Hopefully, for the Phillies' sake, he's been following the Sammy Sosa/Texas, Roger Clemens/NY blueprint for taking time off:
Take advantage of those 7-8 months without being tested.

I may be proven stupid here but why are there so many concerns about Pedro's health? Is he the only pitcher out there incapable of recovering from a surgery? John Smoltz got a great deal with bad arm, so did Mark Prior, Mark Mulder, El Duque, Mike Hampton, the list for injured pitchers getting deals goes on and on. What do teams have against Pedro?

Pedro will always be special to me as Sox fan. Hell yes, this guy is one of the smartest pitchers I've seen. He may not throw 95 anymore, but he can still pitch, and whats more throw strikes.

Of course he can still throw strikes... the problem is, when he does throw strikes now, they get absolutely crushed, and it'll be worse in CBP.

"Pedro told TV reporters that his poor showing last season was partially because of his father's death and his own health problems"
He got hit around in 2007 despite the low ERA.

They have nothing against Pedro Martinez! But, they have little interest in giving a washed up, 40 year old, pitcher with an arm injury a $5 million contract.
This could work for the Phillies; all they are hoping for is that he is able to give them 8-10 reasonably good starts. Maybe there is some life left in his arm after missing the first half of the season. Plus, he will sell some tickets when he pitches against the Mets!

"Plus he will sell some tickets when he pitches against the Mets!"
Yeah man, the Phillies are really struggling to sell tickets to divisional rivals this year. Great point.

Word out of MS is that he's passed it.

The Mets should have really gave some consideration to signing Pedro this offseason. Pedro can not possibly be worse than Tim Redding. Plus for the people saying that Pedro is greedy, John Smoltz got a 5 million contract form the Sox. Smoltz was coming back from surgery and still is not pitching effectively yet. As I have seen posters on here saying that he should retire or come back on a minor league contract, why should he?
