« Odds & Ends: Wade, Rays, Freddy | Main | Hughes Sent To O's, Completes Zaun Deal »
Jim Callis of Baseball America reports the Mariners have agreed to terms with first-round pick Nick Franklin. He was handed a $1.28MM signing bonus, close to $100K more than MLB's recommendation for his slot. The high school shortstop was selected 27th overall in June.
17 of the 32 first-round draft picks have now signed. Keep it locked on MLBTR as Monday's deadline looms and visit our first-round tracker page for a quick refresher.

When I read this on twitter I thought they signed Ackley...
Ah well, good signing.

Meh, Franklin and Baron were both slight overdrafts. Obviously, Jack Z gets the benefit of the doubt, and between these two guys, Ackley and Polythress, the Mariners have added a lot of positional talent.
But they probably could've done more with these picks if they didn't feel the need to allocate the majority of their draft budget to Ackley, although he's clearly the best position player in that draft.

I thought Franklin and Baron were supposed to be signability picks? Over-slot 1st round money for what many called third rounders? I'm a big Z fan, too, but he may have blown this one.

Yeah, I definitely didn't see Franklin getting an overslot deal.
