« Red Sox "Desperately" Want To Move Lugo | Main | Towers Speaks About Possible Moves »
MLB.com's Dick Kaegel reports that the Royals have designated shortstop Tony Pena Jr. for assignment to make room on the roster for the recently acquired Yuniesky Betancourt. Pena has hit just .156-.178-.192 in 288 plate appearances since the start of the 2008 season.

Rany Jazayerli and some other writers should be happy now.

$20 says the Braves pick him up, just for nostalgia's sake.

My money is on the Yanks, just because Tony Pena is a coach.

1st, he was DFAd not released. He is still a Royal.
2nd, Finally.

I would like to see the Pirates get him.

They had talked about making Pena Jr. a pitcher because of his amazing arm strength and complete lack of offensive talent.
Apparently he has a fastball that is consistently 95+ and can throw a nice curve and change up.
Itd be worth having a look at.

Yea, but they're going to put him on waivers, were he can be picked up

True, Bannister. But the Royals will either have to trade him or put him through waivers in the next ten days. If he clears, he can be outrighted to the minors or released. He's basically up for grabs if some team is that desperate.
Ray Oyler can now rest in peace.

This was long awaited.
Except that his replacement is only marginally better. And costs much more money and actually cost prospects.

No way any MLB team is gonna pick him up and put him in the big team

lol, the real irony of it all is that this is basically the exact same circumstance in which TPJ was acquired.
The current SS sucked (Berroa), so DM trades a prospect for a stopgap who everybody else knew would be just as bad (if not worse), and he ends up starting for 2 years and being so bad that DM has to trade for another SS, who, of course is going to be just as bad as the previous 2 SS's and now you are 3 prospects and a few million dollars shorter.
This is the Royals front office, ladies and gentleman.

Yeah, as much as they have waited for this day, it finalizes a BAD thing. TPJ, 1 top prospect and one throw-in
for Betancourt and a (I believe) a 10Million contract. Only the Royals could screw up something as simple as getting rid of Pena Jr.
Posted by: SuzysMan | July 16, 2009 at 06:36 PM
Wow, this took way too long. I must say, I'll always thank Pena Jr. for his Royals debut in 2007; 2 triples and a win against the Sox. I'm saying the Yanks, though, yech! He's not even AAAA, personally.
I called this one exactly: "My prediction for the next sub .300 OBP player to be moved today is TPJ, via the DFA, to make room for the recently aquired Betancourt."

That Tony Jr is lights out. He's just the kind of lovable loser that we like on the Braves. He could be the worst SS since that d-bag, Chris Woodward.
Of course this means we want him.

Thank God! TPJ was garbage, and I can't believe it took this long to dump him.

Re: Royals and Shortstops
YOu have to hope that Dayton feels a little buyers remorse after hearing the Sox are willing to basically give up Lugo for nothing all for less (prospect-wise) than Cortes.
After the first few years the Royals would be wise to hire someone to pull the parachute everytime Dayton gets a hair up his arse to do something.
Between acting too quick to sign Guillen, jumping the gun on the slumping salaries this winter and now leaping off the bridge to get a SS when more were about to become available, you would think that DM would learn to chill the eff' out before making a move.

"Rany Jazayerli and some other writers should be happy now."
Rany is a whining hack and frankly I don't care if he never posts another blog entry.
