Solid move, in my opinion bigger trade (possibly 3 team deal) involving the Yankees to follow
Posted by: FreeSide | July 31, 2009 at 02:19 PM
This is their big aquisition? (sigh)

In 40 minutes? Doubtful.

"in my opinion bigger trade (possibly 3 team deal) involving the Yankees to follow"
I doubt it... they need a guy who can play OF with speed until Gardner comes back and he can play INF to boot
"This is their big aquisition? (sigh)"
at least we didn't trade Joba to get him
Posted by: Bill | July 31, 2009 at 02:22 PM
Jerry Hairston Jr. will be a nice fill-in until Brett Gardner returns - then a nice replacement for Cody Ransom
Posted by: BWOzar | July 31, 2009 at 02:22 PM
yea as a yankees fan, this trade is upsetting
Posted by: Chimpy310 | July 31, 2009 at 02:23 PM
What? Why the f$*k???
Posted by: PMACK | July 31, 2009 at 02:23 PM
The trade the pirates made .... Sean Smith to Blue Jays for considerations .... WOW
Posted by: FreeSide | July 31, 2009 at 02:25 PM
Jerry Hairston is chock full of intangibles. Dusty Baker is probably crying right now.
Posted by: Monroe Says | July 31, 2009 at 02:25 PM
Straight up for Austin Jackson
Seriously though ... he is an OK utility guy with no need to be sitting on the bench for my poor Reds. Even if its just a cash deal at least he'll be playing for a contender and not rotting away on our pathetic team.
Posted by: Gunner65 | July 31, 2009 at 02:26 PM
Jerry Hairston Jr > Cody Ransom
Posted by: Corey | July 31, 2009 at 02:26 PM
i love JHjr..but this one seems confusing to me from a yanks standpoint, is gardner gonna be gone that long??

Whatever....Jerry is at least an ugrade over Ransom AND can play a little CF-LF. At least we won't have an automatic our whenever Arod needs a rest. However, I always though Hinske would play some 3rd as Arod's backup.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 02:26 PM
What about a nice trade for Bannister to sure up the rotation when Hughes comes in and Joba goes to the pen via the Joba rules?
Posted by: roddluck | July 31, 2009 at 02:26 PM
Oh great, now I get to read how Hairston is the best multi-positional player of all time.
Posted by: Dirty Water | July 31, 2009 at 02:27 PM
its a decent move cuz of whats going on with them, but if this is our big trade, then yea. kinda wak

Ok guys, What the Heck do you want the Yanks to do besides getting a SP and maybe a reliever? You guys want an upgrade at 2B or 3B?
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 02:28 PM

I want to see youtube video of Dusty Baker throwing a hissy fit and crying everywhere.

Red Sox get great hitting catcher/1B and Yankees counter by securing Jerry Hairston???

You all need to take it easy...Jeez people.
Nice little pick up for the Yanks. Probably cost us nothing.
End o' story

Hey Dirty Water, Hairston is the best multi-positional player of all time, just something you have to deal with.
Posted by: NYCBaseball | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Wow! Boston gets V-Mart, NY gets Hairston Jr. Way to answer, Cashman!
Posted by: revive85 | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
joba only has AT LEAST 3 more starts in him before they move him into the bullpen so he can use the rest of the innings to reach his max. (Assuming his innings limit is 150) We need another starter...
Posted by: Joec314 | July 31, 2009 at 02:30 PM
I'm sure we probably gave up nothing to get him (hopefullly). Not the blockbuster that we are accustomed to but a solid pickup, just like the Hinske deal.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 02:30 PM
We made our move when we plucked Tex from Boston earlier before the season. They are playing catch up and losing prospects to do it.
Posted by: roddluck | July 31, 2009 at 02:30 PM
I dont know what people expect the Yankees to really do.....
Theyre locked at 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, Catcher.....there are no OF's worth moving prospects for....they have Mo Closing, Phil Hughes doing damn well for the 8th inning Setup role......
All they really needed was a better utility guy than Cody Ransom and a Starting Pitcher.....They got the Cody Ransom issue out of the way now with Jerry Jr.
Posted by: Corey | July 31, 2009 at 02:30 PM
largebill and just about every other moron on here. One minute you all want to comment on how the Yankees always take the players, get what we want and now we have the luxury to listening to boobs like largebill with "Red Sox get great hitting catcher/1B and Yankees counter by securing Jerry Hairston???"
Think about it next you hit the "post" button. Moron

That's the last thing the Yanks needed to do. Making reactionary deals to keep with the Jones gets you in trouble.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Duke or Bannister could round out the rotation quite nicely. Thoughts?
Posted by: roddluck | July 31, 2009 at 02:32 PM
utility men with speed are ALWAYS useful, especially if they can just about everywhere.
And as someone mentioned, this deal probably cost next to nothing. This obviously was not intended to counter the V-mart trade...
Posted by: Me | July 31, 2009 at 02:33 PM
hey revive 85- Yanks get Texeria Boston gets a big f-u. Remember that one?
I tell you I try with all my might to be diplomatic, complementary of other teams players, but these comments...I mean come on...Boston fans act like they just landed Albert P for scraps...

Posted by: FreeSide | July 31, 2009 at 02:34 PM
I played against him all the way back in little league in Naperville, IL. He's a good utility guy and will help you fill in where you need filling in. I hope he does really well for the Yanks.
Posted by: napercubs | July 31, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Duke or Bannister would be great fits but I think we might have a better chance getting Bannister. If we could pull it off without giving up Joba, Hughes, Jackson, and Montero that would be great. But the Royals aren't dumb.
Posted by: Joec314 | July 31, 2009 at 02:35 PM
ok yankees fans quit bitching! seriously Hairston is a great player and the reds didnt have a spot for him! and who did the reds get in return?
Posted by: RedsFan2013 | July 31, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Yankees are going to get Brian Bannister mark my words.
I'm hoping you're correct.
Posted by: roddluck | July 31, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Dear Cody Ransom,
Nah nah nah nah...nah nah nah nah...hey hey hey...get lost.
Nice utility/bench depth.
Did we give up Igawa hopefully?!
Posted by: InvalidUserID | July 31, 2009 at 02:36 PM
Very solid move.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | July 31, 2009 at 02:37 PM
Hey Redsfan I don't see any Yankee fans complaining on this thread. You? All I see is a lot of other people rambling about nothing that does not make sense.
It like the blind with a semi-automatic rifle just firing anywhere and everywhere.
Posted by: TheDugout | July 31, 2009 at 02:37 PM
Remember trades happen even after the 4pm deadline. I can see the Yankees getting Brian Bannister or maybe Paul Maholm and an OF
Posted by: FreeSide | July 31, 2009 at 02:38 PM
Bannister isn't passing through waivers so you'll have to get him before the deadline. It's going to cost alot too.
Posted by: revive85 | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
well no but Hairston is a great player trust me! ive watched many games and he can play anywhere except 1b and catcher ... what did the reds get? Brett Gardner?
Posted by: RedsFan2013 | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
What about giving up Ian Kennedy and other prospects for Bannister? Ian kennedy is still a good prospect. He just needs to get his confidence back.
Posted by: Joec314 | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
I still would like A. Harang.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
Stop complaining. Be happy with what you have Yankees fans, you got Sabathia, Burnett, AND Teixeira in the off-season! Isn't that enough!
Posted by: snowboy1224 | July 31, 2009 at 02:42 PM
Rolen to the Reds.
Posted by: Kulaid33gobrs | July 31, 2009 at 02:42 PM
we will give you Harang and Arroyo take them we dont want them we need room for bailey maloney and Lehr so just take them i am tired of watching them there frickin terrible and cost to much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: RedsFan2013 | July 31, 2009 at 02:42 PM
I'm not complaining, but i don't understand why we can't get PITCHING help. The Yankees have always had problems with pitching. Granted the offseason moves, but you can never have enough pitching and we pick up Jerry Hairston? Another outfielder possibly? I don't get the moves made by Cashman somtimes. We have a utility player in the minors, his name. Ramiro Pena...
Posted by: ShawnTheYankeesfan | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Why would the Royals give up Bannister who is proven, cheap, and young for Kennedy who is just young and cheap? Ridiculous. Better throw in Montero or Romine to even get Dayton Moore on the phone.
Posted by: revive85 | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
IPK is out for the season. Players on DL can't be traded. Not that anyone is knocking on the door for him but ya know...
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 02:45 PM
Now this one also want Montero for Bannister.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
No way Montero gets in any deal unless its a superstar...

Austin Jackson in return?
Posted by: Jays4Life | July 31, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Folks...I have 2 words for you FIRST PLACE. How much do you think they needed to do? Joba is getting hot... hughes is finally reaching his potential...the chemistry is better than it has been for years. They're fine, folks...their in FIRST PLACE. Why are you panicking?

Posted by: clar5 | July 31, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Jonathan Mayo posted on Twitter that the Yanks sent Austin Jackson for Hairston, but hes trying to confirm. I cant see any way that true but if so Cashman MUST be fired

this is a good move and he slots in well as that super-sub the yanks really like. 4th OF, buh bye Cody...it also allows them to develop pena in the minors. Best of all...I won't be seeing Nick Swisholishes in RF dropping flies every night. At least not in the 8th inning when it counts. Good move with the future in mind.
Posted by: pickles807 | July 31, 2009 at 02:53 PM
Jackson is their Future OF he could be their CF next year and melky would take over LF with Damon and Matsui leaving for free agency.
Posted by: Joec314 | July 31, 2009 at 02:53 PM
that guy cant be right. cashman cant be that stupid to sent jackson to the reds for this washedup guy
Posted by: LnnM360 | July 31, 2009 at 02:55 PM
e still need an arm badly or we are in trouble. Joba has an inning limit and Aceves might need a stint on the DL. I'm praying for Scott Downs or Brian Bannister. I would prefer the young high upside Bannister but I will be happy with Downs who could lock down the 8th inning letting Phil take Joba's spot when needed. This would also give us a lights out 7-8-9 combo of Downs, Joba, and Mo for the stretch run essentially making the game 6 innings for our opponents while we bat 9.
Posted by: JoeYankee | July 31, 2009 at 02:57 PM
Are you nuts CosaOne? No way we traded Jackson for a backup utility guy.
Posted by: JoeYankee | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
Awesome! Just the move I wanted.
Nah, Jerry is a good all around player.
Will play some center, I guess.
Even though Melky is doing fine.

Jackson and Romine for Bannister. If they give up Jackson for Hairston this is a total panic move by NY to answer Boston's activity.

An outfield of Melky-Jackson and Swisher is terrible. Melky is an average Cfer(at best) or a 4th outfielder not a starting corner outfielder.

Melky will not play everyday in LF.

You guys are smoking something smelly. Jackson for Hairston? He's the orgs top prospect. He goes as a piece in a Halladay like deal...not a bit player. Calm down boys.
Posted by: pickles807 | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
revive85 honestly....Do you have absolutely any idea what you are talking about?
Posted by: TheDugout | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
why'd the ROID SOX trade for yet another 1B. What do they have 7 now?

Cashman isnt stupid.

definetley NOT Austion Jackson*
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 31, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Looks like Its Catcher Chase Weems according to Ken Davidoff. The yankees have minor league depth at catcher so its a good move by Cash.

Red Sox get great hitting catcher/1B and Yankees counter by securing Jerry Hairston???
Posted by: LargeBill | July 31, 2009 at 02:28 PM
That is because Boston needed a 1B and Yankees didnt(Tex) -Yankees got what they needed - A decent Utility guy...Bosox still have not addressed their pitching staff - Bucholz/Penny/Old Man Wakefield???
Posted by: Rob G | July 31, 2009 at 03:14 PM
no way Cashman gives up AJ for Hairston..
Posted by: Rob G | July 31, 2009 at 03:15 PM
I'm praying that Cashman can make a deal for Halladay...
Now that would be a counter.
Ian Kennedy plus ______ ???
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 31, 2009 at 03:20 PM
Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com is reporting that Jackson may be on his way to Cincy for Hairston. He'd better be wrong. That would be worse than the flogging the Reds gave Toronto in getting Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso for Scott Rolen.
Posted by: RotoDendron | July 31, 2009 at 03:21 PM
Im hearing Doc to the Angels
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 03:22 PM
Nope. Looks like Hairston was dealt for Single A catcher Chase Weems. That's more like it.
Posted by: RotoDendron | July 31, 2009 at 03:23 PM
Dominican: I thought I heard that Halladay was traded to the Angels too?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 03:28 PM
Yep I'm hearing Saunders, Aybar and 2 more players
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 03:30 PM
They shot down the Halladay trade but confirmed the Peavy. Oh well, whom cares right? As long as it's not the Sox or Rays.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 03:38 PM
I do care. Yanks always have a hard time beating the Angels without Doc, imagine with him
Posted by: DominicanYanks | July 31, 2009 at 03:42 PM
Dear God, Jackson better not be gone. As far as people bitching about a big move...why? The Yanks are in first place. We don't need Doc, though it would be nice, but we're FINE. They needed a speedster while Gardner is on the DL...Hairston can play ANYWHERE in the IF or OF...option Ransom back down to AAA where he belongs; keep Hairston in the OF until Gardner gets back and then you have a speedy bench player capable of playing anywhere when someone needs a night off.
Posted by: YanksFanWB | July 31, 2009 at 03:52 PM
Good move for the Yanks. Hairston can play all over the infield and outfield, everybody can get a little rest right now while still having a quality player in the lineup unlike Ransom. Would expect him to compete with Swish a bit too for playing time.
As for not getting a SP yet. They did not need to hit the panic button and trade for a SP.....after all this is only the first trade deadline.....MOVES CAN STILL BE MADE PEOPLE SO UUURRRRVEEEEEYYY BODY CALM DOWN!!!!
These minor moves are the types of moves that contributed to the late great 90's Yanks Dynasty!!!!! It wasn't blockbuster trades padding the Yanks with all stars at every position. In case all you have short term memory loss, the Yanks SUFFERED when we had all stars all over the place (Giambi, Brown, Johnson, Pavano, Farnsworth...not so much but a coveted free agent who was selfish)
Team chemistry baby!!!!! Keep doing your thing Cash, they won't question you when you take down the crown!
