« O's Grant Livingston His Release | Main | Angels Sign First Round Pick »
According to John Marshall of the Associated Press, via USAToday.com, the Royals have signed Chad Orvella to a minor league contract.
The 28-year-old right-hander was released by the Rays in early June after posting a 6.12 ERA in 32 1/3 innings for Triple-A Durham. The Royals immediately assigned him to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where he'll work in middle relief.

Wasn't he the Rays closer of the future just a couple of years ago?

The Royals have just announced that Orvella will join the big league team after tonight's game, and will bat third and start at shortstop tomorrow night. If possible he will pinch hit for any player in the lineup late in tonight's game. They are hoping he can provide some pop in the middle of the order. If he is unable, they will look into signing Richard Simmons to hit cleanup. They love his versatility and fell like he can go both ways.

He, like Andy Sonnanstine, destroyed in the minors because he had great control and average stuff. He was ok in his early stint with the Rays, got hurt, and was never the same.
