« Discussion: Mike Rizzo's Team-Building Strategy | Main | Rockies Re-Instate Torrealba, DFA Paul Phillips »

Odds and Ends: Duran, Ichiro, Wright, Manny, Wilson

The Pirates are dominating the rumors lately, but there have been a few other noteworthy items:

  • The Astros claimed infielder German Duran off unconditional waivers from the Rangers. Ken Rosenthal writes that Duran will be put on the DL and will end up in the minors.
  • Though money is tight for many American franchises, SI reports that the earnings for the world's twenty richest non-American athletes are at an all-time high. Ichiro, with $22.5MM, is the only ballplayer on the list.
  • David Wright shook off criticism from former Met John Franco, telling reporters that Franco "doesn't know what's going on" in the Mets clubhouse.
  • Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that the Dodgers prepared for the return of Manny Ramirez with a series of roster moves.
  • And Colin Dunlap of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson apologized for remarks made yesterday that criticized the team's trading strategy.

Tell'em Dave. Who cares what John Franco thinks.

John Franco is a cool guy. Theres alot of things wrong with the Mets, they play lke a Single A team, but thats because of injuries. They are REALLY lucky the Phillies suck.

i like how i initially read the second line in the first bullet point as if Ken Rosenthal was on the DL. Of, how i wish they had a disabled list for sports reporters. Rosenthal has his own spin-zone.

I sportswriter DL would be awesome, phoenix, but I'm gonna change that sentence.

You should probably insert the line "non-American athletes"

Alex Rodriguez is on the list.

Brian,
The Franco-Wright commentary doesn't really fit as a transaction rumor...Tim always made an effort to avoid stuff like this, and I think you really should follow suit. If you look at past posts, Tim was always hesitant to even post about steroid suspensions.

Taking pitiful jabs at Wright, Reyes, and Beltran is getting painfully old.

Kudos to Jack Wilson for doing the right thing, and to the organization for letting him come around on his own.

agree with 86 Mets here Brian....this is supposed to be rumors and a transactions log, not previous players opinions. If I want to read about John Franco taking jabs at David Wright I will go to ESPN....the story will be right next to the story about Joba Chamberlins mom being a meth head.

Please please please don't steer this ship towards a petty national inquirer like type of sports media. This is the last untarnished baseball site we have!!!!!

86 Mets and yanks09: Duly noted and I'll be more discerning in the future. You will notice that our Odds & Ends posts sometimes contain links that are not strictly transaction-related. But I'm all for purity. Thanks for the advice.

You've earned a bonus link: If you follow us on Twitter you saw that I forwarded a link to a video of Royals signee Cheslor Cuthbert. It was originally sent out by Jorge Arangure. Pretty nice swing... http://bit.ly/iGa24

nice video...music was a little corny haha but that sound of the crack of the bat when he went yard was sweeter music to my ears.

PS wasn't trying to criticize Brian....just would hate to see this great site change its course. ESPN (and similar sites) have hit all time lows lately with their reporting and you can't even get anything close to a good baseball talk on those message boards.

Love the site...keep the good work up Brian!

Jack - shut your hole and worry more about the fact your team is tryingto dump you and your paycheck for a sixer of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Franco is an idiot. Half the reason Kazmir got traded is because Franco and Leiter didn't like his attitude. i.e., he wouldn't kiss their rings.
