Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Indians GM Mark Shapiro would not specifically discuss possible trades involving Cliff Lee or Victor Martinez. Instead, Shapiro repeated that the Indians seek pitching in any deals, particularly young, controllable pitchers who are close-to-major-league-ready.

This has Red Sox written all over it, with a surplus of talented young pitching prospects.

Second.
As in I second that the Red Sox have to have their fingerprints all over this... I'm not proclaiming my comment to be the 2nd one posted.

"The Rangers have a number of talented young pitchers, but don't expect them to dangle Neftali Feliz or Derek Holland to make a play for Lee."
The Indians have no reason to trade Lee to the Rangers unless they're getting one of Feliz or Holland though.

Why the hell would boston wanna trade for another pitcher they already have 6 starters. I would rather see Feliz and Holland stay with the rangers than trade them for Lee. Lee overachieved in 2008 and is not worth any or our top prospects.

I cant see why the Braves arent in on V Mart....how about Kris Medlin and Kotchman for Martinez?
Posted by: sconia25 | July 06, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Rangerfan, you might want to read the entire article.
Victor Martinez, a guy who's already been rumored with the Sox, could be a DH/1B guy of the future beyond Ortiz, with the capability to play catcher in a pinch.
He's not the catcher of the future, and isn't their defensive answer at first, but he's a bat that could replace Ortiz, while being a valuable *emergency* catcher.

A 31 year old isn't the anything of the future, Boh. V-Mart, especially a 31 year old who's spent the bulk of his career catching.
As much as I'd enjoy V-Mart's bat, he's not worth dropping high level prospects from a Red Sox perspective unless he's capable of sticking at catcher, which he allegedly is not for all that much longer. He might be a nice band aid, but Ortiz seems to be coming around of late and Lowell's coming back shortly. We'll also have Lars Anderson ready in a couple years, so it doesn't work in the short or long term. Martinez is great, but not a smart move for the Sox. He'd be too pricey and wouldn't make enough of a difference in the team to make that worthwhile.

If the Red Sox trade Buccholz or Masterson just to get Lee, that would not be smart, IMO.
They already have a loaded rotation and Buccholz and Masterson are very good pitching prospects.
Don't really see that big of a need for Lee, especially if Smoltz can rebound into form.

I think if the Red Sox got involved, they would have him play 1B the majority of the time while spelling Tek on occasion. But I agree, there's a reason he's moved to 1B in Cleveland: he's not a very good catcher. That said, he's an outstanding, patient switch-hitter, which is exactly what Theo covets. He's also relatively cheap, given his production. Long term, if they trade for him and the Sox work out an extension, I see him taking over Papi as the DH in 2011 with Lars coming in as the full time 1B.
But Shapiro wants young pitching, and you know it's going to be hard to sell the fanbase on anything coming back that's not named Clay Buchholz. And I think that's too much to pay given the starting pitching question marks going into next season.

"I cant see why the Braves arent in on V Mart....how about Kris Medlin and Kotchman for Martinez?"
Maybe it's because that offer wouldn't come close to landing him.
First basemen with a career OBP of .336 and a career ISO of .139, along with current 2009 numbers that fall right in line with those numbers, aren't terribly valuable.
Medlin is a good prospect, but the Indians have already stated that it would take an overwhelming package to land Martinez, while this offer is just a fraction of his actual value.
And Kotchman has nowhere to go with Shoppach and Garko already on the ML roster, as well as potential future stars in LaPorta and Santana in the upper minors.
The teams just don't fit up that well.
"The Indians have no reason to trade Lee to the Rangers unless they're getting one of Feliz or Holland though."
Let's say that the Rangers keep those two off-limits, but use their other guys to make this package:
Smoak, Main, Font, Hunter and Boscan for Lee and Beau Mills? Which side blinks?

BOH-
I did read the whole article. You really wanna trade for Victor Martinez...i believe Chris Davis could be had for a very reasonable price. Boston has never had a big basher playing for them at first and if they had one it would put them over the top.

Justin Smoak will not be traded to any team. He will be in the Rangers lineup before the end of the august maybe july. Hopefully he is not a total jerkoff like Teixiera

Teixeira turned down Texas's 8/140 offer because he thought that he could get more on the open market. Then, on the open market, he got 8/180 from New York. Even if he's a jerkoff, which I doubt, then at least he got another $40M out of it, and he's far more likely to win a WS ring there, too. (no offense, but it's true)

If there's any team that hates the Red Sox more than the Yanks it would probably be the Indians. If Buccholz is not being offered then I doubt the Indians would do a deal with Boston even though they don't play in the same division. I think the Giants would make the most sense.
Vmart for something centered around Anderson OR Bumgarner?

scribble..yea your right that def wouldnt get it done, i prolly shoulda been more specific. the braves need a bat like about as bad as anyone, and with the insane amount of young talent they have kicking around, theres no reason they cant get something done. Id rather have Dunn, but we are getting desperate here! The braves could easily assemble a package starting with Medlin and throw in some combo of: kelly johnson, Frenchy, Kotchman, schafer, escobar, mike gonzalez, jo jo reyes, barbaro canazaries.
Im not ready to mortgage the future, be ATL is in position to steal a very weak NL East, and with their pitching, could easily do a lot of damage in sept/oct

sconis25-
If the Braves are willing to discuss KJ, Escobar and Schafer in deals for Martinez, then I'm sure that the Indians will show far more interest than they ever would in Kotchman.
Kotchman is the last type of player that the Indians would persue, given the personnel in their organization.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 06, 2009 at 01:17 PM
i cant say as though id blame anyone for not looking at koch, frenchy or KJ. honestly, frenchy or kj would make just about any team in baseball worse by having them

I am an indians Fan, and if they trade either of those 2 I will be pretty mad. How do they expect to win in the next few years when they Trade their best players? The Tribe needs a new GM and Manager.

You really want to move Shapiro?
The guy who traded Casey Blake and Mark DeRosa for Carlos Santana, Chris Perez, Jonathan Meloan and a PTBNL?
Shapiro just needs to get his long term pitching staff figured out, because this team is going to stacked with position player talent.
Wedge is a bigger problem than Shapiro.
Although, Shapiro, please, just put Alex White in the rotation. I know that they haven't put him in the bullpen permanantly, but that guy needs to get in work developing his offspeed stuff, and I question how much that happens while he's relieving.

Why in the Hell would the Indians be interested in Kotchman when we have LaPorta ready a AAA.
PLus Medlin yes but you arn't even in the ballpart to get a deal done.
Posted by: baseballnuts | July 06, 2009 at 05:21 PM
Any trade involving Victor and Lee have to include at least 1 Front of the Rotation type major league starter coming back in each deal.
If not then they could move thenm in 2010 during the trading deadline for positon prospects like they did with CC.
