinderella better sign that extension before his carriage turns into a pumpkin.

Boston will still be the main suitor after the season, even if an extension is not worked out before the season ends.

The Yankees may have already ruined any chance of getting him anyway thanks to Chamberlain and Burnett's constantly throwing at him anyway. Imagine Bay might have a long memory of Chamberlain especially throwing at him 3 times and hitting him twice.

I thought it was already stated that they wouldn't be making any kind of deal until after the all star break?

To get technical -- the rest Sox used to not even negotiate during the season. They truly fear the Yankees on this one.

Bay understands it's part of the game -- that won't stop him and the Yankees... truly worrisome. They may knock his Sox off... pun not originally intended.

There once was a fielder named Bay,
He'd stay with the Red Sox they'd say,
They decided to wait, but then found out too late,
That the Yankees had billions to pay.

The End

I think Jason Bay wants to play for the Red Sox.

I doubt he'll sign a contract extension though. It's obvious the Yankees would at least be interested in him. Why would you limit yourself to negotiating with just Boston, when you can negotiate with Boston AND New York, driving up the price for both.

I believe he'll become a free agent, and then we'll see how much the Red Sox are willing to spend. If the Yankees offer Bay more money than the Red Sox want to pay, they'll just stop pursuing Bay, and go after Matt Holiday.

While I wouldn't mind seeing Holiday in a Sox uniform, I just don't see it happening as long as Boras is his agent. I doubt the Sox would part with the talent Billy Beane is going to demand, just for a rental. Unless Holiday were to agree to a long term extension up front, look for Bay to work it out with Boston and Holiday in pinstripes by next season.

Jason Bay is having this thing we like to call a career year. And he's on the wrong side of 30. And he's not a good defensive player.

He's a good player, but if the market continues its downfall, 3/30-35MM range is a fair deal for Bay. He'll probably get more than that, but that's fair.

Theo knows this. Theo's not an idiot.

"He's a good player, but if the market continues its downfall, 3/30-35MM range is a fair deal for Bay. He'll probably get more than that, but that's fair."

That is what he's probably worth. He'll be looking for a 4/60 though. And I don't think Theo will pay him that. So it will come down to what is more important to Bay. That extra guaranteed year and more money, or playing for Boston.

Theo doesn't play around. He offers what he thinks a player is worth, and refuses to add even a million more. I honestly don't think Bay will be playing in Boston next year.

And SoxRox: Holliday is a free agent after this year. The Red Sox obviously aren't going to trade for him in the middle of the year. And no other team is either, because he won't accept a long term extension with Boras as his agent.

That was exactly my point. The A's will try and unload him before the deadline. They'd be fools not to try and get something for him, given what they gave up to get him in the first place. The Yankees would be a great fit and they likely will make a play for him, given their relationship with Boras. The ONLY reason for the Sox to go after him is to keep him from the Yankees this season. And the ONLY way they would even think of it is if Holiday commited to the Red Sox, long term. That isn't happening either.
The whole point of my post was to show that the Yankees won't have a lot of interest in Bay at the end of the season. Holiday is their target. Bay likes it in Boston and Theo will find a way to get a fair deal done.

Holliday is guaranteed to become a free agent. Boras is his agent. The Yankees won't trade for someone who is guaranteed to become a free agent when they have a LF already. The only team that makes even the slightest sense is the Mets. Because they need fielders, and would be willing to sign him to a 150M extension during the season. And anything less than 150M contract extension offer just isn't going to get Holliday's signature.

Bay may like it in Boston, but Bay is 31 and not getting any younger. He wants a 5 year contract, minimum. He thinks he deserves one. Do you honestly think Theo thinks Bay deserves a 5 year contract?

The only way he signs an extension during this season with Boston, is if Theo decides to give him a 5 year contract. Even a 5 year contract might not get it done.

And Theo simply will not do that. Theo will play hardball and wait until Bay becomes a free agent, and hope that no other teams offer him a 5 year deal, so that he can offer him 3-4 years. That is just how Theo operates. Not that you can really complain, because it has won them 2 championships in the last 6 years. But that is the strategy he has used the past decade, and I don't see it changing with Bay.

Holiday would be a major upgrade for the Yanks in the outfield, and would tear up "Home Run Derby Field" from the plate.
Yes, I think Cashman would make a trade for him if it would help him avoid a bidding war in the offseason. Holiday would jump at the chance to go from the last place A's to a contender. If a deal were contingent on him signing an extension, I think he'd do it, assuming the money was at least decent. If the Yankees remain in the hunt, and there's no reason to believe they won't, Holiday's bat along with the improved defense could be just the ticket. Given Cashman's relationship with Boras, it's at least conceivable that a deal could be worked out on an extension. The Yankees are the only team that stand a chance of getting that to work. It's worth a couple of prospects, and maybe a roster player, if they can lock him up for the next five years or so.

As for Bay and the Sox, I agree that a 3-4 year deal makes sense. Bay's having a great walk year but may want a shorter term anyway. If the economy hasn't improved much, he may see some benefit to a 1 or 2 year deal in the hope of a better deal when things improve. I don't think his age will factor into it that much. He's a year older than Holiday but, I think they're pretty close in talent and value.

SoxRox,

The Yankees are not going trade top tier talent for 1/2 season rental. And yes that's all Holliday will be because Boras isn't letting him sign an extension. Although I do hope they pursue him during the offseason instead of Bay. I think he's the better hitter and is definately the better fielder. 3-4-5 of Teix, A-Rod, and Holliday would be f**king sweet. But I'd like to see a reasonable deal instead of the outrageous overpays this past offseason. Anyone see Holliday taking 5/90 deal? I'd like that cuz then Jackson gets to stay in the minors until Swisher's deal is up then it's Holliday, Jackson, and Melky I'd think.
