The baseball realm is a-twitter with the news that the Blue Jays will listen to offers on Roy Halladay. Let's run down the latest bullet points on this front:
- MLB.com's Jordan Bastian has a bevy of quotes from Roy himself: "It's a situation where I think if it's best for the team, if it's best for me, then you go from there."
- SI's Jon Heyman hears that the Jays may want a top SS prospect for the Doc, which could bode well for the Phillies, White Sox and Brewers, who all harbor chips in Jason Donald, Gordon Beckham and Alcides Escobar, respectively.
- Scott Gregor at the Daily Herald doesn't believe a deal with the White Sox for Halladay to be a likely scenario.
- Scott Lauber of the News-Journal says the Blue Jays already have a scout at the Phillies game tonight.
- Bill Shaikin at the L.A. Times asks Dodgers fans what their package deal for the Doc would be.
- Ken Davidoff at Newsday says it'd be "irresponsible" for the Mets and Yankees to not inquire on Halladay. Davidoff talked to Ricciardi, who insinuates that he wants a bigger package than what the Braves gave for Mark Teixeira a couple years ago.
- Tony Massarotti at the Boston Globe wonders just how unlikely an intra-divisional trade would be, and according to J.P. Ricciardi via WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, he apparently wouldn't hesitate to deal to an AL East competitor.
Eddie, you must mean that Ricciardi insinuates he wants a bigger package than what the RANGERS received for Mark Teixeira

I honestly wouldn't trade Beckham for Halladay straight up.
Posted by: ChiSoxKilla23 | July 07, 2009 at 06:22 PM
or perhaps, they meant what the Braves got from the Angels last year

Ben, I would hope Ricciardi wants more than a Kotchman/Marek type deal for Halladay...keep in mind the end of that sentence says "several years ago"
Posted by: Boswa73 | July 07, 2009 at 06:29 PM
or "a couple years ago", as I should have said
Posted by: Boswa73 | July 07, 2009 at 06:29 PM
Good catch Boswa, thanks.

How bout a 3 team trade with a stud outfielder coming to Atlanta and Escobar going to Toronto ?
Posted by: tsweet9000 | July 07, 2009 at 06:38 PM
I don't think Jason Donald is the Jays answer at SS. Maybe for a lower caliber player than Doc, but if I were to deal him it would be for Beckham or Escobar.

I think he meant what the Braves sent to Texas. He says that "he wants a bigger package than what the Braves GAVE for Mark Teixeira a couple years ago". "Braves GAVE.." being the ket phrase. That would be hard to imagine though. The Braves gave their Top 3 rated prospects plus Feliz and Jones.

The Braves system wasn't all that strong at the time of trade though, with no players ranked as top 30 prospects and only 2 in the top 90. The deal looks much stronger in retrospect because Feliz went from being a lotto ticket with a huge fastball to a legitimate top 10-20 prospect. I imagine that Ricciardi is implying he'd want a more elite guy heading the package with a similar package the rest of the way down.

I think the white sox could get halladay without giving up beckham. I'm 99 percent sure kw wouldn't trade beckham anyays

Any deal associated with the Yanks would require 1 of Hughes and Joba plus Montero plus at least 2 other B caliber guys (Jackson, McAllister, Romine, Melancon). I just can't see the Yanks doing that PLUS having to extend him on a 5 year deal. For once the Yanks have a good balance of a competitve mlb team AND a good crop of top prospects like Jackson, Montero, ROmine and Melancon to replace some of the outgoing vets (Damon, Rivera, Pettie and Posada). With the Yanks being where they are and a current staff of CC, AJ, Pettite, Joba and Hughes it just seems like too much to give up. And as good as Halladay is, can you expect him to be as good 2 or 3 years from now? I don't think the Yanks should saddle themselves with two guys (AJ and Halladay) who would be earning $15 mil + in their mid 30's.

Everyone has to agree that Alcedis Escobar, Mat Gamel and Angel Salmone for Roy Halladay and Scott Rolen gets it done!!!!!!!
Posted by: Lidocaine | July 07, 2009 at 07:09 PM
The Blue Jays would probably want throw in or two, but those 3 would make for a very good framework to build around.
Posted by: nixa37 | July 07, 2009 at 07:23 PM
Lidocaine,
Those 3 would get any done without a doubt...but I would think they would get a bit more return then Halladay and Rolen...Halladay is a good start but IDK about Rolen...also...Melvin said that both Escobar and Gamel are off limits...but I'm guessing he would trade them...hes just saying untouchable to drive up their worth

As a Sox fan I'd prefer for us to stay away from this guy. If the White Sox were to aquire him it would most likely mean us giving up Gordon Beckham, which i am looking forward to Beckham being apart of our future.
Posted by: Black and White | July 07, 2009 at 07:45 PM
If they want a SS of the future, given that Beckham and Escobar(both) probably wont be traded, DeJesus Jr. could be a very nice piece. A deal with him, Lambo, McDonald, and Elbert(our #1, 2, 3, and 4 prospects)

Toronto's scout is probably looking at J.A. Happ, who started tonight for the Phils.
Posted by: ColonelTom | July 07, 2009 at 08:57 PM
White Sox fans....
Beckham's ceiling is a solid to above average major leaguer ... he is not a superstar and won't be playing SS in 5 years from now...
Anyways... I think in one of the articles listed above .. Danks, Poreda and Beckham is the asking price.
Too many teams fall in love with their prospects.. This happens all the time in every sport. GMs love their own guys etc...
Posted by: cortez101 | July 07, 2009 at 09:01 PM
you White SOx fans need your heads examined.. you wouldnt give up Beckham for Halladay straight up? that is the most ridiculous thing ive ever read on here which is saying something..
Sure Beckham is promising, but he is 100% potential right now and were talking about a top 3 starter in all of baseball.. Adding Halladay wins you the garbage central easily and gives you a legit shot in the playoffs..
it boggles my mind how much everyone overvalues prospects these days.. Go take a look at BA's top 100 list over the years and you'll see just how few of these "cant miss studs" become role players or fizzle out entirely
Posted by: Adam | July 07, 2009 at 09:04 PM
the Blue Jays already have a scout at the Phillies game tonight.
Scouting Happ?? He pitched a complete game shutout against them.
wondering who else on the ML club they'd want for Halladay?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 07, 2009 at 09:07 PM
Totally agree with Adam...
Posted by: cortez101 | July 07, 2009 at 09:07 PM
Halladay would be a huge pick up for the Phils.. I think they have the guys if theyre willing to package Happ with 2 or 3 solid prospects (Donald, Brown, Carrasco, Marson as examples). From what i have read though they are at a maximum payroll..
Gotta like them to come out of the NL if they can get him though.
The Dodgers are another team who could really use a top of the rotation guy, but they have moved so many good young players into their MLB team that their farm system has taken a hit. I doubt they would want to move youngsters from their current roster (Kershaw, Kemp, Ethier etc.)
I think it definetly takes one of these guys to get it done. The package listed above just doenst have a standout prospect.
Could they afford to move Ethier or Kemp and use Pierre?
Posted by: Adam | July 07, 2009 at 09:19 PM
oh and to the one on another halladay link said the phils have no worthy minor league prospects, BA disagrees and ranks Michael Taylor as one of if not the top OF in the minors right now.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-bulletin/2009/268482.html
oh and tonight all he did was go 3-4 with 2 doubles and 3 SB. All this while being 6'6 250. I'd do it, but I have a feeling we may regret including Taylor in the potential trade.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 07, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Hasn't Doug Melvin said Escobar is "untouchable"? Why does his name keep getting brought up?
Posted by: ConcreteSquatter | July 07, 2009 at 09:46 PM
lidocaine- and why would the brewers want rolen again??
Posted by: brewers19101 | July 07, 2009 at 10:06 PM
I think the mets need to be in serious talks with toronto. They need to make serious changes. I think this where David wright comes in. Trade wright, Niese, Ruben Tejada and another b prospect for Halladay and alex rios. What do you think? Not enough, too much? I know minaya doesnt want to give away the little prospects we have left but this opportunity doesnt come around often?
Posted by: shaddix | July 07, 2009 at 10:20 PM
If Toronto wants Bills or Kershaw plus a Kemp or Ethier, he is not coming to LA.
Those arent prospects those are young players on the best team in NL..
Those packages are way too much.
Shaddix,
David Wright is the best third baseman in the NL.
Hes not going anywhere.
