Tim Brown at Yahoo Sports reports that the Padres intend to extend manager Bud Black's contract in the coming weeks. Black is in the final year of a three year contract he signed prior to the 2007 season. Details of the extension aren't known yet.
The Padres are 34-44 on the season coming in to tonight, and are 186-217 under Black since '07.

I'm glad there happy with his .462 winning percentage.

more like he's not to blame for a team with so little talent based in part on poor scouting in past years and the former owner's divorce
can't say i entirely disagree with that

Leave it to a soxfan to make an idiot comment. The guy has done more with less than any manager in the bigs. If he were provided any form of talent or depth the Pads would be contenders.
He is a smart manager who handles his pitchers well...unfortunately he has owners who don't care.

You're not too big on sarcasm, are you? Peavy should've been traded, and has been hurt, leaving him a balnk rotation. Chris Young has been hurt and/or non-existant for a year and a half. And Adrian Gonzalez IS his offense. He has done very well for having nothing. You are the idiot thinking I was serious.

umm no sir your wrong i signed in only to point out your the only idiot here for thinking anyone would recognize that as a sarcastic statement

yea, that didnt sound sarcastic until someone called you out... Anyways, what can you expect Black to do when his club has the same payroll as one McDonalds store...

nothing about that statement came off as being sarcastic...
and before you go throwing out the idiot label towards people, i'd suggest you read up on the proper usage of their/there/they're.

I'm not stupid, dude. It's just a lot easier when using an iPhone.
I admit, it doesn't read as sarcasm, so my bad. But I meant it as sarcasm since, come on, what can he do with a horrible team? And he did almost get them to the playoffs in 2007 (back when they were good... And I still say they got screwed, since Matt Holliday never touched the plate lol)

Black has done about as well as can be expected while managing a AAA team playing against ML teams.
The Padres have averaged a Major League record injuries of nearly 8 players a game on the DL in 2008 and 2009.
Black can't be expected to win many with 8 players on the roster per game that should be in AAA.

considering they're years away from contending, and in the middle of a complete roster overhual, I'd call this a smart move.
Black was arguably the best pitching coach in the game before he got this job, and from what i know is a very good mentor to young players... just the sort of manager you want in the Padres situation.
Padres fans should be happy somebody in the front office has this kind of foresight.

You haven't proved that so far.

I feel for Bud Black. He's a good manager making the best of the bad hand he was dealt by ownership. Little doubt the situation will only get worse as the season progresses. Extending his contract now makes sense. At least he gets the message that ownership knows the Padres' poor performance isn't his fault.

Still. Just type the freaking word out. Why would you choose to look stupid in order to save yourself one second?

Am I really the only one that doesnt think Bud deserves an extension at all, especially a mid-season one??? He should be fired mod-season not extended.

I accidentally assumed that people were more mature than that... My bad.
