« Odds And Ends: Byrd, Timlin, Giambi | Main | Crow & Scheppers Face Different Deadline »
The Mets acquired second baseman Anderson Hernandez from the Nationals, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com. Ed Price of AOL FanHouse says the Nats obtain minor league second baseman Greg Veloz in return.
Hernandez, 26, already played for the Mets from 2005-07. This year he's hitting .251/.310/.320. Veloz, 21, is hitting .232 without much power or plate discipline in high-A ball.

yeah he was he stunk with the nats.

New low for the Mets. Trading back for a crappy player. Ugh.
Posted by: moebarguy | August 06, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Anderson Hernadez was originally a Mets farmhand, but they decided to part ways with him. Giving up Greg Veloz who according to Baseball America is the Best overall Athlete in the Mets Farm System is a terrible job by Omar Minaya... I guess when your pressed for players due to injury you have to do whatever possible to get position players ... but why not Ryan Freel... this is where the race factor will continue to play in.
Posted by: FreeSide | August 06, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Please....Veloz is a bum and positively awful....
Posted by: NeoExelor | August 06, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Yeah seriously... what good is an "athlete" if he has a career line of .247/.310/.348?
Trash for trash. It happens. Move on.

They have done this before ... they traded 2 prospects to get Angel Pagan back and so far its working out for them ... however the Mets have no power and are looking to the Nationals for upgrades =T Like stated before, Greg Veloz is the best athlete in the Mets Farm System ... he is fairly young, why not give him a shot and see what you have. NOOO instead Omar goes out and trades him for a player with little value anymore.
Posted by: FreeSide | August 06, 2009 at 10:47 AM
"why not give him a shot"
Because he sucks?

Scouting Report on Veloz:
Veloz hit his way out of the SAL with a scorching performance after the All-Star Break at age 20. He brings plus big league speed to the ballpark every night. Veloz has the ability (range, hands and arm) to play MLB caliber defense at second, one of the tougher positions on the diamond to fill.

That's Omar Minaya's ace in the hole?
Posted by: PWHjort | August 06, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Personally i think Veloz is a bum too, but is he much better or worse than Anderson Hernandez? Why does Omar continue to bring in players who once were with the Mets and never panned out?... all i am saying is i would rather have seen a young gun brought up from our farm system instead of trading for a player that is similar to Angel Berroa... Malo, Veloz, Corronado, Flores (too young) ... anybody from OUR system.

Pagan, CF
Cora, SS
Wright, 3B
Murphy, 1B
Francoeur, RF
Sullivan, LF
Schneider, C
Hernandez, 2B
That lineup is pitiful regardless of the injuries that this team have sustained. Countless amounts of roll players were available but Omar neglected to go after them. The Yankees made two great moves to bolster their team with the acquisitions of Eric Hinske and Jerry Hairston Jr who the Mets could have had for a single A catcher and a pitcher equivalent to Eric Hacker... cmon Omar do your job!

veloz is terrible.
Posted by: Baseball Nut | August 06, 2009 at 11:02 AM
Another Dominican guy for the Mets ey?
Posted by: Russell | August 06, 2009 at 11:25 AM
FreeSide you really want Freel? He's been released by half the teams in baseball this year for good reason. As BP would say, the fork sticking out of him is glowing.

Chris Woodward was desinated for assignment by the Mariners. That's they way I would've went, but does this trade really matter anyway?
If any Met fan on the east coast stays up tonight, god bless them. I will be snoring by first pitch.
Posted by: MikeyNY | August 06, 2009 at 11:31 AM
I think we know why Minaya would never pursue Woodward...

The Mets are now the team to beat.
Posted by: CT | August 06, 2009 at 11:49 AM
Haha the mets are getting injuried everyday yesterday jon niese gary sheffield both were injuried and the day before that we lost luis castillo.
Hopefully everyone stays healthy and have a better record than the nats

Freeside are you really that dumb picking up little roll players when they r 7 and 8 games out is stupid they arn't gonna help this team win that much. So yea lets give up prospects so we can get a guy whos hitting 257 with little power.
Posted by: nyreyes15 | August 06, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Veloz was terrible anyway. He was fast, that was about it. His arm sucked, saying it was good enough to play 2nd isn't really saying much. He can't hit for average, has a poor approach at the plate, and has no power. It was a salary dump far the Nats, it just prevented the Mets from rushing someone up. It's not going to put the Mets over the top in the playoff hunt, but giving up Veloz is pretty much giving up nothing.

vtadave, I get it, Omar likes Latins but Veloz was born in the DR. This was about getting a body to play SS or 2nd since Castillo is clearly headed for the DL.

Those of you calling for deadline deals to improve the Mets- who do you have that's worth anything? Omar is depleting your minor leagues system similar to how he destroyed the Expos system in the early '00s. As long as Omar is there, and probably for 5 years after, you will not compete without overspending on free agents at every position. You guys don't suck this year because everybody got hurt, you suck because there is no organizational depth to fill the holes left by injuries. Minaya has never valued the farm system like he should and the Mets will pay for his mistakes for years to come, IMO.

ummm....vtadave....i guess the reason why Omar didnt pursue Woodward is related to the reason why he pursued Francour...and Sullivan....and Sheffield...and Redding...
lol
some of u guys really make me laugh...u will never be happy til the mets resemble a hockey team...
Posted by: JMM | August 06, 2009 at 05:17 PM
...also the reason why he shipped away Castro so that Brian "Boricua" Schneider can stay on the team...
Minaya found out Castro was really Polish and felt betrayed by Castro...
We all knew Daniel Munoz, Jeff Fernandez, and Cory Santana were so much better than Raul Murphy, Manny Francour and Bobby Sullivan to play LF this year...
lol
Posted by: JMM | August 06, 2009 at 05:23 PM
ok, for next offseason the mets should sign bobby abreu to play left field and trade for a first baseman, but im not sure who. Someone give me some names, and for who...
Posted by: johan is GOD | August 06, 2009 at 10:36 PM
"I think we know why Minaya would never pursue Woodward..."
Chris Woodward-
1 year/$0.7M (2005)
signed by NY Mets as a free agent 12/04 (minor-league contract)
Know who the GM was? I will let you take one guess......
As for Hernandez, I always liked him. He is better then Alex Cora or Angel Berroa, he gives you good defense and speed up the middle. I don't mind this deal.
