Thank you Olney. Finally, a reporter saying it like it is.

Someone tell Buehrle he can order a custom Cardinals jersey for $100 with his name and number once he retires.
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 13, 2009 at 02:46 PM
When was the last time that Olney threw out a realistic trade scenario?
"Mark Buehrle told Derrick Goold that he'd like to wear a Cardinals jersey for one day."
Yeah, Mark, Kenny will send you to St. Louis..
if they'll give up Wainwright or Rasmus or Pujols.

Chapman signs an agent not named Scott Boras? Sign me up for him please.

So who would the Phillies A Prospects be? B Prospects?
Are all these guys considered A?
Brown, Drabek, Taylor, Carrasco, Happ, Knapp, Donald, Marson?
Are Donald and Marson more thought of as B? Is Savery a B? Bastardo? Carpenter?
I think the Phillies can get it done keeping one of Drabek/Happ and one of Brown/Taylor and they'd thave to make that deal?
Heck, I'd make it if I had to give up both Drabek and Happ(but I don't think it'll take that). Halladay is a special player and for a team like the Phillies who's built to win now and next yr, yo uhave to do everything to maximize your chances.

"Halladay could go to the dodgers and surely make it to the n.l.c.s. by crushing the phillies in the n.l.d.s. The dodgers rotation would be "
How would the Dodgers be playing the Phillies in the NLDS? They would play the cardinals.
Posted by: Chris | July 13, 2009 at 03:38 PM
Halladay could be traded for Cabrera coke and wang or hughes.
Posted by: Kenny | July 13, 2009 at 03:27 PM
you're kidding right? why would the Jays want to HAND arguably the best pitcher in the game for a 4th outfielder, a middling middle reliever, an injured struggling and DEMOTED starter and an unproven kid?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 13, 2009 at 03:40 PM
Kenny, you have no clue what you are talking about. Halladay said he would go to the NL and the Phillies specifically in an interview on espn radio. He was asked about Philadelphia specifically and he said philly fit the bill. Secondly, how in the world are the dodgers gonna get halladay without trading billingsley or kershaw. What exactly is your argument that the Phillies won't win this season? If they get Halladay they will be the favorites.
Posted by: Chris | July 13, 2009 at 03:43 PM
alright maybe unproven kid was a bit off on Hughes but again you get my point that that trade as you propose would never happen and Riccardi would be rightfully crucified if he ever even considered that.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 13, 2009 at 03:43 PM
Shouldn't you be in school, Kenny?
Posted by: GoPhils | July 13, 2009 at 04:06 PM
"Roy Halladay deserves to be a yankee or a dodger. The way Eric hinske's been swinging the bat he could easily take a-rods position in the playoffs. Also for the world series the Yankees have good hitting pitchers like burnett sabathia pettite is o.k and so is peavy (who I hope the Yankees will get). Halladay could be traded for Cabrera coke and wang or hughes."
Can we implement a simple IQ test during registration before granting anyone access to post on this site?

Chris ... If the Dodgers win the west with the best record, the Cards with the Central with the second best record, the Phils win the East with the third best record & the Giants win the wild card, the NLDS would be Cardinals v. Giants and Dodgers v. Phillies, wouldn't it?

“The Nationals point to the positives in this letter to their fans.”
From the “letter”:
“Much of the season, however, has been defined by weak relief pitching, poor defense, and youthful inconsistency.”
Ok, lets see
“weak relief pitching” = bullpen of Joe Beimel, Julian Tavarez, Kip Wells, Ron Villone, Mike MacDougal, Jesus Colome, Saul Rivera and a bunch of other has-beens or never-were’s following a rotation of 25 and under starters (with “possibly worst pitcher in game”, Daniel Cabrera, mixed in for a couple weeks). What the heck did they expect?
“poor defense” = You have platoons everywhere and they include the likes of Adam Dunn, Austin Kearns, Cristian Guzman, Josh Willingham, etc – again, what did they expect?
“youthful inconsistency” = what youth? The only real youth (in age or experience) on the team is in that rotation – and of course a rotation of 25 & youngers is going to have some consistency issues. Otherwise, Dukes and I guess Anderson Hernandez are the only real youths (With Zimmerman not being a part of this because of tenure). So I can only ask, one more time, what did they expect?
The team was set up to fail. A roster full of questionable vets with no real future on the club (or possibly, the game) and a rotation with no veteran experience. A bullpen not built for wear and tear received from a young rotation, and a dozen or so outfielders all crammed onto one roster.
If the Nationals front office wants to see where the problem comes from for this Nationals team, just look in a mirror. If you are young and building for the future – play kids! If you are trying to compete – don’t use kids in the rotation! If you want kids to learn - give them someone to learn from! Or, if you want kids to grow – let them play instead of yanking them for slumps or burring them on an overcrowded depth chart!

The Phillies will have a much better record than the Cardinals.
Posted by: Chris | July 13, 2009 at 04:52 PM
Kenny = delusional Yankees fan.
Phillies "can't" win. Dude, they just won the World Series and have basically the same team on the field. Why exactly "can't" they win? Just remember that the Phillies are a second half team, a 4 game lead at the break is great news for Phillies fans.
I agree with trading the farm to win this year and next, and even the next. That's probably the extent of the window the current Phillies roster is within. Just hold onto one of the big arms (Drabek, Carrasco, Happ, Knapp) and all should be fine.

here's the video of Buehrle saying that http://qik.com/video/2183008
Posted by: Cody | July 13, 2009 at 05:57 PM
So basically what Olney is saying is something like a Halladay for Taylor, Drabek, Donald, Freddy Galvis & Quinton Berry type trade?
Posted by: gobroks | July 13, 2009 at 05:59 PM
I have been wanting the Cards to go after Buehrle for a while now. I mean, it would be a perfect match up. He is from St. Charles, MO. He has a home in Missouri where his wife and kids are. During the season, he gets homesick and misses his family, so he wouldn't be that far from them at all. He has always wanted to play for the Cards. The Cards could use him for sure, with Lohse's injury and Thompson and Wellemeyer sucking. And the Cards rarely ever have a left handed starter (Mulder was the last one). But seeing as the White Sox are in it, and it would take a huge haul to get Buehrle from them, I highly doubt he will be traded to us. But, after his contract is up in a couple of seasons, if he still wants to play baseball(he said he would consider retirement after his contract is up) then I could see Mark getting his wish and being our ace of the staff.
Wonder what it would take to get him though? Any ideas guys?

i believe scrib said it best above...wainright, rasmus, or pujols.
that man is a valuable commodity for the white sox, and frankly, a HUGE fan favorite. i don't see this happening until buehrle's arm falls off...
(which, by the way, is made of a high-grade rubber/adamantium polymer).

"i believe scrib said it best above...wainright, rasmus, or pujols."
I certainly hope you're both joking about Pujols. If Williams called and offered Buehrle straight up for Pujols, well Mozeliak will die from laughter.
Buehrle is overrated. He's not the ace people try to claim he is. He's a decent number 2 and that's mostly because he can consistently give 200+ innings. His FIP is always higher than his ERA, this year the difference is by almost a full point.

relax...only trying to illustrate his worth to the white sox, relative to his desire to play for the cards.
buehrle gives up a TON of hits, there is no doubt about it. he's been the white sox front man for many years, and done a damn fine job of it.
i believe a cardinals fan called buehrle the ace.

" He's a decent number 2 and that's mostly because he can consistently give 200+ innings."
this is your criteria for a 'decent' number 2 starting pitcher?
fail.

The Braves should get Pujols for Garret Anderson and David Ross. Sound like a fair deal?
Posted by: Braves for NL East!! | July 13, 2009 at 08:30 PM
Before anyone sh"'s their pants, I was kidding. The point is that not a single package could get Albert, from NO team.

Ok Hold on a Sec...
Mark Buehrle said that he dosn't want to be a cardnial bc he would have to face the Cubs at Wrigley field!!!
Ok Mark Buehrle i think i understand so when ur asked by a fellow white sox [fan, anouncer, player] u dont But at the Homerun Durbe Right before the Al-Star Game by his home town he said he would hove to be a Cardnial. Ok Mark I understand...
Posted by: Wrigleyterror37 | July 13, 2009 at 11:18 PM
lol, that's just buehrle taking a page out of ozzie's book. he's been in this town for a while, and knows how to stir the pot.
do you remember when he accused maddux of throwing spitballs? maddux promptly responded with 'who is mark buehrle?'
or when asked about injections he was receiving, he kept insisting that it was hgh?
i love it.

I sure hope Ruben Amaro makes this deal for Halladay work. With a little more pitching the phillies are set up to win for years to come.
I'm tired of hearing about the "untouchables" in the minors. These guys are unproven and who knows what kind of major league player they are going to be? To be in a position to get arguably the best pitcher in the game nobody should be untradeable!
17 days to get the deal done!
Go Phils!
