Odds And Ends: Sano, Gonzalez, Royals

Here's some more reading material for the afternoon...

man i hope the cubs do something, our bullpen hasn't looked too hot.

Dave Sheinin of the Post reports that Bud Selig said the Nats are "on the right track."

Yeah, anything positive for the Nats would be "right track" material. I just hope they can at least try to right that train wreck soon, cause I wanna see someone a 5 team race for the East soon.

Someone? Sorry about that.

That article by Speier reeks of the mentality that every good player wants to go to Boston, that the Red Sox should acquire all these players with their uber-good propsects and 100 mill + payrolls and that Boston deserves all the good players in the league. Acquiring any of these players listed in the article would take a king's ransom nobody should pay for them.

I'm a Sox fan and even I found that article ridiculous. The Red Sox seem to have a new philosophy with their younger players. Of course getting some good young talent through the farm is always a goal of every organization but the Sox now seem to prefer to use their younger guys in the house for any problems.

The point I'm trying to make is that I don't think the Sox are gonna make any big moves, at least not for players who have already peaked or are older than 28/29. I can only see them doing this if there is a huge, glaring need which they do not have. If they got Gonzales, that would block Lars Anderson. Signing/trading for star players when you don't have a big need for them is what screwed the Yankees.

Gonzales, Fielder... lol. Speier can make a case for V-Mart because obviously Tek is gonna be gone soon but I don't think he's a fit. I see the Sox going after a catcher that's better with the glove than the bat.

Oh wow that was way longer than I intended it to be

Unless Red Sox give away a huge pitching prospect and a big time catching prospect they have no shot of getting A Gon, the chances of him leaving are less than 10%

Maybe some guys actually want to win a WS... maybe they see Boston as one of the best places to make that dream happen.

Yes, they have a higher payroll and a deep farm system, but at no point did Speier come off with the attitude like they "deserve" these guys.

I usually dont care about the dumb stories, but common. The Sox writers are saying that Fielder, Gonzalez, and V-Mart are perfect fits. Well, Billingsley, Lincecum, and CC are perfect fits for any team, but they arent going to be moved. For professional writers, you think theyd use some common sense...

There's a growing sense in Baltimore that the Orioles are ready to offer whatever it takes to get Sano. Part of the larger picture is that Andy MacPhail has committed to expand the International Player Development program for the Os. The Uehara signing represents the first forays into Asia; Sano may be the first major undrafted FA signing under MacPhail.

the angels have good pitching and hank conger to trade 4 Gonzo if they wanted.

if the pads go into fire sale mode they should trade:
-Bell to tampa
-Peavy to Boston or Phillies (most likely in offseason)
-Gonzo to Boston or the Angels
-Kouz to the Mariners
-Clay to whoever as long the return is decent.

of course trade position player for pitching and vice versa...the return would be better that way.

By 2011 problem solved Pads back in contention and Moorad should be in solid control of the team by then.

except in Bells case trade for Tampa's mountains of pitching.

Tim Wakefield is hardly one of the biggest bargains since 2002. He's good but just no.

The Washington Post must be looking for other teams to write about, but the article about Ryan for the Cubs makes no sense. It mentions help for the Cubs "beleaguered" rotation - hasn't the Cubs rotation been one of the best in baseball? Marshall has been great out of the pen - why move him?

Gregg has blown 3 saves, but that has hardly been the glaring weakness on the team - Guzman, Marmol and Gregg will be fine - we need to get Soriano and Bradley to start hitting the baseball, if they both end the year above .280 with 25+ HR's (modest numbers compared to their history), the Cubs will win the division by 5 games - it's as simple as that.
