White Sox Sign Top Pick Jared Mitchell

The White Sox are set to sign top pick Jared Mitchell, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. The 20-year-old hasn't officially signed, but he's expected to sign soon and report to Class A tomorrow. The White Sox, who selected Mitchell 23rd overall, haven't disclosed the terms of the bonus they'll award their top pick. Mitchell met the media and Ozzie Guillen at U.S. Cellular Field today.

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo now says it's a done deal. The bonus is for $1.2MM, according to PGCrossChecker.com.

Fantastic. Let's get him going and see if he can join Beckham and Poreda by 2011. It would be nice to see an OF of Quentin-Danks-Mitchell without having to make a big trade. Just get us a a SP and a 2B or 3B Kenny!

Yeah it is nice to see these high ceiling first round picks the last 3 years with Poreda, Beckham and now Mitchell.

I hope I'm wrong but this guy has Joey Gathright written all over him.

curse you mpm.

on another site, he said he really looked up to henderson/lofton...

if he's even 2/3 the ballplayer those guys were, i'm happy.

I hate to nit-pick, but the headline says they signed him, yet the text below it says they haven't officially signed him. So which is it?

he's official.

It's official. It's also official that I am excited for this guy. He says he likes to watch Torii Hunter and Carl Crawford and pariah says he looks up to Lofton and Henderson...I hope he's cut from the same cloth as those guys. I'm seriously excited.

The first time I saw him play I likened him to Carl Crawford and the next day I saw a story by Orel Hershiser (who covered the CWS) and he said he looks just like a young Crawford.

Well, Mitchell said he wanted to sign fast, I'm glad he stood behind his words!

This kind of makes you wonder - rather than missing a whole summer of pro development, if you can get a decent deal, that puts you almost 1 year closer to FA than waiting until the August deadline. Doesn't this warrant some kind of consideration, rather than the total initial package? Unless you have no confidence in your own skills, as a draftee.

I really like that Mitchell will have this whole summer to develop - from what I've heard, he'll need it!

That is a nice move. I would love to see these guys on a single team. Maybe by 2013 they can win a championship.
