Pirates Talk Extensions With Sanchez & Wilson

It looked like the Pirates might trade Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson away this month, but Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the team wants to keep its double play combination together for years. The Pirates approached Sanchez and Wilson, who are close friends, about extending their current deals.

It appears unlikely that one of the two would sign an extension without the other. The timeline for the deals is short, since the Pirates will need time to shop the pair if they don't extend them.

Both players sound excited about deals that would keep them in Pittsburgh for years. Wilson's current contract guarantees him $7.4MM this season, and the Pirates have the option of paying him more next year or buying him out for $600k. Wilson, 31, said he's open to taking a paycut.

Sanchez will likely see his $8MM option vest next year, but he's open to restructuring it.

GM Neal Huntington says he's not looking to trade all his players, but is "more open" to dealing impending free agents. He doesn't mention John Grabow and Adam LaRoche by name, but both are set to become free agents after the season. The Pirates are discussing Ian Snell with other teams.

It was starting to look like the management was finally committed to a full blown rebuild in Pittsburgh. Not sure if this means they think they're closer than I do, or if they just can't imagine what it would be like to watch their AAA guys try to step in.

Sanchez looked like he might bring a pretty nice return as the deadline got nearer and teams realized there wasn't much out there in terms of bats. Wilson probably wasn't going to net much though.

This only means nobody wants Wilson, and they haven't received a fair enough offer on Sanchez, so why not try and lock them up for cheaper than they're getting paid now.

They may also have realized fans are fed up.

Would love to see this get done. Keeping this solid D up the middle as our young studs come up and our young pitchers continue to wet their beaks is a very good thing. Not to mention we have no one close in the system to replace either one if these guys.

I'm on board with the new FO a 100%. With the Nady trade, McClouth trade, robbery of Lastings Milledge, and then a move like this which makes a ton of sense, but nobody saw coming. And it sounds like Sano's gonna be a Bucco very soon. Good time to be a Bucco fan, winning baseball will be back in the Burgh soon.

Just keep telling yourself that.........

agree with BuccoNation.

As a Cubs fan, I can say I worry about your club in the near future. And really, this entire division (outside of Houston) is looking really interesting for the future. The financial logjam Elmer Fudd created for us is going to hurt, and I am not looking forward to fighting you, the RedStockings, the Crew or the never-count-them-out RedBirds.

"Just keep telling yourself that........."

You do realize they have a Pythagorean of 43-45 right now, right? With a few more breaks, they would be right there with everyone now. They are no where near as bad as people who dont pay attention to the game think.

As much as I have a hard time believing we'll be on the winning side of baseball soon, you don't have to be an a-hole about BuccoNation being optimistic. We buc fans have been through a lot of crap these past seventeen years; we certainly don't need you to shovel on more crap.

I had respect for you until I read that post. The Giants aren't exactly tearing up the MLB.

While I would have liked to see the Pirates move Jack and Freddy the truth is they can't afford to. Ford has looked awful in the minors this year. Bixler and Cruz suck. They were restricted to have to acquire major league ready middle IF in trades. Having 2 veterans on the team won't hurt you especially when one is a great hitter and solid defender and the other is a great defender and average hitter. If they can get Jack and Freddy to sign extensions that would be a pay cut it would be awesome and since they want to play together I see that as a real possibility.

One last note: Add a legit Ace and a legit 30HR threat to what we have and I think we are a WC calibur team.

I'd kinda expect a comment like that from a Yanks or Sox guy maybe, but a Giants fan? Really?

What I'm saying is that we are much closer than we have been in the past 16 years to being a winning ball club, and the pieces are in place, not all of em, to make that happen.

@Suzysman, division could be pretty crazy in a few years, Cubbies will always be contending, same with the Cards, Reds have a great core, and the Bucs aren't far behind. Those Stros might be taking our place in that #6 hole though, I think I remember hearing they have one of the worst farms.

That said, I know we were trying to push for a possible move to the East, makes sense, and would be cool to see Philly and NYM more, who knows what'll happen, looking forward to seeing some good ball here in the coming years though.

That Pythagorean # is pretty crazy, I know with our run differential our record should be better than it is. Encouraging at the least. Still, at the end of the day, we're sittin 12 under.

BucSox, my brother, I love all fellow Bucco fans. But if you really think if we added a Beckett and a Votto to our ballclub and we're perennial World Series contenders... well, you've been drinking that Huntington juice a little to much. I love the direction our FO is going toward in order to strengthen the farm. However, we still have very little depth pitching-wise. We might be a few years removed from a winning season. But a world series contender? We need further talent infusion before we can start smoking that pipe.

My bad, you said WC caliber team. I thought you meant WS.

wow, lighten up guys...I meant that as a joke. Its just that it seems like you guys have been saying you're finally headed in the right direction since shortly after Barry came here. Sanchez is a nice player (I'm not as high on Wilson) ....but he's 31. Extension or not I have a hard time seeing him on the next Pirate team that even thinks about contending for the division title. I just think you would've been better served to either deal Freddy for 1 or 2 middle infielders or high upside arms or let him play out his contract hoping he nets you a couple draft picks.

As a Giants fan I know that things can turn around pretty quickly, but I don't see many arms or any IF prospects that are close to contributing for you guys. The young outfield is very nice but I don't think locking up a mediocre shortstop and very solid, but unspectacular 30-somethings is really gonna help your team's future. The Cardinals pretty much always put a solid product on the field and Pujols isn't exactly old yet, the Reds are loaded with young talent already at the MLB level, and the Brewers still have several very nice prospects and perhaps the best young 3 man core to build around in the NL (not counting the Giants of course ;-) ) I'm not trying to be an a-hole, but I fail to see how things are looking up. Honestly, if you had managde to send Wilson to the BoSox and Sanchez here or to Minny while getting a couple average upside MIFs and an upside arm while shedding about 13 mil from your payroll for next year I'd like your future a whole lot better.

BucSox fan-perhaps you missed it but the Giants have a better record than anyone in your division despite having only one legitimate middle of the order hitter.

Resign Wilson? Wow! He said he's open to taking a pay cut. At least he's realistic and knows his own value. Sorry, he might be scrappy and a fan favorite or whatever, good defense and all... but if the Pirates had better players Wilson wouldn't be so highly thought of there. He's not a very good player, definitely overpaid. They should have traded him years ago. No offense, he's just not that good.

While Wilson is a little soft on offense, I have yet to see a SS that is better than him in the field on a day to day basis. I would be willing to bet that he's taken away 88 hits this season due to his defense or one hit a game. He starts unbelievable double plays and he simply gets to balls that other SS do not.
I'm not saying he's worth crazt money, but I shrudder to think what the Pirates defense would be with out this guy. The fact that he's not going to win the GG this season is going to be a travesty.

LOL....cool, maybe next year they can be the Pythagorean WS Champs....the only reason they're signing Wilson to an extension is cause they realize with his contract, the way it is, nobody wants him.

Adam Everett = Jack Wilson

Both slick fielding, crappy hitting SS'...

Only Everett is making $1M this year.

While teams value defense more than ever, they're still paying for offense.

If the Buc's had to kick in cash to send away Hinske, they'll have to eat a good portion of what's left of Wilson's contract.

Might as well resign these guys because no free agents will want to come to the Pirates unless their getting overpaid.

Since when did people start calling the Pirates the 'Bucs'.

I was wondering what people thought of Garrett Jones' potential power numbers if he played a whole season; could he hit 30 homers?

I like the idea of extending both these players. I think they are more valuable to the Bucs than to other teams and if teams won't give up anything more than fringe prospects, then the Bucs should just hold on to them. I mean, it's not like they have viable replacements for them coming up any time soon.

Smart move by the Pirates management. I'm sure it's gotta be nice if you are a Bucs fan to see that there isn't going to be a complete AAA team up there until all of the good prospects are ready. I'm not sure what prospects they have for MI that could be ready any time soon, so signing keeping the two of them around while the rest of the team develops is smart. It's not like Pittsburgh is having an absolutely horrible year, one big bang prospect and they COULD get a little competitive.

Giants win the Pennant: the Pirates could crawl out of the hole rather fast ( say 2-3 years). Look our own Giants runs in ’93 & ’97. Neither of those squads were lead but sure fire arms and squads directly before them were very crapastic. Instead they played in a wide open division and have few good sticks, very good “d” and got lucky with a couple career years for pitchers. I am not saying it will happen that fast for the Buc’s - only that it could happen like that.

****

Carini: That contract was singed in ’06 if I remember correctly. Not exactly a good gauge to show what teams are paying for in 2010.

****
I think in this case the Pirates front office is trying to increase its leverage. They are basically saying, “We don’t have to move these guys and you need to make us want to.” That part is smart. I am not so sure actually signing those extensions , without a trade in place, is that good of an idea for the Pirates but talking about it sure it.

I'm just wondering if any attempt to trade Adam LaRoche will take into account the fact that:

a. Pedro Alvarez is still a few years away from being ready(assuming he eventually plays 1B).

b. Stephen Pearce could be recalled to play 1B, but how much of a dropff is he from LaRoche?

c. Adam's brother Andy is now the everday 3B--do the brothers want to stick together(and is it such a bad idea to keep them together?)

Just some thoughts. :)

Doesn't matter when it was signed. The fact is, in 2009, teams are not going to pay $7.4M for a good defensive SS with no bat.

That's my point. They're looking to extend him because no team will pay 3+ million for a half season of Jack Wilson without the Buc's eating a lot of money...

Wilson should be taking his agent out to dinner every night of the year if he gets him anything better than a 2yr/$4M dollar deal after this year.

If they move LaRoche I believe they will put Jones at 1st and call up Milledge to play in the OF or just let Young play every day.

If they do sign extensions it will prob be like 2yr/6M for Jack and 2yr/8-10M for Freddy. You already have Ignorant fans that think Freddy is overpaid when Fangraphs say he is worth 11M. While Jack himself is worth 8M. As you can see despite what people want to say statisticly neither one of these two is overpaid.

You do understand that the value of a player is measured by more than just their bat, right?

According to FanGraphs, Wilson is a 1.8 WAR player--that's 1.8 wins above replacement level.

I know that currently, 1 win is valued at about $4.5 million, so a player worth 1.8 wins for the season is worth about $8.1 million.

Now, you may be right about the current market being what it is, but I would think a deal paying Wilson $5-$6 million per year for the next 2 years would be excellent value.

(Especially given that Wilson's 2010 option is for $8.4 million with a $600,000 buyout. Would they tear up next year and re-negotiate it as part of the extended contract, or just give him extra years beyond 2010 that are reduced compared to his current salary?)

I don't see how keeping Wilson and Sanchez improve the Bucs chances in the future. Haven't they been a part of the organization over the past 3-4 years? Isn't that more of the same?

This only makes sense if the Pirates can sign these guys at figures way below market. You might be able to get Wilson to take a $3-$4m/year deal. No way on Sanchez. He already has $8m coming in 2010 (unless he gets injured). Even if you give him more years, I don't see how you can drop his annual base much unless you extend him out 4 or 5 years.

Since when did people start calling the Pirates the 'Bucs'.

It's been at least 60 years.

To give you and idea of their worth lets look at this:

Chase Utley who is pretty much the top 2B in baseball is worth 21+M Freddy is worth 11+, and Dan Uggla who everyone loves is worth 4.5M. Only 4 2B in all of baseball are worth more than Freddy: Utley, Kinsler, Pedroia, and Zobrist. Hill is worth 11.7 and Freddy 11.6 so that is 5 i guess.

Jack is worth 8M and is 7th among all ML SS. So can anyone sit there and honestly say either is overrated or overpaid?

Obviously, those guys dont have enough "value" for trade...

"Obviously, those guys dont have enough "value" for trade..."

It's not that they don't have value it is that Neal hasn't gotten an offer he likes. He isn't going to trade them for bums. If you can't get anything for them why not extend them both 2 years especially when there is nothing in the farm at those 2 positions. Sanchez would bring in a great return. Wilson if you eat most to all of his salary then he could net you a MLB ready SS prospect, not an elite one, but one that can hit.250 and play average defense. I just don't see a point trading them if we can get them cheap for the next couple of years. Then in 2 years they can be moved and will be easier to move with smaller contracts.

the pirates are doing this to up the value of freddy and jack letting teams know hey if you dont want to offer anything good will just keep them...there hoping a team will see this and get desperate and offer more especially for Sanchez...like i said before all these people think the pirates trades of McLouth and Morgan were salary dumps...NO WAY... they were smart baseball moves...Neal Huntington know exactly what hes doing and i trust anything he does...One other thing you guys say we dont have replacements for these guys well yea but whos to say we dont aquire and Eric Young JR from Colorado for a Grabow/Snell package...or SS in Reid Brignac from Tampa Bay for a Matt Capps????... i say send Jack to Seattle for a mid tier prospect or 2 and send Freddy and Adam to Giants for Alderson and 2 or 3 other mid tier prospects and let the rebuilding begin... id rather have a team of McCutchen CF, Young Jr. 2B, Jones 1B, Doumit C, An. LaRoche 3B, Brignac SS, Milledge LF, Moss RF the rest of there year. then a team with Jack Freddy AD LaRoche here now.

Since forever. Another name for a Pirate is a Buccaneer...Buc(s) for short. Get it?

Actually....the Steelers were originally called the Pirates and the baseball team started as the Alleghenys.

Pirates became the baseball team's nickname in 1891.

Steelers was adopted in 1940 after seven years of also being the Pirates.

Carini: 2/$4Mm for Wilson? If he was free agent this winter he would do better than that. No lingering health issues (unlike Everett last winter or Hudson), Very solid glove work. No, it would not be what he is currently getting paid but would be much closer to that then $2MM per. I think you are massively under estimating the large amount of suck that I out there in the available SS pool.

I don't see how keeping Wilson and Sanchez improve the Bucs chances in the future. Haven't they been a part of the organization over the past 3-4 years? Isn't that more of the same?"

They dont have near-ready prospects for those spots. So while they would have this dynamic outfield trio, maturing 3B, and one of the three young catchers behind the plate, they would be searching for stop-gaps up the middle and at first. Keeping the Vets they have, which both technically are positive value players, eliminates a possible hole as the kids come into their own. The lineup, next year, could very well be NL-Central contender worthy. The pitching might be a bit more questionable, but some strong pieces are in place there as well.

Keeping these two would keep a black hole from presenting itself while the rest of the team grows. Seems a great idea to me.

send grabow snell to colorado 4 eric young jr Then send Matt capps 2 TB 4wade davis wilson 2 seattle or boston for 2 prospects Then send Freddie sanchez and RYAN Doumit 2 the cubs for josh vitters and some pitching prospects mybe 2 may need 2 add duke 2 get the cubs deal done hope not

If Casilla falls flat in MIN (again) I wouldn't mind seeing them swap middle infields with PIT, plus a little leavening to make it worth everyone's while. Wilson and Sanchez for several of Harris, Casilla, Tolleson and young pitchers would give a present to MIN and a future to PIT. And frankly the short contracts are more appealing when you're talking middle-aged middle infielders.
