ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that, with only five teams more than six games under .500, it's a tough time to be a buyer. Here are the details from his latest Rumblings and Grumblings:
- There are many trade candidates in Washingon, but free agent-to-be Nick Johnson is the likeliest to move of them all.
- Adam Dunn's price would be "astronomical" according to one executive.
- One of Danys Baez and George Sherrill will likely be dealt, and it seems more likely that Baez will move. As one official says, "he's throwing great, but he's still Danys Baez."
- The D'Backs would prefer to move prospective free agents, like Doug Davis and Chad Tracy. Stark writes that Davis could fit on the Mets.
- One executive believes Brian Giles "should get released."
- Cla Meredith could bring a decent return for the Padres, who could also move Chris Young and Kevin Kouzmanoff.
- The Royals could move reliever Ron Mahay.
- At this point the Astros still aren't likely to sell. No one expects them to move Roy Oswalt, but Ivan Rodriguez, LaTroy Hawkins and Jose Valverde could be dealt if the Astros decide to sell.
- One official says the Pirates would "love to move Jack Wilson."
- Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee aren't going anywhere, but Mark DeRosa is becoming "more marketable by the minute."
- Matt Holliday will hit the market if the A's don't play very well for the next few weeks. The A's will want the equivalent of a first rounder and a sandwich pick and, because few elite bats are available, at least one exec thinks they'll get a good return.
- The A's are worried he'll accept arbitration if they offer it, but Stark hears that Scott Boras would likely direct Holliday towards a better hitter's park, even if it was for less money.
- The Red Sox aren't in a hurry to deal Brad Penny. If they go for a shortstop, they'd want a short-term fix only.
- The Rockies- definitely not sellers right now- could eventually look to add a setup man.
- Delmon Young is "exceptionally available."
- The Brewers won't discuss dealing Mat Gamel or Alcides Escobar.
- The Rays would like to add a reliever, but they're one of many teams that can't add much payroll.
Me thinks the Cubs might be looking to trade some pitching to get some offense.

Sorry wrong thread.

I don't see how Doug Davis is a goo fit for the Mets...They need bats, not pitchers.

"One official says the Pirates would "love to move Jack Wilson.""
Is it just me or does it seem like we've heard this from PIT every year for the last three years only for them to botch moving him by asking for too much?

Could the Mets trade for both Davis and Tracy?
Posted by: GD31892 | June 18, 2009 at 02:43 PM
I wonder what Young would cost. In the right environment he might still turn out to be a solid player.
Posted by: bjsguess | June 18, 2009 at 02:51 PM
Would a change of scenario trade of Jeff Francoeur for Delmon Young work out? who says no the quickest; twinkies or bravos?
Posted by: aj7380 | June 18, 2009 at 02:51 PM
Why is Holliday accepting arb a bad thing? He accepts arb, the A's have a really really good player on a 1 year deal. Considering that the entire starting rotation and the 2 best bullpen guys all make league minimum, the A's have cash to pony with.
If they trade Holliday, they'll get a solid return. Even if it means the A's have to eat salary to get the return they desire.

aj, the twins will deny u in a moment. young has a chance, frenchy looks bad now
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | June 18, 2009 at 02:54 PM
Young needs the Halladay treatment. Send him back through the minors for 1.5 years and let him regain some confidence. He still has the physical tools to be an All Star and his attitude is better than advertised

Francouer has shown life the past week or so
Posted by: bravoboy10 | June 18, 2009 at 02:58 PM
"One executive believes Brian Giles "should get released."
I mean, when you have the worst WAR of any qualified player in the game at -1.6, then that's obviously a possibility. Even for one of the most underrated players of the decade.
"Is it just me or does it seem like we've heard this from PIT every year for the last three years only for them to botch moving him by asking for too much?"
I don't understand Pittsburgh's fascination with Wilson.
I get that they've sucked for a long time so even a decent player gets hyped a lot, but god damn.
Wilson is a solid defensive shortstop, but he's been a below replacement level hitter in six of the last eight years, and he's had one season with an OPS over .690 in the past five years. And he's paid like he can hit. The guy shouldn't land them anything, so they should appreciate getting salary relief and a prospect, if that.

im wondering if he meant he should get released from SD, as in traded, not cut
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | June 18, 2009 at 03:04 PM
I wonder what the Tigers would have to give up to get Holliday from Oakland?
Posted by: Slick | June 18, 2009 at 03:05 PM
Young and Francouer have become no tool players. No power, no contact, no discipline, no speed, but at least Frency can field a little.
Posted by: bigpat | June 18, 2009 at 03:15 PM
I wish the Cards would look into Kouzmanoff and Young or Tracy and Davis. Both sets would be upgrades at 3rd and in the Cards rotation, respectively.
Posted by: Billiken | June 18, 2009 at 03:19 PM
Yeah, Francoeur has been hitting for contact a bit better as of late after an awful May. He still has a cannon and may end up hitting ~270 or so. The problem is he still cant walk or hit for power.
So Francoeur will get you some contact, ++ arm, hustle, and lots of jerseys sold to southern ladies but not much else.

"im wondering if he meant he should get released from SD, as in traded, not cut"
No.. he said released, my guess is that he meant released. The guy has been absolutely freaking horrible this year.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 03:23 PM
he has been horrible this yr, and that is why i thought he could have meant he needs to get out of SD
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | June 18, 2009 at 03:30 PM
He's been the worst player in baseball so far this year statistically, so you can't just blame the park.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 03:34 PM
im not blaming the park, im saying maybe he needs a new scenery
'I wish the Cards would look into Kouzmanoff and Young or Tracy and Davis. Both sets would be upgrades at 3rd and in the Cards rotation, respectively.'
im pretty sure tracy hasnt played 3rd for a long time, and if i remember, he wasnt that good there...

Could the Mets trade for both Davis and Tracy?
Posted by: GD31892 | June 18, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Yeah, all the D-backs want is a bag of Wright's bats. I know it seems like a bad trade, but the Mets can take that hit.
Posted by: jdub | June 18, 2009 at 03:53 PM
"im pretty sure tracy hasnt played 3rd for a long time, and if i remember, he wasnt that good there..."
Tracy has played just 32 innings at third base in 2008/2009, but he actually posted a solid +4.1 UZR/150 in 334 games there during 2004-2007, so he seems like a decent option at third base, defensively at least. Unfortunately he was always mostly a platoon hitter and now he's been struggling for two years running.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Tracy only moved to 1st because of his bad knees. But this year he's been pretty solid at 3rd. It's kinda funny watching him throw to 1st though. It seems he has to put all his might into every throw.

Could the following work as a 3-way deal involving the Giants, Indians, and Padres?
Giants get:
Mark DeRosa (to play 2B)
Kevin Kouzmanoff (to platoon with Ishikawa at 1B)
Indians get:
RHP Cla Meredith
RHP Henry Sosa (Giants prospect)
RHP Kevin Pucetas (Giants prospect)
RHP Osiris Matos (Giants prospect)
Padres get:
OF Nate Schierholtz
LHP Aaron Laffey
Where does this deal fall apart?
Posted by: baseballistic | June 18, 2009 at 05:23 PM
"Where does this deal fall apart?"
When the deal clearly benefits the Giants and hurts the Padres.
San Francisco does give up some talent but they land the two best pieces in the deal in DeRosa and Kouzmanoff.
Kouzmanoff has declined as a hitter but oddly enough he's hit much better at Petco than away from it this season. But he's still a decent get as there's still some good upside in hit bat, not to mention that he's improved his defense at third base. And he doesn't hit arbitration until next season.
Meanwhile, they're going to give up Meredith too, who's been one of their best relievers recently. He hasn't posted an FIP over 3.91 in each of his four full seasons in the majors, and even in Petco that's still pretty good.
If the Pads were willing to give up Kouzmanoff and Meredith, they could land far more value than Schierholtz and Laffey, who don't appear to be much more than mediocre everyday players at best.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 05:34 PM
scribble, Tracy was good but like someone else said, he moved cause of injury. I thought he also had arm problems, but im not sure.
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | June 18, 2009 at 05:49 PM
"scribble, Tracy was good but like someone else said, he moved cause of injury. I thought he also had arm problems, but im not sure."
Didn't know that, but either way, he's pretty much worthless unless he starts hitting like he did pre-2008.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 06:08 PM
Where does this deal fall apart? Matos does nothing for me Meredith also is a who cares.
How about Mark DeRosa For
Henry Sosa & Kevin Pucetas
Multi team trade are very hard to get done and I don't think they have any interest in dealing Laffey.
Posted by: baseballnuts | June 18, 2009 at 06:13 PM
I don't think Sosa and Pucetas would be enough to get DeRosa, and Jonathan Sanchez's trade value is down the toilet, which is the problem.
Sosa, Pucetas, and Matos for DeRosa on the other hand, seems like too much for the Giants to give up (though I may be higher on Matos than most, despite his MLB struggles).
DeRosa to SF seems like an obvious fit though.
Posted by: baseballistic | June 18, 2009 at 06:23 PM
"Where does this deal fall apart? Matos does nothing for me Meredith also is a who cares."
Meredith is a very good reliever, so while he may do nothing for you, he could likely do something for 29 teams in this game, excluding Boston.
And honestly, I wouldn't give up much more than Sosa for DeRosa, considering how good Sosa has been in AA and the fact that DeRosa is more of a league average player and will be a free agent after this season.
I'm not so sure that DeRosa is a perfect fit though, as this team looks like they could really use a charge of power. I know that Garko wouldn't offer it, but trying to land him in a package with DeRosa wouldn't be the worst idea either.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 18, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Garko is also available since he will be Arby Ellig. after this season same goes with Shoppach the Indians right now could replace both no problem.
If the Giants would offer that deal for DeRosa it would be a done deal IMO.
I have heard the latest rumors are that the cardinals would offer Motte and Boggs for DeRosa.
Unless totally overwhelmed I look for the Indians to wait until right at the deadline
Posted by: baseballnuts | June 18, 2009 at 07:19 PM
I think the Rays should make a play for Cla Meredith. Would Reid Brignac be enough....or too much?
Posted by: tolo316 | June 18, 2009 at 09:50 PM
In that case, hypothetically, could the deal be re-worked to involve the Nationals and look something like...
Giants get:
2B Mark DeRosa
1B Nick Johnson
Nationals get:
1B Ryan Garko
RHP Osiris Matos
Indians get:
LHP Joe Beimel (gives them a quality lefty reliever)
RHP Henry Sosa
RHP Kevin Pucetas
Doesn't seem like the Nats get shortchanged here since Beimel and Johnson are both free agents after this season...unless they'd prefer the draft picks.
Thoughts?
Posted by: baseballistic | June 18, 2009 at 10:16 PM
my guess is the Nats would prefer the 2 or 4 picks(depending on A/B status') and draft their own players. Garko and Matos dont sound like much to be excited with(although i dont know about Matos...)
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | June 18, 2009 at 10:29 PM
The Giants don't need Mark DeRosa's bat. They're not going to be a playoff contender. It's a bad deal because it benefits the Giants greatly.
Posted by: AlexBucura | June 19, 2009 at 12:22 AM
"my guess is the Nats would prefer the 2 or 4 picks(depending on A/B status') and draft their own players."
Nationals also realize they are playing with fire getting any picks at all with Johnson and his injury history, the guy is always one weird play away from another broken leg, or another freak injury and they won't get squat.
Why SFG won't try to get the guy and Nat's won't really work something out is bewildering. SF has the young pitchers that the Nat's totally lack and Nat's ought to be desperate to unload "glass ware" Johnson at all costs before his next past due DL trip occurs.

I don't know if Reid Brignac will ever hit, but with all the injuries the Rays have, and Bartlett just returning, I dont' think they will move him.

From the referenced Stark article. In the "Ready to rumble" section, 7th headline:
" The Young and the deal-less: The Twins are out there hunting for bullpen depth and young middle infielders. It probably won't come as a shock that they're letting teams know the enigmatic Delmon Young is exceptionally available. "
Posted by: mateodh | June 19, 2009 at 01:20 AM
I bet the Braves can keep Francoeur and swing a deal for Delmon Young. The Twins definitely need middle infielders. Traditionally, that has been a position of strength for the Braves. Diory Hernandez, Brandon Hicks, Travis Jones, and Robert Brooks might be good options. The Braves also have Boone Logan, Luis Valdez, and some other young relievers.
Posted by: chitchens | June 19, 2009 at 08:06 AM
Delmon Young isn't finished imo and if he can be had for cheap it'd be a low risk high reward type.
The Mets most certainly aren't a fit for Doug Davis ... top of the rotation SP or bats ARE!
I don't know why it keeps getting wrote but WHY THE HELL WOULD MATT HOLLIDAY ACCEPT ARBITRATION?
And does it really need to be said that the Brewers aren't looking to trade Gamel or Escobar?
Of course they're not.
He is the best player availible in the FA class this year, he's playing well in a pitchers park, he's in his prime, he's a star & he's actually playing good defense this year.
Why would he accept arbitration to stay in Oakland? Especially when he figures to sign a 4-7 year contract that will more than set him up for life AND basically let him pick where he wants to play?
Posted by: OhPityMe | June 19, 2009 at 09:01 AM
Delmon Young has been a cancer since the monor leagues. He is the one that threw the bat at the umpire years ago, and the Rays had enough of his lazy atiitude and couldn't coach or discipline the kid. He has the same issues in Minnesota, but now he can't hit well enough to be an everyday player there as well as being a defensive liablity. How on earth he was the #1 pick in the draft is amazing, this guy is such a problem child. Rays got Bartlett/Garza for him and Brendan Harris, sorry Twins, you will never recoup that for Young.
