« Heath Bell Rumors: Friday | Main | Rockies Acquire Joe Beimel »
3:00pm: A 180 in this rumor - FOX now says the Marlins acquired Johnson for Double A lefty Aaron Thompson, with the Nats paying Johnson's remaining salary.
2:37pm: Rosenthal and Morosi report that the Marlins are no longer pursuing Johnson or Heath Bell.
2:15pm: Via Twitter, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says the Marlins are not expected to complete any trades by the deadline, which is in 45 minutes.
11:29am: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Marlins increased their offer for Johnson by adding another minor leaguer along with Tucker.
11:07am: ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins "appear to be moving closer" to a Nick Johnson trade. Last we heard, the Fish offered pitcher Ryan Tucker to the Nationals and asked Washington to pay part of Johnson's contract (he has $2MM remaining). At the same time, Danny Knobler of CBSSports says the Marlins are growing frustrated with the trade talks and may move on.
Johnson, a free agent after the season, currently projects to fall short of Type B status, so it makes sense for the Nats to take what they can get. At the same time it'd be big for the Marlins to put a .408 OBP player in front of Hanley Ramirez.

Again, why are teams so intent on trading anything of value for Johnson? Ryan Tucker is too much. The kid throws a 96mph fast ball and Johnson eats cheese burgers on the DL for half the season.

evn with johnson the marlins got no chance to beat out the phils for the division

Great deal if Florida can pull it off. I'm still not sold on Tucker being anything but a bullpen arm and a guy like Johnson certainly could help Florida make a run for the WC.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | July 31, 2009 at 11:15 AM
We need this so bad right now. We need someone that gets on base and emilio is definatly not doing that, nick has a great ops and he will solidify the line-up. I guarentee he wont strike out with the the game on the line and one out like emilio did last night
Posted by: Daniel Martinez | July 31, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Easily the best part of adding Johnson:
NO MORE BONIFACIO!!!! YAY!!!
Any Marlin fan should be absolutely ecstatic to get that loser out of the lineup.
Bonifacio's month by month lines:
April: .269/.306/.344
May: .235/.279/.277
June: .250/.314/.293
July: .242/.276/.323
Total: .248/.293/.308
And he's a below average defensive third baseman.
Bonifacio has been giving Yuni a run for worst everyday player in the game.
I've never seen an organization be so blinding by the first week of the season. If he had a big week in mid-May and absolutely blew before and after it, then he would've been benched by now. But he blew up for like eight games, mostly against the Nats, and had a bunch of articles written about how electric he was, even though he's really not remotely good.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 31, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Hopefully Cantu can get readjusted to 3B quickly and hopefully it does not affect his offense.
Posted by: FiSHFaN1088 | July 31, 2009 at 11:18 AM
I'm not sold on this trade, as last year they were saying Tucker is a future closer, though they had him starting again this year. I think the Natinals have to eat a lot of the salary for it to make sense.

go cubs go -
Uh, ever hear of the Wild Card?
This would be an outstanding move for the Marlins. A .408 OBP guy in front of Hanley is just pure gold.
Posted by: m26555 | July 31, 2009 at 11:19 AM
As long as the Marlins dont re-sign him in the off season because they might as well just send the cheques to his house since thats where he'll be for most of the season laying on his couch eating hot wings and being not-slim.
Posted by: xethicx | July 31, 2009 at 11:21 AM
B.K.- I really can't see him as a successful closer. He got his feelings hurt when the Marlins put him in the bullpen, and he just seems rattled with anyone on base. He has a great arm, but one pitch won't bring success unless your name is Mariano Rivera
Posted by: FiSHFaN1088 | July 31, 2009 at 11:22 AM
How funny or sad would it be if the Marlins sent Bonifacio back to the Nats in a trade?
Posted by: bigpat | July 31, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Leo Nunez is just a year older than Tucker and is already the team's closer. Nunez is much better suited than Tucker as this team's closer as he has better stuff and has the same velocity.
Besides Tucker has been struggling in the minors and his value has gone done now that he will probably be converted into a bullpen arm rather than a closer.
Posted by: CaneFlash | July 31, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Meant to say rather than a starter, not closer.
Posted by: CaneFlash | July 31, 2009 at 11:25 AM
I wonder who the other prospect is? Maybe Thompson or Cousins? Possibly Raynor?
Posted by: m26555 | July 31, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Don't waste a good prospect like Tucker on Johnson Fish. Let the Nat's keep him and get zilcho for him after the season, serves them right for thinking he is worth a good prospect.
Wait a couple of hours more to see if Boston gets either Gonzalez, or martinez, then they will probably trade off LaRoche AND pay his salary for little to nothing, who is at least as good as Johnson and will be in the field and not on the DL the rest of the year. Just have some patience.

Surely you ment Yunesky Betancourt and not Yunel Escobar. escobar is hitting over .300 with 11 HR and 50 sum RBI.

Raynor would probably make sense, seems to be the type of player the new management in D.C. is after.

LaRoche as good as Johnson? You're joking, right?
Posted by: m26555 | July 31, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Some one will give Johnson big dollars in the off season and then he will claim the title of the league's next Hank Blalock.

Whats a wild card? is that something to do with UFC?
Posted by: xethicx | July 31, 2009 at 11:44 AM
i said we should get nick johnson a month ago, this has to happen if we wanna make a run at the wild card
Posted by: deeznuts04 | July 31, 2009 at 11:52 AM
Yes! Pull the trigger on this trade!
There is no way we are going to win with Bonifacio in the lineup. Simply no way. I'm pretty sure I would have a better OBP then he would if I played for the Marlins.
Our lineup would be looking pretty sweet after we do this deal. Next we should try to get Paul Maholm or Zach Duke from the Pirates though the Pirates might be asking too high. They said they don't want to trade those guys unless they get a great deal. That would probably mean a top tier prospect.
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 12:09 PM
This is a SOLID trade for the Marlins!!! what are they waiting for?? Bonifacio is a horrible player he needs 2 be replaced ASAP!!!! go for Johnson and we win the wild card for sure!!!!

SUPER SOLID!!!!

actually our lineup would be extremely SOLID if we can trade Jeremy Hermida for a better hitter dont u think???? i mean he strikes out way too much wats up w dat? Ross Gload would be a better fit if they get rid of Hermida!!!!! I LOVE GLOAD i trust him way more than Hermida to get a hit! either Gload or someone else! Maybe Adam Dunn?
Posted by: goofy22 | July 31, 2009 at 12:17 PM
We aren't getting Adam Dunn without a huge prospect or two getting sent back to Washington.
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 12:19 PM
well if thats not the case put in Ross Gload instead of hermida bench him for striking out so much!!!!
Posted by: goofy22 | July 31, 2009 at 12:34 PM
"LaRoche as good as Johnson? You're joking, right?"
Was serious and not just as good on offense (well, close on LaRoche's part) but Johnson is nowhere near the fielder he was and since you only get Johnson for 2 months, just how many games will he actually play before A: breaking his leg and ending up on the DL again, B: pulling a groin and ending up on the DL again C, D, E etc.. another DL trip to end the season....
Posted by: johns | July 31, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Not trying to nitpick, but it wasn't as if Nick's leg just snapped willy-nilly. He broke the femur in a horrific collision.

"Not trying to nitpick, but it wasn't as if Nick's leg just snapped willy-nilly. He broke the femur in a horrific collision."
I understand DC Nats Fan. Johnson IS a good hitter, he just simply cannot stay healthy, not one thing, just a multitude of bad luck that follows him injury wise. That is why hard to understand the Nat's FO asking so much for him on the health issue alone in his walk year and more so when there is -0- chance of compensation with him not qualifying even if arbitration was offered.
Just hard to believe. Nats could have gotten a good prospect from Boston for him, but tried to extort Delcarmen, now trying to get a good prospect in Tucker from the Fish for him. It's like Rizzo really has no clue what he wants for a player, but is choosing the by what team he is negotiating with instead and it is going to cost them any chance now of getting anything for him period AND paying him what salary he is owed, then just hope he at least does not get hurt and miss the rest of the season.
Posted by: johns | July 31, 2009 at 02:26 PM
Why would the Nats not do this? They need to realize the right price for Nick Johnson is ONE GOOD PROSPECT. Not 2. He has been injury prone his whole career with 2 months left in his contract. He can't net 2 good prospects.
This is making me so mad!
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
I don't know why the Nats don't just trade Nick Johnson unless they firmly believe they will re-sign him. He's still too much of an injury risk, they should have just taken a prospect or two and be done with it. He would of helped the Marlins out a lot too, shame they called it off for whatever reason.

Posted by: FLAMarlinsFan | July 31, 2009 at 03:05 PM
Yes! I knew they couldn't have that much of an asking price. And we got him for even cheaper then I thought. We get to keep Tucker!
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 03:07 PM
Good for both sides-Fish get a nice 1B, Nats get something for "nothing" essentially, since Nick wasn't gonna be a Type B. Fish fans-you're getting a great guy for the clubhouse too.

now how about Heath Bell huh?
THATS GONNA BE AMAZING IF MARLINS GET BELL TOO!!!
Posted by: goofy22 | July 31, 2009 at 03:13 PM
Saying no to the Nats with a half hour left was probably just to scare them. And I am judging it worked since they offered us Johnson for Thompson instead of Tucker.
We all knew the Nats wanted to trade Johnson and to get anything of remote value would be good for them. He won't even be a Type B FA, so it made no sense for them to keep him and not get anything in return.

He said "we" so I naturally assumed that meant he was on the team or in the front office.
Oh, wait I guess he's just a fan of the team, my bad, I guess the english language escapes me sometimes.
Posted by: xethicx | August 02, 2009 at 10:31 AM
Also, could the Marlins fans in here tell me why Johnson is apparently "the answer"?
The guy hit 6 homeruns in 98 games this year and while .295 is a good average I fail to see the numbers that make him the final piece of the puzzle.
Adam Laroche would have been a much better target than Johnson because at least Laroche is durable and can play defense.
Posted by: xethicx | August 04, 2009 at 05:34 AM
The man reason we think he is going to make the marlins alot better is because he gets on base. With him in the 2 hole instead of Bonifacio it gives hanley and cantu more oppurtunities with runners on base and should benefit Chris Coghlan having a patient hitter in front of him so he could steal bases.
Posted by: chris | August 04, 2009 at 03:30 PM
