SI.com's Jon Heyman identifies the GMs facing the most pressure heading into the second half of the season and passes along some rumors, too:
- Despite "occasional rumblings" about Omar Minaya's job security, injuries are to blame for the Mets' disappointing start, so Minaya's bosses aren't about to blame him for the season.
- The Nats plan on hiring a permanent GM soon and acting GM Mike Rizzo is in the running for the position.
- Giants GM Brian Sabean saved one of his best showings for his walk year. He's put together a playoff contender and a talented crop of minor leaguers just as his deal's about to expire.
- Royals GM Dayton Moore and Braves GM Frank Wren are expected to have some time to work with.
- It doesn't look like Indians GM Mark Shapiro will ascend to club president this year.
- Heyman likes the Phillies' acquisition of Pedro Martinez.
- Mark Mulder could be the next pitcher to sign, as he's 95% ready, according to his agent.
- Heyman thinks the Red Sox will be able to lock Jason Bay up once they start talking extension.
- Look for the Reds to continue their hunt for outfielders.
if Bay signs short of 5/70, he really does love it here...

Injuries and the inevitable train wreck that was the Oliver Perez signing.
Who didn't see that coming? Minaya passing on Wolf in favor of Perez was a terrible move.

How about Ankiel to the Reds for Arroyo?
Posted by: RoyHobbs | July 15, 2009 at 01:04 PM
Nevermind I'd didn't realize Arroyo was getting 11 mill this year, jesus.

Heyman's great, but I can't believe he thinks Frank Wren's under any pressure right now. He rebuilt the rotation this past winter, and the McLouth and Church deals look like genius (or should). Besides, picking Hanson over Glavine was absolutely a no-brainer.

minaya is certainly not to blame for the
as for people who knock the perez deal. yes, it was a bit too large of a contract but the guy is only 27 years old and is left-handed. his long-term value is a lot higher than wolf or lowe.
lowe was the guy fans were screaming for, yet he sits at the break with close to a 5 era. wolf? are you kidding me? perez has half as many wins in 1/3 as many starts and perez has been horrible this year. what does that say about wolf. he's a steady pitcher for sure but he's also gone past 6 innings only 3 times this season. not good.
if we are gonna knock minaya for anything - its the signings of redding and livan who are just painful to watch. hopefully maine and perez get their stuff together and rebound with a decent second half to quiet the critics. it's not like we passed on halladay or something. sheesh.
get back to me in 2011 and let me know if lowe or wolf are relevant in the mlb anymore and you will get my respect. (remember, these guys wanted multi-year deals).

"Royals GM Dayton Moore and Braves GM Frank Wren are expected to have some time to work with."
Dayton Moore should be fired immediately. I see no reason for him to keep his job. He has repeatedly shown that he has no awareness of OBP or defense. Or advanced pitching metrics. Jacobs? Farnsworth? Horacio Ramirez? Betancourt? Bloomquist? All between last offseason and the July 31 trade deadline?

Wren sort of rebuilt the rotation.
He gave an awful lot of money to Kawakami and Lowe who have been very average.
He basically maxed out his payroll to field a very average team.

LOL thats funny i would take perez over wolf anyday. perez did decent the last 2 years with the mets with a 4.22 era and a 3.56 era while striking out 354 in 371 innings. And besides wolf has pitched more than 150 innings once in the last 6 years.

Omar should have not have signed Lowe, Perez, or Wolf.
But he had a stacked lineup and could not predict the injuries would pile up as they did.. so he also had to "show he was trying to win".

Ollie Perez was, has been, and always will be an utter head case. It's a shame too, he has a world of talent. You have to hope that as he approaches thirty, he can start to harness some of his potential and give himself a consistent shot at winning each time out. His K/BB ratio is dreadful.

I agree with ink-stained scribe, Wren hasn't made a really horrible move yet. Dave O' Brien has as much to do with the anger of Braves fans as he does. Dave reported Peavy, Burnett, Furcal, and Griffy Jr. were all Braves which is what really started the Wren hating. Granted he let Smoltz and Glavine go and albeit it tugs at your heart it was the right baseball decision. Not getting Peavy turned out to be fine, look at what Hanson and Escobar are doing. Burnett's wife is the reason Lowe ended up being a Brave. He wanted A.J., but his wife has a fear of flying and Lowe was his last resort, sure there were the Greinke trade stuff, but lets not open up any more old wounds. He has done the best he can with one of the worst ownerships in the league.

Wren has been great, he hasn't been a loser in a trade yet. His free agent signings haven't been great but Lowe and Kawakami have been solid

He lists twelve GMs on the hot seat, but pretty much says all twelve will not be fired. What was the point of that piece?

Sabean really shouldn't get credit for all of the team's minor league talent and recent draft success. John Barr and the scouting dept deserve the credit.

DOB didn't break the Furcal story, though he did confirm it after talking to Braves FO personal who told him the same thing. He wasn't the one who said Peavy to the Braves was a done deal, that was some random guy on Yahoo I believe. I don't remember anyone saying anything more than the Braves being in the lead for Burnett at some point. On Griffey, all DOB said was that he had indicated to friends that he had chosen the Braves, and everything we've heard since points to that being the case until he was talked into the fact that he should go back to Seattle for the fans.

Totally agree.
Even with the excellent drafting that this team has done recently, they have absolutely failed to compile talent at the ML level.
This team has some talent at the ML level with Greinke, Meche, Hochevar, Soria, Gordon, Butler, Callaspo, Teahen and DeJesus, but they desperately need some impact players, and right now all of those hopes are pinned on Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy, Mike Montgomery, Aaron Crow and Tim Melville.

Did you see the article we were linked to the other day which stated he will openly admit to having just two statisticians, but doesnt completely understand what all the numbers are about? I was actually shocked. I thought Hendry was the only such GM
lol!

From Heyman's article:
"My tweeting highlight of the week (year?) was this comment from noted baseball aficionado @Alyssa_Milano in response to me introducing myself to her at the All-Star Game and complimenting her tweets"
Heyman compimented Alyssa Milano on her tweets? That dirty, dirty man.

Who hired them ?

The Reds aren't shopping for anything unless it's a prospect.
Posted by: Kinsm | July 15, 2009 at 05:21 PM
Bay will ink a 3yr deal at 12.5m per, with a team option for a fourth year at 12.5m.
The Drew deal was done in a different economic environment, and probably also as a side deal worked with Boras as part of the larger Daisuke deal. (The 50m to the Japanese team didn't count against the cap, and isn't subject to the luxury tax.) Boras delivered Daisuke. And Drew. Most people didn't think Drew was worth 5/70. He was - and is - too soft (which hurts marketing) and too injury prone (which hurts his production). The Drew deal was an aberration.
Bay has chronic, bad knees. He'll be happy to hit in the middle of Boston's lineup, take aim at the Green Monster (which suits his swing), and roam the cozy LF.
If not, Holliday will be.
Posted by: DirtyWaterBeatdown | July 15, 2009 at 06:05 PM
BAy would probably want to stay in Boston, or go to LA and hit some bombs. It would be Kemp, Bay and Ethier. How about that.

He is right that its not omar minayas fault but if you think about it, it actually kind of is. The only reoson I say that is because he has not made a move yet. I meen ya he talked to five or six gm's but how about a trade, show us what you can do Omar.
What about Matt Holliday
for Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans
Omir Santos, and Tim Reading.
Think about it Met fans, the mets dont really nead murphy and he is natrally a 3rd baseman and chaves is done for the rest of the seoson. Nick evans we dont even use, the A's need a backup catcher and the mets can bring up that kid they have in AA, and the mets dont even use Tim Reading as a starter and they already have like 8 pitchers in the penn so I think it works out perfectly.
Posted by: metsfan | July 16, 2009 at 09:52 PM
as much as i would like to see that happen, the A's would never do that. they can get so much more from other teams than 2 young guys, a back up catcher, and a bad pitcher. anywyas the mets shouldnt even trade evans, f mart, ike davis, Jenrry Mejia, or Wilmer Flores. keep these guys for the future. obviously signing or trading for veterans isnt working and we have to build from our farm system. Dont get me wrong, beltran, johan, and krod are great pieces to a winning team, and giving up draft picks, propects, and money was worth it, but thats pretty much it. arguably 2 of our best players have been with the mets their whole career and i think some of these prospects of the ability to be superstars. DO NOT TRADE THEM OMAR
