« Cubs Sign B.J. Ryan | Main | Red Sox "Desperately" Want To Move Lugo »
Now that Jay Bruce is on the DL, the Reds need a hitter more than ever and GM Walt Jocketty is searching for one, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Jocketty said the Reds won't necessarily get the bat they're looking for, but he says he's "looking for a hitter" anyways.

Luke Scott. It's gotta be luke Scott. There's only two names that work here. Likes under team control and has power. Those are the two musts. Add the cheap salary and works. Young hitting for young pitching - malony or Thompson plus somewhere between a medium plus talent like rioenick. He might be a little high. Or a medium low like juan francisco would be perfect.
The only other name that works is alex rios. It would have to be the same as always talked about. Rios for arroyo to match salary plus a mid-level pitching prospect like Thompson.

Wait. So, the Reds have the improvements, who have been sitting in AAA and performing in AAA. So they could improve their team like, right now, without giving up any prospects. Jocketty fail?
Go with an OF of Nix-Stubbs-Gomes with Dickerson as 4th OF. Play the hot hand. If someone goes cold, call up Heisey.
Although methinks the Reds' 3B/SS prospect depth is pretty.

Not that I'm a Reds fan, but I hope they realize that they're not going anywhere this year and don't make a stupid move. Give Heisey or Stubbs a chance! (preferably Heisey, I'm proud to say a former teammate of mine!) Tavares is brutal and I don't know what his contract looks like, but hopefully they have spots cleared for Stubbs/Heisey/obviously Bruce/Dickerson next year. How long do Reds fans think Nix and Gomes will be around?

If they do decide to make a trade, no way its Luke Scott. One, he's a lefty, and two, he has a total of 69 career HR's. 18 of them coming this year. That stat alone tells you a lot about what type of player he is and that he's just merely having one of those "career" type years. So Scott is def. not that "big bat" the Reds are looking for.
Rios would be nice but I cant see the Reds taking on his contract of around $60MM until 2015. Even if they did agree to take Arroyo as part of deal which I have no clue why any team would.
After looking at all the apparent outfielders on the trade block I personally like Cody Ross. 28, right-handed, signed through 2011 with a reasonable contract. 14 HR's, 52 RBI's and can play CF once Bruce returns whether thats later this season or next season. Sounds like a good fit to me. Now whether the Marlins actually choose to trade him is unknown since they too are still in it.
Unfortunately, I don't see anything happening since this issue was supposed to be addressed in the winter and wasn't.

there is no way Toronto will take Arroyo since he gave up 20 runs in the last two starts against the Jays. . IMO the Reds would have to center a deal around Harang

I don't know which mystical beast of a hitter Jocketty has in mind, but he's been feeding the media and the fans that same line since last offseason. It would be nice to see something actually happen.

Dickerson should be in CF for now and Gomes in LF. Nix is a nice PH, but not an everyday player. Taveras is brutal to watch and quite possibly the worst offensive player in the game.
They need to ship Edwin and get a power bat for a corner infielder.
If the Reds are willing to take on payroll as Jocketty keeps saying, then they shouldn't have a problem acquiring someone like Matt Holliday or Alex Rios. Trade Arroyo and Edwin to Toronto for Alex Rios or Scott Rolen. Either would work really.

The Tribe are most likely looking to trade Peralta and Garko, if they want to keep it cheap. Peralta would look a lot better at third base than Encarnacion, and Garko would be a good bat, though either he or Votto would have to man an outfield corner.

Last Fall, Jocketty said the number one priority was to get a power hitter to play Left Field.
Last Fall, Ca$htellini said teh imploding economy would NOT affect what the Reds were going to do.
What did they do? They WASTED money on Willy Taveras, Jerry Hairston Jr., Laynce Nix, Jonny Gomes, Jacque Jones and Daryl Ward (all of whom COMBINED did NOT produce as much as Bobby Abreu did last year) and look where they are at NOW. They STILL are looking for that "power bat" and have NO money to spend for it.
Typical Reds, WASTE money on trash heap, retread players and then HYPE the heck out of them like they are diamonds found in a porta potty.

They should give Jimmy Edmonds a ring.

In fact, having watched part of last night's picthing display, how about Homer Bailey and a PTBN of a mid-tier pitching prospect, for both Garko and Peralta?
Posted by: dan | July 17, 2009 at 08:59 AM
How about Garko, Peralta and Sowers.
for
Travis Wood pitcher at AA , Juan Francisco 3rd baseman at AA and Cody Puckett 2nd baseman at low A.
The Indians may have a slight interest in Homer but they are currently working on their own project in Carmona right now.

I like Travis Wood, but I'd rather sub in another pitcher for the other two. What happened to Kyle Lotzkar? I saw him play out at Dayton a few times last season, and I recall he had some hype, but now I can't find him. Is he hurt?
My thought process with Bailey was that it might be a good idea to have Carmona and Bailey both pushing each other at the AAA level. Plus, people tend to forget that Homer is only 23...he has plenty of time to get straightened out, maybe even spend a season working out of the 'pen.

Rios might be a little too steep for the Reds to try to make a move for him
Willingham might be a good idea. Low salary. A steady offensive threat during his career. Right handed. The Natonals probably wouldn't want too much to deal him, judging that they're so bad.
How about this? Trade Harang, Encarnacion, a major/minor league reliever(Burton), and maybe another prospect to the Indians for Cliff Lee and Jhonny Peralta? Just a thought.
