Minimum Salary

Ever wonder what the smallest possible payroll is? You couldn't field a major league team for less than $10MM this year, because the major league minimum is $400k. Players with at least one day of service time and players who have been on the 40 man roster for two or more years make at least $65k, even if they're in the minor leagues. Minimum salaries at the major and minor league level increase regularly to account for the cost of living.

The Marlins had the smallest opening day payroll this year, at $36.8MM, or about $5MM more than Alex Rodriguez's 2009 salary. Even with a payroll that small, they're spending about $27MM more than the absolute minimum.

Slow day, eh Ben? :)

jeez really.

I always find this statement hilarious, with regard to major league salaries:

"Minimum salaries at the major and minor league level increase regularly to account for the cost of living"

Yeah, because inflation makes it really tough to live on $400,000 a year.

I know minor league players can make as little as $950 a month in the bottom levels, but that's not what we're talking about here. We're using the terms $400,000 and "cost of living" in the same sentence. That's just hilarious.

You do realize that your typical 'replacement level player' only makes the major league minimum WHILE he's in the majors, right?

So, a scrub like Nick Green or Cody Ransom is making a prorated $400k, but as soon as he's demoted (or released), his pay reverts to minor league (or nothing).

You ALSO do realize that the average MLB career is much shorter than the average, say, white collar career, no? So, your typical MLB player making the minimum (again, superstars notwithstanding), who's done NOTHING but play baseball since 13 years old, has NO OTHER QUALIFICATIONS should his baseball career end, can maybe make major league minimums for a few years before his career is over.

$400k x 3 years is not retirement money, and that guy will probably end up bouncing between the independent leagues and minor leagues, making crap money in the meantime.

I'll take my $75k salary straight out of college and retire in my 50s with more money than the Cody Ransoms and Nick Greens of the baseball world.

Having dumped Peavy and with Giles and Young on the DL, the Padres are currently putting a team on the field with about 13 million payroll.

And it shows.

Hey B3NG4L ... ya, especially in comparison to last week.

Baseball players NEED to make a lot of money because they SPEND a lot of money.

"I'll take my $75k salary straight out of college and retire in my 50s with more money than the Cody Ransoms and Nick Greens of the baseball world."

Really? I'll take a $400,000 salary for 3 years (that's $1.2M by the way) and then at age 26 or so, take advantage of the scholarship program that is a part of every contract signed, unless I already had a college degree. The team I signed with will pay for my college education and then after I graduate, I'd come out making your $75,000 a year and retire at 40.

Yes, that is the way it works. I've been there.
