The Rockies signed reliever Matt Herges to a minor league deal, according to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post. The 39 year-old had been cut by the Indians.
The Rockies were quick to re-up Herges after he helped them reach the World Series in '07. Though his controllable skills didn't change much in '08, his ERA was 5.04 and the team chose to decline his '09 option.

Oh, didnt think I would get to say this until the "Indians DFA Winston Abreu" post. Had forgotten that Herges would get another post for signing with someone else, giving me another opportunity to say...
Shapiro, what the hell were you thinking?
ok Scribbletone, your turn

Just looks to me like nobody else thought Herges was worth an MLB roster spot either, let alone a 25 man roster spot. He signed a minow league deal. Explain to me again how Shapiro screwed up so badly by dumping Herges. I'm not getting it.

"minor" not "minow"

Who is this garbage . Why would you sign him. I rather sign Tom Glavine than this no name.

Why would you NOT sign him? It is a minor league contract, and he has a 3.89 FIP and a 3.00 K/BB.
He was part of the Rockies 2007 WS run, and he was pretty decent in both 07 and 08.
I wrote an article for Purple Row on Herges and his peripheral stats: http://www.purplerow.com/2009/7/4/938282/matt-herges-the-reason-we-look-at
(I figured a plug wouldn't hurt too bad given it's directly on topic)
He's not gonna be the solution to the bridge to Huston Street or anything, but he can't be any worse than Rincon or Peralta.

MickS,
Abreu cost Meloan and Herges, despite being arguably the least talented of the group. That is why.

Good signing for the Rockies especially since it is a minor league contract. but he wont help them very much
