The Padres outrighted the contracts of Josh Geer, Drew Macias, Luis Rodriguez, and Eliezer Alfonzo to Triple A today, according to the AP. Rodriguez and Alfonzo elected free agency.
Rodriguez, 29, hit .202/.319/.260 in 251 plate appearances this year while playing shortstop and second base. His defense graded poorly, based on UZR. Alfonzo, 31 in February, hit .175/.197/.254 in 117 plate appearances. He logged 255.3 innings behind the plate.

Alfonzo just doesn't hit enough.
It's tough to keep a ML job when you strike out ten times more than you walk.

Those two got WAY too much playing time last year, good riddance.

Neither one of these guys did much for the pads this year. Josh Geer was pretty lousy and has pretty much fallen out of grace with the staff.

I still can't figure out why players that are so... bad... opt for searching for a job rather than just going to AAA, when it's fairly evident that they should be playing in AA.

Now that these guys are gone we can bring in some useful bench players. Hairston JR or Freel would be good pick ups. Both can play multiple positions as well as run and hit a little. With Freel having an off year, he could be got on the cheap.

Pads can't afford Hairston ( I mean they can but why would he choose to go to SD when playoff teams will want his services for the same price) and Freel in all likelihood is done.
