« Odds And Ends: Royals, Mets, Marquis | Main | Rosenthal On Competing In The AL East »
1:32pm: The Twins acquired Mahay from the Royals, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The Royals will cover most of his salary, and the Twins will pay the pro-rated MLB minimum, which should amount to less than $100k.
1:14pm: The Twins are "on the verge" of acquiring reliever Ron Mahay from the Royals, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Royals designated the lefty for assignment last week. He allowed 55 hits and 19 walks in 41.1 innings, striking out 34. We first heard of the Twins' interest in the 13-year veteran yesterday.
Mahay makes $4MM this year, so there's about $740k remaining on his contract.

This is great for the Twins!! They need bullpen pitching!!!

@Okaypoppi, a 38 almost 39 year old 5ERA lefty isn't exactly good news. If the Royals, who have the WORST bullpen in the league, passed the Nationals this week, Designated him, then you know he's not too good.
I just want to know what we got for him!

The Twins picked up Mahay for one reason only.
The Twins, not the White Sox, are the threat to pass the Tigers in the division. The White Sox will return from the current road trip too far behind to catch up.
The Tigers have seven games left with the Rays, and will be lucky to win three. But after that the Tigers just have to hold their own against the division and have a lot of home games left.
The Twins have already been lambasted by the AL East. Although they are 4.5 games out and below .500, they have a shot.
The Twins play six more games with the Tigers. Three are in the absurd dome where all visiting teams are beaten before they start. The other three are the the last three games of the season, in Detroit. The division title will likely be settled in that final series.
That's where Mahay comes in. The Twins can use an extra lefty reliever, after Sept 1 roster expansion, to face Granderson in the late innings. Granderson is hitting .180 against lefties, without power. Against righties he's extremely dangerous. The Tigers cannot remove him and lose his defense.
Mahay will be asked to get a handful of crucial outs in six games: late inning Granderson at bats.

Very insigtful post, pmc765. That doesn't change the fact that Mahay was absolutely atrocious this year.

I don't think we are getting anything Bannister19. Just salary relief of sorts.
I agree with you. There is really no way to make the Royals pen worse.

lol at revive85.
LOOGYs like Mahay (who aren't even effective) are probably the most overvalued niche players in baseball.

If you'd like to add to the fire, you could point out that lefties are hitting .278 against Mahay, including Granderson being 2-3 off him this season.
Granted, it's a small sample size, but then again, we're dealing with the conspiracy theory here that Mahay was acquired just to face Granderson at the end of the season, so I'm going to say my addition to the conversation doesn't have to be 100% logical. :)
Mahay is just terrible. I just looked at his numbers and he's even worse since the All-Star Break. Ugh.
Remember when they could've traded this clown a year ago because of the success he was having? Bet they're glad they held onto him.
