First Victor Martinez, now David Wright. The Mets third baseman told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post that he would "love" to be a Met for life (Hat Tip: MetsBlog). The Mets can keep Wright through 2013 under his current deal, so it's a little early to consider extending it, but Wright says he's open to talking if the Mets ever want to extend his contract.

Evan Longoria too: http://twitter.com/EvanLongoria

Nevermind - looks like the Longoria one is a confirmed fake:

Wright was quoted saying, "I would love to be a Met for life, I love this team, and I really want to choke for the rest of my career."

Citi Field has little to no effect on Wright's HR production.. in fact, he has more HRs at home than he does on the road.
Posted by: Baseball Nut | July 15, 2009 at 10:03 AM
Looks like Wright should get himself Rosetta Stone if he's considering staying in NY until retirement.
Posted by: Schmidty | July 15, 2009 at 10:05 AM
Rosetta Stone??? Oh, because everyone on the Mets is Latino? HAHAHAHAHA, THAT IS LITERALLY THE FUNNIEST JOKE I HAVE EVER HEARD! SO CRISP AND ORIGINAL!
.......
Excellent news though

I guess to some people..winning championships is just not a big deal
Posted by: Blinkingfoo | July 15, 2009 at 10:10 AM
Thank god david wants to be here his whole career. Seriously people have to stop the break up the core talk. When the mets finally win it one year it will be a whole lot more satisfying to have home grown players. Although i wouldn't mind trading beltran for a younger centerfielder but no way would i trade david or jose, i mean whoi could you possibky get back that someone would realistically give up for one of them? you wouldn't be getting the same value from what u get as you would with jose or david

blinkinfoo what fan are you?

Why do you hate yourself, David?

Expect a MetLife tie-in upon signing his lifetime contract.

Some guys don't want to become mercenaries to win championships.

wait a minute icedrake who in that context is "mercenary"? who are you speaking of?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 15, 2009 at 11:27 AM
No one in particular. Just saying some guys would rather stay with one team and try to win a championship there since it'd mean more to them. Especially if they grew up rooting for that team.
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 15, 2009 at 11:32 AM
icedrake,
oh ok. Listen I give David credit. Don't know the context it came up in but many lesser people would realize how bad its going for the mets at the current moment and either not say anything that would lead to speculation about wanting to leave. He did the right thing and most often times he does. As a phils fan I respect that but I'd also love to see him traded so we don't have to face him!
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 15, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Wright has said this before and since he grew up a Met fan (he's from Norfolk where their AAA team used to be), I believe he's sincere.
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 15, 2009 at 11:54 AM
didn't realize he was a mets fan growing up. Makes me respect him even more. If i didn't despise the rest of the team so much I might actually root for him!
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 15, 2009 at 12:08 PM
No way he would ever leave the Mets, they were his favorite team growing up and he is their franchise player.
Him leaving would be like Jeter leaving the Yankees. It just won't happen.

Met fans should be happy.... an overrated singles hitter at a corner infield spot wants to remain with your team for life. Awesome!!!
Posted by: PIGEON | July 15, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Ever hear of "leverage", midtown? David Wright doesn't make as much as A-Rod because he hasn't had a chance yet to hit the free agent market (or have the threat to hit the free agent market)
Nowhere in his quotes does he say, "And I'll stay here for less than market value too!"
Posted by: yclept | July 15, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Also Midtown,
It is a big stretch saying he plays great defense. I respect the guy and I know he makes some flashy plays, but he is a bottom feeder on just about all defensive stats for a 3rd baseman this year and middle of the pack last year. That's why there is rumors he should be at 1st.
Posted by: Boomer | July 15, 2009 at 12:58 PM
The Mets are lucky to have David Wright at a fraction of the cost of A-Roid. Wright brings great defense, a potent bat and none of the headache surrounding a guy who dates manly looking strippers and hangs out with Madonna.
Posted by: midtown | July 15, 2009 at 12:11 PM
You do realize Wright is only in his 5th full year, whereas Rodriguez is in his 14th, right? Wright will not cost what he does now for the next 9 years - you can bet on that.
And I also agree with Boomer. Everytime Wright throws the ball from third, I have to hold my breath and pray for the best. When Rodriguez fields, you know his throw is going to be spot on.
Posted by: jrs | July 15, 2009 at 01:30 PM
I hope no one is taking this too seriously. People say things like this all the time and don't follow through. This is one of those things that is a media friendly statement because if he said anything suggesting he might one day leave people will say he doesn't want to be there. Now that said I see no reason for him to leave anytime soon but it is impossible to predict 5-10 years down the road after all he is still VERY young. Again I stress there is no reason for him to leave anytime soon I just think everyone should keeps these comments in perspective and take them with a grain of salt.

Wright signed a long term deal while he was still in the arbitration phase of his service time, while Rodriguez hit free agency after posting one of the greatest offensive performances in recent memory.
David Wright is one of the best players in the game, though, and the Mets are lucky to have such a brilliant player that wants to be a part of their team. Posted a 26.2 WAR from 2005-2008, which is superstar level production.

"Citi Field has little to no effect on Wright's HR production.. in fact, he has more HRs at home than he does on the road."
This is so ridiculous. If you think Citi Field is not effecting Wright's (and everybody elses) home run production, you are totally crazy. I hate when people bring up the fact that a player/team has mroe homeruns here then there so this place is not a hitters/pitchers park. I heard it all year from Phillies fans in the past. They have more road home runs then home home runs!
The only problem with this is that you aren't facing the same set of circumstances on the road as you are at home. For the home/road HR numbers to really mean a lot you would have to face the same pitchers at home as you do on the road. There are times when a team just plays better on the road, for whatever reason it may be, it doesn't mean that their home park isn't a certain type of park. Just means that there are certain factors that change on the road, especially in this case, because Citi Field absolutely take home runs away from everybody, anybody can see this.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 15, 2009 at 03:23 PM
Yeah, didn't Baseball Prospectus have a piece on how Citifield was sapping Wright's pull power in the earlier part of the season?
Or am I imagining things?
Posted by: scribbletone | July 15, 2009 at 03:31 PM
I wouldn't be surprised. Not only his pull power, but he used to hit a lot of home runs to the RCF power alley at Shea, which was big, but it is now 415 to that spot. Even in that regard, the Mets are so stupid that they build a park that really hurts their best player in every was possible offensively. They are totally clueless top to bottom. Can we finally get a look at Jon Niese?
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 15, 2009 at 03:45 PM
every way possible**

This is false. Wright has lost more HRs to the new dimensions than any other Met.

Posted by: PIGEON | July 15, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Over the last 3 years (06-08), Wright has hit more HRs than Utley. Your comment looks even more ludicrous considering Shea was basically a pitchers park and CBP is a bandbox.
Posted by: caseyB | July 15, 2009 at 04:09 PM
i believe Wright also said in an interview at some point he purposefully tried to hit more to the gaps of Citifield than trying to hit HR's.
That makes complete sense. Why would he hit long fly outs as opposed to doubles? He's absolutely doing the right things.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 15, 2009 at 04:10 PM
Well yeah, but a hitter like David Wright has always been far better when he isn't trying to hit home runs. As good as he is, he gets into these slumps where he tries to launch everything, develops a big upper cut, and swings through 86 mile per hour fastballs with lots of plate. Hence, the 87 K's.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 15, 2009 at 04:13 PM
Seriously what do you expect Wright to say? The article didn't say in what context Wright said these things but I am sure a reporter asked something like would you be happy if you were traded or something like that.
You have to be an absolute moron to answer any different than David did.
Posted by: yanks09 | July 15, 2009 at 05:45 PM
If someone is put on the spot, you would expect short politically correct answers. This is not the case here if you read the interview. Wright took the time to elaborate on his preferences.
At any rate, it's perfectly in line with things he's said in the past. Right after he signed his multi-year contract with the Mets, it was reported Wright's camp wanted an even longer deal, buying out more of his free agent years. Omar didn't bite.
I think Wright was being totally honest when he said these things.
Posted by: caseyB | July 15, 2009 at 06:07 PM
Papelbon is a Yankee one day and a Red Sox for life the next what the hell is this world coming to? As for Wright I can see him being Mets for the duration of his career or atleast making a good run til 2013
