The Royals acquired utilityman Ryan Freel and cash from the Cubs for a player to be named later, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
The Cubs designated Freel for assignment Thursday after a disappointing 14-game tenure with the club. They traded Joey Gathright for Freel two months ago.

to go along with Luis Hernandez and Tony Pena Jr.? Maybe this means the end of TPJ, since Hulett was already sent down...

Ryan Freel is gone before Aaron Miles?
Can Hendry hurry up and release Miles.

Good scrappy guy, gives you everything he has all the time. Maybe he could have an impact on some of there players ans show them how to play the game right.
Posted by: bravoboy10 | July 06, 2009 at 01:38 PM
yeah... or could be a precursor to Gordon coming back, and Teahen heading out of KC.
Posted by: dp1974 | July 06, 2009 at 01:41 PM
besides, KC already has a scrappy, give-it-all guy in Willie Bloomquist. But, it beats a no-stick, no-run guy like TPJ.
Posted by: dp1974 | July 06, 2009 at 01:41 PM
Yep, this tells me 2 things:
1) Teahen is leaving soon.
2) Gordon's not ready to return...
Posted by: JimmyJack23 | July 06, 2009 at 01:42 PM
I don't really see Freel starting, but more as the super-sub role that Teahen was expected to play. Love to see Escobar in KC though, to man SS.
Posted by: dp1974 | July 06, 2009 at 01:47 PM
I expect that we'll hear the announcement about Teahen being traded fairly shortly. Freel will most likely fill in at 3B until Gordon returns. I don't see any other reason to sign Freel...
Posted by: JimmyJack23 | July 06, 2009 at 01:51 PM
with hernandez and bloomquist on the roster, freel's batting average of .143 is 52 points higher than pena's. A much better use of the 25th-man spot. Or at least, I HOPE its Pena that goes.

"Freel gained some notoriety in August of 2006 when The Dayton Daily News reported that Freel talks to an imaginary voice in his head named Farney.[2] Said Freel: "He's a little guy who lives in my head who talks to me and I talk to him. That little midget in my head said, 'That was a great catch, Ryan,' I said, 'Hey, Farney, I don't know if that was you who really caught that ball, but that was pretty good if it was.' Everybody thinks I talk to myself, so I tell 'em I'm talking to Farney."[3] Freel later said that Farney's name arose from a conversation with Reds trainer Mark Mann: "He actually made a comment like, 'How are the voices in your head?' We'd play around and finally this year he said, 'What's the guy's name?' I said, 'Let's call him Farney.' So now everybody's like, 'Run, Farney, run' or 'Let Farney hit today. You're not hitting very well.'"[4]"
Awesome.

@JimmyJack23
I wouldn't say that it means Gordon is not ready to return. I mean its obvious that he wont return before the break, thats been made clear. But I think hes on track to return on the original announcement, sometime after the break, most likely in July.
But I do agree, this most likely means Mark will be out of here by weeks end.
Posted by: Bannister19 | July 06, 2009 at 02:04 PM
I hope he is ready to return, it just concerns me that we went out & picked up a guy who just two months ago was traded for Gathright...
Thanks for your input Professor! Great to get an insiders POV!
Posted by: JimmyJack23 | July 06, 2009 at 02:17 PM
lol, he was just saying how much he liked the NL because he gets more playing time with double switches, etc.

"Ryan Freel is gone before Aaron Miles?

Hendry doesn't want to admit that the Miles contract was a mistake yet, even though Miles is one of the worst players in the game to be under contract for next year, along with guys like Gary Matthews Jr. and Willy Taveras.

LOL 2ND THAT!!! I WILL MISS FRELL IN CHICAGO!!!
Posted by: Wrigleyterror37 | July 06, 2009 at 02:44 PM
Don't forget Nick Punto, Scribble.
His contract makes Miles look attractive.

"Don't forget Nick Punto, Scribble.

I'd kill to have Punto over Miles.
Neither player is really anything with the bat, but at least Punto is a plus defensive shortstop, third and second baseman.
Miles offers nothing offensively or defensively, except for the fact that he doesn't strikeout.
Miles and Gathright were two of the worst moves that I've ever seen a decent GM make, and yes, I consider Hendry to be a decent GM, he's just not a good one.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 06, 2009 at 03:05 PM
I agree that Punto's defense makes him more desirable as a player, but he's also making twice as much as Miles, which is flat out ridiculous.
That's not to mention Punto's horrendous baserunning skills, which is something that doesn't translate as much into stats. Still, his boneheaded decisions are just staggering sometimes. For a guy who's got speed, you'd think he'd be a good baserunner.
He also constantly injures himself by sliding headfirst into first base. Despite acknowledging that it's not fundamentally what he should be doing, he claims "it's instinct" and he "can't help himself."
Punto's range is tremendous, but he's got a terrible arm and gets bailed out pretty frequently by Morneau. Justin's pretty underrated defensively in my book, just because of how great he is at digging out Nick's CONSTANT low throws. He refuses to set himself and make a good throw, even with a slow runner coming down the line.
Punto basically just doesn't think when he plays, and it's painfully apparent when watching him on a day-to-day basis.
I'm not sure how much Miles is, and maybe I'm just irate after watching Punto's pathetic play for five years now, but he's an awful awful AWFUL baseball player.
So naturally, Bill Smith nearly tripled the next-closest offer for Punto's services to ensure that he came back.
Now we "don't have unlimited funds," so Sano's off the table. Great.
In short, if you want Nick Punto, have him. :)

How did this post turn into a Punto/Twins review? Last I checked this was a Royals/Cubs thread. Hold on...yep that's what it is!
Posted by: JimmyJack23 | July 06, 2009 at 03:22 PM
Freel --> Bad Cubs moves --> Aaron Miles lamenting --> Nick Punto lamenting --> Competition of who's worse: Punto or Miles
That's the progression. :)
Besides, the Royals are in the AL Central. It's all connected in the end Jimmy!
Posted by: MorneauVP | July 06, 2009 at 03:24 PM
I still think that Miles is definitely worse when you throw out the contracts.
Miles is just so bad that it's almost sickening. I can't stand to watch his at bats because it's a big deal if he can even hit the ball far enough for the outfielder to catch it, and yet Lou continues to throw him out there as a pinch hitter.
I've gotten the vibe from your post that you feel similarly about Punto, where you just hate to even see him in the game because you can't imagine that he'll actually do anything to help your team.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 06, 2009 at 03:32 PM
Wow, we really discussing which of us has the suckiest player in here?
Well, being a Cubs fan, I of course have to go with Miles. But seeing your situation with Punto does give me some comfort in a twisted kind of way. I can honestly say, he is NOT someone I would trade Miles for - something I figured would never cross my lips.
Well, let me rephrase. I would not trade Miles for Punto unless we keep our current costs. I dont care which we release, Punto or Miles, as long as it only costs the 4.9 we promised to throw away.
Posted by: SuzysMan | July 06, 2009 at 03:43 PM
Who said KC would be sellers this July!! This changes everything!!! They're going for the pennant!!
Kidding...we suck.
Posted by: Thunder | July 06, 2009 at 03:47 PM
Guess this is a "Freel" good story for the Cubs
Posted by: ryno23 | July 06, 2009 at 04:16 PM
I still can't believe that we spent $4.9M on Aaron Miles when Bobby Abreu costed $5M plus a couple more in incentives.
Absolutely blows my mind.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 06, 2009 at 05:01 PM
this will vault us into contention before the all star break definitely...lol and please make TPJ the PTBNL or just release his sorry ass....muahahahaha
Posted by: GeorgeBrettShitsHimself | July 06, 2009 at 05:02 PM
Tony Pena Jr. is a good defensive man but is the worst hitter we've had. I say we send TPJ, Guillen and Mark Teahan to the Cardinals and get Ankiel and Mark DeRosa from the Cards.

one bum down, a few more to go hendry.
freel used to be a pretty decent player, but the 2009 freel is injury prone and even more weak hitting then the younger freel. also, he has lost some speed, an important part in his game.
miles is the next glaring bum that needs to go. baker is taking a roster spot too from a sam fuld or andres blanco.
with ramy, johnson, and guzman coming off the DL, i will scream bloody murder if fox is sent down to AAA Iowa. I think it has been 10+ years since i have missed watching a game on tv. if fox is sent down today, i will not watch a cubs game for a least a week. he is hitting the heck out of the ball. Anyone got his numbers? i know he has at least 4 HRs and 11 RBIs.
ramy may struggle for a little while since he has not played an MLB game since May 8. need fox for insurance.
Posted by: CubsFanSinceBirth | July 06, 2009 at 05:53 PM
no one cares about the cubs in this thread...find somewhere else to bitch and moan
Posted by: GeorgeBrettShitsHimself | July 06, 2009 at 05:54 PM
i also agree that soriano could be sat i think for at least a week. let fox and hoffpauir platoon in left. if soriano is not hitting, why have him play LF. he can throw the ball well, but he is a horrible defensive player.
lou has always said he will go with the hot hand or bat. well, soriano is as cold as the north pole. sam fuld was hot, but lou benched him after two games. fox is hot, but now that ramy is back, lou will bench him too.
i really like lou, but this year he is not doing what his says he likes to do. go with the hot hand or bat. lou do what you say and i and the majority of cubbie fans will be happy. (not everyone will ever be happy at the same time. it is physically impossible)

Hendry and the Cubs had such a hang up on getting lefties. I thought they needed just one and Bradley's not the one, yet. So they got Miles, a switch hitter. They should have kept Cedeno or counted on one of the young guys or went and got someone at the end of their career who could hit the ball out of the park. Hoffpauer was the LH power, but who's the RH? Fox is a nice bat...now. I liked the idea of Aurelia for a year. 30 or 40 starts maybe. I also liked Griffey or Edmonds in a platoon in right but not at 10MM per year.

What does Teahen bring that the Cubs are interested. I hear a couple of teams are interested.

Apparently, Mark Teahen brings similar versatility that DeRosa had back when he was with the Cubs...he can play many positions and is a relatively good hitter [by Cub standards, he's good.]
Posted by: Azul Cachorro | July 06, 2009 at 11:35 PM
Trading for Freel has nothing to do with Gordon, honestly. Freel is going to start the majority of gams in CF. Maier has blown his extended chance to stick with Crisp out.
Gordon has been pretty good in his rehab stint and will probably be the 3B the first game after the ASB. Meaning that Teahen is gone.
And, @dp1974- tpj is NEVER, EVER, EVER going to leave. Sorry to say, but Dayton has it stuck in his mind that "he is just to valuable to try and sneak through waivers." Who in the world would pick him up?! He's not even at half of the Mendoza Line!!!
Posted by: KCsince88 | July 06, 2009 at 11:59 PM
*so* scary that TPJ and Hernandez < Mario mendoza.
Posted by: dp1974 | July 07, 2009 at 02:30 PM
Hernandez just DFA'd to make room. Pena stays. :)
Posted by: dp1974 | July 07, 2009 at 02:55 PM
and....that play that let the tigers win the game last night (where freel missed the diving catch and thames hit a hr) yea mitch maier definitely would have made that play....hes much quicker than freels old injury ridden self
