Bay, Red Sox To Begin Negotiations

According to the Boston Globe's Tony Massarotti, contract negotiations between the Red Sox and outfielder Jason Bay are expected to pick up later this week.

Bay is batting .260/.380/.527 this season with 20 home runs and 72 RBI.  He has spoken openly about feeling comfortable in Boston and the club would definitely love to keep him around.  He's just 30 years of age and has shown no signs of slowing down offensively.  What might the outfielder command?  A five-year, $50MM deal similar to the contract handed to teammate J.D. Drew?  The Red Sox don't have an abundance of outfield talent on the farm, so their hand may be forced.

You mean 5 year, $70 million.

And he can definitely command more than that, at least now. If he continues to slump, then maybe not.

good for us yankee fans, if he signs with the sox, then it is almsot a free signing of matt holliday...and id rather have holliday than bay on a good season

Wasn't there a report earlier in the day/yesterday saying there were no signs of negotiations?

I think Massarotti is one of the worst writers for the BG.

The Yankees can have Holliday. The guy is mediocre when not playing at Coors Field.

hes just having a bad year....everyone has them he will be reall good next year one of the best

Well I'm not so sure if the Yanks will land Holliday....but I am pretty sure the Sox were going to sign either Holliday or Bay in the offseason and I'd rather see Bay over Holliday.

If Holliday could put up those numbers in Coors, imagine what he could do in that band box at Fenway....

well if we do get him, he wont be as much as if he was having a good year this year so we will be getting at least an above average player for not as much money as he is worth. ( also he is much better defensivly than Damon and with a-jax coming up hopefully next year and garder and melky..thats a set future outfield

You do realize that they are both ~2 WAR players so far through '09. In other words, dead even. And Bay is putting up his career best year and is older, while Holliday is putting up his career worst year.

If Holliday gets the same amount Bay does, the Holliday deal will end up better.

If Cashman signs Holliday this offseason for less than what Epstein gives Bay, the Yanks just one-upped the Red Sox.

Not to mention Holliday being on the wrong side of 30. There are better OF choices for the Yankees instead of him. Bay is a great player but I don't mind him going back to the Sox.

I thought younger was the right side of 30. Holliday's 29.

If Holliday could be signed for a 3 or 4 year deal I think Cashman would be serious about going after him. I would hate to see the Yanks without Damon though....he has no arm but besides that is a heck of a player and goes all out 24/7. Really wish Steinbrenner wasn't so keen on signing Posada because I would love to see Damon DHing

Holliday is going to be the best signing of the off-season. He's good for 850-900 OPS with + defense and + base running. Solid all the way around.

holliday does all the small things right..bay is a great player and id love him in my outfield but holliday just beats bay in every categorie..even just by a little

If Holliday ends up with the Yanks then the Red Sox are in trouble. The new Yankee Stadium plays out as an extreme hitter's park just like Coors and Holliday put up superstar numbers there. Not to mention he plays excellent defense in LF and Bay plays well below average LF D. I'm really hoping that the Braves pursue Holliday though in the off-season especially if 5 years 50 million is the going rate right now, however if the yanks want this guy then they won't be outbid

Don't be quick just yet that Holliday won't sign a huge deal... He could get hot in the second half and his agent is Scott Boras.

people can try to put holliday on the pedestal all they like, but bay is they better player THIS year. Beane cant even give halliday away right now with the way he has hit through the first half, and say all you want about him having an "off year", every sportscaster including this website predicted a huge dropoff in numbers when he left the rockies and so far have not been even close to wrong. point it, bay rakes no matter where he plays, halliday needs a hitters park to have success, then again maybe the yankees are a good choice...

this isnt like were comparing bay to teixiera or arod, bay and holliday might as well be carbon copies for the exception that each guy is better at some of the smaller un-noticed stats, holliday hits for average, bays has a better fielding percentage over a longer career. the rbi's, ops, home runs and such are mostly alike, to end up with either guy is a win

Beane likes the draft so unless he gets a great package for Holliday he will take the picks. You are correct that many expected a drop off in Hollidays numbers after he got traded but nobody expected him to go to the worst lineup in baseball with one of the worst fields to hit at as well. Hollidays road splits suggest he would have a .300+ avg with around a .850 OPS and 20-25 HR power potential.

Holliday has had a tough first half in a horrible lineup at a gigantic stadium with more foul territory than anywhere in baseball.

I'm not defending Holliday because I think he will be a Yankee, I'm defending him because I think he is a great ball player who really has no flaws in his game. Both Bay and Holliday are great players, but I view Bay as just a power bat as opposed to a complete player.

Personally I think Holliday winds up with the Braves. They have the most pressing need for a right handed hitting left fielder than anyone else in baseball.

It's funny that a Yankee fan is calling Fenway a bandbox when it is currently 17th most home run friendly park compared to Yankee Stadium which is 1st according to ESPN's Park Factors.
And how is Bay, who is a career .280/.375/.517, worse in every category compared to Holliday who has a career line of .281/.350/.450 away from Coors Field in 384 games. Holliday is a byproduct of the thin air in Denver. Any team that signs him this winter believes that they are getting a .315/.384/.538 hitter is very mistaken.

Not necessarily, bravesfan. While their offense would be scary, baseball is based off of run differential, not runs scored. As long as the Sox have enough offense to score more runs than the pitching gives up, they'll be just fine. And while Holliday is a better defender than Bay, he is by no means excellent.

He has a career UZR/150 rating of over 10 IIRC, he is well above average in LF. And like soxfan02 said Yankee stadium is the most hitter friendly so his offensive numbers should spike right back to his rockies days if he winds up in NY which makes him far more valuable than Bay

soxfan02 are you seriously trying to turn this into a Yankee vs Red Sox debate in the terms of insulting Yankee Stadium? Both are band boxes happy?

Whether a player goes to Fenway or goes to Yankee stadium, expect a spike in their numbers because BOTH stadiums are great to hit in, just like coors field was. Hollidays swing however would be perfect for Fenway, so that is why I am happy he is not going there.

as long as holliday ends up in a fairly neutral park (braves) or a hitter's park (yankees) he will become the better player between he and Bay. As melonis pointed out they have both been worth roughly 2 WAR and getting out of Oakland would push Holliday ahead

my bad, holliday has a UZR/150 rating of 6.8 for his career but Bay is -7.4 for his career. That's a big difference

bravesfan22193 I like the Braves shot at getting Holliday. He would be the perfect fit for them. Is Church controlled through 2010? If so I like an outfield with Holliday in left, Mclouth in center and a platoon of Church and Diaz in right

Yup, and if you are looking back to 2007 and 2008 seasons, you can see that compared to Jason Bay, Holliday is a significantly better outfielder.

He is controlled through 2010 but I see them bringing only one of Church and Diaz back. They still have Jordan Schafer at AAA and though he failed this year he is still viewed as a top prospect by the organization and will be starting in CF in 2010 barring major injury. But you are right, Holliday is a good fit in the lineup as well because a 3-4-5 of Chipper, Holliday, and McCann not only provides some power (all three are 20+ homer guys) but they also all have very high OBP's. I really think Holliday winds up in Atlanta or New York, don't see another reasonable fit

Back to Bay though, if the deal really is 5 years 50 million dollars then good job by the red sox. Bay can be counted on to be about a 3.5-4 WAR player each year imo which is easily worth 10 million a year. And thank you for not setting the market ridiculously high for next year's FA

What's the talk about Bay having "a career year" even based on? I think he was probably a better played in 2005 and 2006. He may end up having his best HR year, although it probably winds up being close, even though he always struggled to hit homers at PNC Park. He isn't going to match any of the other numbers he put up in those seasons. His OPS this year is actually almost identical to his rookie year.

Bay is having a typical strong season while people are seeing the real Holliday in Oakland. Also got love MFY fans defending Holliday like they own his rights already. Give your self righteousness a rest cuz its getting real old fast! So Hollidays excuse is playing in a pitchers park on a poor hitting A's team right! Funny how Bay managed to produce playing in Pitt all those years. Bottom line is Bay is the better player who will earn the big bucks in Boston whereas Holliday will be the bust for whoever, hopefully the evil empire, signs him!

Alex, you really think Holliday will be almost a free signing for the MFY? You do know he's represented by one Scott Boras right!

The Red Sox don't have an abundance of outfield talent on the farm, so their hand may be forced. ?????

three of their top 10 prospects are outfielders. 2 of them are 4 tool players

I agree with MLBProspects. The Red Sox are loaded in the OF with guys like Kalish, Reddick. A guy like Che-Hsuan Lin is fairly underrated, and wasn't Lars Anderson supposed to be getting some work in LF? They are loaded in the OF.

That said, they should resign Bay. Best case scenario, they start seeing the guys like 2010 and early 2011. Assuming the injury clause doesn't allow Boston to opt out of the Drew deal, Drew will be in the final year of his deal and a potential tradeable asset if they so desire. It's possible that those guys take until 2012 if they slow play it, putting the timeline in a solid spot.

Fenway is a doubles park... it has consistently had a park factor below 1 for HRs, meaning it favors pitchers. It's not a "bandbox" by any means...

Meanwhile, the current index for HRs at Yankee Stadium is 1.525... absolutely blowing away every other park in the game. Both this year and every year since 2001 when park factors were recorded.

Look at the splits this year for all of the Yankee regulars.

It's a horribly flawed ballpark.

I would think the best course of action would be a. extend Bay 4 or 5 more years. Move him to DH in 2011 when Papi's contract expires. Move Drew to LF and bring up Reddick to play RF full time.

Reddick is improving his plate discipline without seeing a dip in his power numbers. In fact, outside of continuing to improve his BB rates, there's nothing to suggest he's anything less than an average everyday RF with the ceiling of an elite, power hitting RF. Defensively, he has an above average arm and range perfectly equipped to handle Fenway's basin of a right field.

He might be the best positional prospect the RS have.

Beane likes the draft... Then why does he sign Type A free agents like its nothing?

The Red Sox could let Bay walk and then sign Matt Holliday, thereby losing a first rounder but gaining a first rounder and a sandwich pick.

So the Sox have leverage in this negotiation.

Another consideration is that Bay has chronic bad knees. Playing in Boston's cozy left field lessens the demands on his knees and the park fits his swing.

Given that, I'd say that both parties are motivated to reach a deal. A fair deal would be 3yrs and 12.5m per with a team option for a fourth year at the same 12.5m.

Both parties *might* be better off going in a different direction, but both parties are probably comfortable enough to get a good deal done.

I'd say this is probably more than what the Sox offered Bay after the Dunn 2yr/$20M and Burrell $2yr/$16M dollar deals signed in the offseason.

Obviously, he has played well enough to earn more than both these guys... and attendance hasn't been as bad as some feared.

That said, Bay has been a below average player since June 1st and is losing value every day.

Say what you want about JD Drew, but he's actually been more valuable to the team the last two years, thanks to his defense.

Bay will probably continue to regress defensively, and is not worth the 4yr/$60M or 5yr/$70M dollar numbers currently floating around.

DirtyWater -

I think your "fair" deal is right on the money if he signs tomorrow. Unfortunately, there are a number of big market teams looking for left fielders this offseason... including morons like Sabean.

Someone will roll out the red carpet for the guy if he wants to get paid.

5 years is more than Boston wants to go. But $10 million per year is less than Bay will be willing to sign for. Therefore, I would predict that the contract will end up falling somewhere in between; let's say 4 years, $50 million, or 3 plus an option for around $13 - $14 per.

4 years/65 million for bay

Ill take bay. who says they wont shell out more money and sign holliday and make him or drew the dh. lets not just hand holliday to the yanks just yet. There gunna be going after him like the Cards, Braves, Mets to list a few. I think the redsox need to get Bay now before he hits the market and the lose him to one of the three teams i mentioned.

If Bay waits untill the end of the season to test the free agent waters (which his agent should be telling him to do) and the Yankees want him he'll probably end up there as whatever deal the Yankees offer him (5 years $75 - $100 million) will be too high for the Red Sox who do not overpay to keep or get anyone. The Sox will grudgingly complain again about the 'evil empire' and will sign Holliday for a lot less (3 years $30-$50 million) and Holliday will thrive with the green monster and it will revive his career like it did for Lowell and Ortiz and end up being the better value.

yanks09 - I do not think the A's will get draft picks for Holliday. To do so Oakland will have to offer him arbitration. If he accepts the arbitration he will end up with more money than he is worth in this economy. I think the A's have to trade him if they can to get any sort of value for him, unless they are willing to keep him for another year and overpay him and hope the economy comes back around and do the same thing again next year.
