Lots of prospects are signing as we kick off the international signing period and we'll keep track of today's deals right here:
- In the biggest deal so far, the Cards inked Wagner Mateo for $3.1MM.
- The Mets signed Juan Urbina for a bonus worth more than $1MM.
- The Brewers signed outfielder Jose Pena to a six-figure deal, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America.
- The Astros signed shortstop Jonathan Mejia for about $370k, according to Badler.
- As mentioned in another post, the Yankees added pitcher Chris Cabrera for $400k, shortstop Damian Arredondo for $850k and catcher Gary Sanchez for about $3MM.
- Badler reports that the A's signed Wilfredo Solano, who will probably move to third.
- MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports that the A's also signed Wilman Martinez, an infielder, and Alfred Sosa, an outfielder.
- The Pirates signed a trio of Taiwanese prospects, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Ping-Hung Chi, Sheng-Cin Hong and Chih-Wei Hsu.
- Badler reports that the Blue Jays signed 16-year-old catcher Santiago Nessy.
- Kovacevic has another one: The Royals have reportedly inked Nicaraguan third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert for a bonus "in the range" of $1.5MM.
- According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants have signed Marvin Barrios, a 17-year-old from Panama, to a six-figure bonus.
- As expected, the Rangers appear to have signed Jurickson Profar, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.
What a steal by the Yankees - Sanchez is a combination of Mauer, Posada, Babe Ruth, and Vlad Guerrero all wrapped into one... only with more power and he can go zero to 60 in 1.2 seconds.
I keed, I keed. Or do I?

why is it the cubs never seem to be mentioned with big time prospects?

My mistake revive85,
Cuthbert seems to have one of those agreements in place with KC prior to 7/2 IFA signing period and the figure is supposed to be 1.5M. Nothing is official.
My apologies for giving you false data. Am watching the top signees myself..

"why is it the cubs never seem to be mentioned with big time prospects?"
I feel the same way. I don't know why that team doesn't spend big on the draft and amateur prospects, because their lack of doing so has definitely been reflected in the quality of their farm system.
They've signed Starlin Castro, Hak-Ju Lee and Dae-Eun Rhee, but overall this team should be going after guys like Mateo, Sanchez, Cabrera, Sano, Cuthbert, and others, but they're not.

Cubs are favorites for LHP Kirby Pena from DR in 750K range.

"The Mets signed Juan Uribe..."
This should be Juan Urbina not Uribe.

I really hope my O's make a splash in the international market (Sano anyone? Actually I want Sano and +++), but I find the whole frenzy over July 2 to be kind of absurd. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge day for teams to add talent, but these kids really don't 'matter' as prospects for AT LEAST another year and right now, it just sounds like a rush of 'Latin' names that eventually start to run together.
