« Miguel Angel Sano Rumors: Thursday | Main | Phillies Discussed Paul Byrd »
According to John C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have agreed to terms with Luis Ayala.
That didn't take long. Ayala was designated for assignment on June 23 and released this afternoon by the Twins. The 31-year-old right-hander allowed eight walks and 38 hits (including four home runs) in just over 32 innings with Minnesota. He'll spend a few outings at Triple-A New Orleans before joining the Fish.

That's great news!
That should accelerate the demise of the Marlins and make Dan Uggla available on the trade market before the deadline.

Well, he is a BP arm.. Not sure he is what the Fish need though.
Why not just call up VandenHurk and let him try tossing long relief? Are they afraid of hurting his arm that the WBC already did and they just got healthy again?
Too bad Boston and Fish can't work something out on Saito.

Since I really don't follow the Marlins, I can't say what other options may have been better.
But as a Twins fan, I can just offer the opinion that if Ayala is the answer... you're probably asking the wrong question. He was brutal.

he was OK as the mets fill-in closer last year - he was 9/11 in save chances.. throws strikes resulting in not many walks..

I can tell you right now that this is already a fail.
Maybe if the fish went out and tried to acquire Saito or any reliever worth his weight in prospects, then problem patched.

Jim Crikett-
Do you follow baseball...at all? The demise of the Marlins? Have you not realized they have gained nearly 10 games on the Phillies over the past couple of weeks? Give me a break.
Ayala is NOTHING BUT BULLPEN DEPTH. He will NOT play a huge role in what has been a VERY effective Marlins' bullpen outside of Matt Lindstrom.

As a matter of fact, Philadelphia is currently losing to Atlanta. If the Phils lose, the Marlins will be tied for first. Get your facts straight...honestly.

He was actually terrible.

Good luck Marlins with this guy. He's a Washington Nationals castoff and was awful for the Mets.
He may have saved 9 games for them but almost every outing was an adventure.
One of his blown saves came against the Braves. Mets up 4-2 in the 9th, Ayala promptly puts two runners on and gives a up a 3-run bomb to Greg Norton of all players...
Yikes!

As a 7th bullpen arm, this is a good signing for the fish. There is no risk in this deal. If he comes in and sucks, the fish designate him for assignment. This signing just buys the team some time until Kiko Calero comes back. After that, if Ayala is not preforming well, he will be let go. Ayala replaces the rotating door in the 7th bullpen arm. His experience is valuable, and is probably still better than Tim Wood.
And to answer why Rick Vandenhurk is not up, he is currently starting and working to build up arm strength after his prolonged absence due to injury.

"As a 7th bullpen arm, this is a good signing for the fish."
Wasn't that the reason he wanted to leave Minnesota?....He wanted to be the full-time setup man, and Gardy didn't think he had earned it. Why is he going to be happy in Florida where he will be in the same position as he was in Minny?
As a twins fan, i'm glad he's gone. I had questioned the signing since the beginning. I'm just glad he's someone else's problem now. I hope you guys don't mind a few more losses.....
