Odds & Ends: Cardinals, Orioles, Garner

Apparently Sunday afternoons in October are a slow time for baseball news. Who knew? Here's some links to tide you over for now...

  • Viva El Birdos takes a look at the 2010 rotation options for the Cardinals, both internal and external. Could Kyle McClellan or Blake Hawksworth succeed in the rotation?
  • Roch Kubatko isn't sure that the Orioles are in the market for a left-handed reliever at all, though he does mention that they're expected to re-sign Mark Hendrickson.
  • Brian McTaggart from MLB.com held a Q&A session with Astros managerial candidate Phil Garner. Garner managed the Astros from 2004-2007.
  • Adam Rubin expects the Brewers to hire Rick Peterson as their new pitching coach. General manager Doug Melvin recently flew to New Jersey to meet with Peterson, and as Rubin points out: "How often does a GM fly halfway across the country to interview a pitching coach? Isn’t it usually the other way around?"
  • Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reports that Tony Bernazard is close to signing on with Scott Boras, stating that Boras likely sees Bernazard's rapport with Latin players as a valuable asset in recruiting new clients.
  • J.J. Cooper at Baseball America ranks the Top 10 Independent League prospects, with Reynaldo Rodriguez ranking number one. The Red Sox purchased Rodriguez's contract last week.

I think I would rather see Garcia in the rotation. Hawksworth is historically much better in the bullpen, and Boggs should develop a bit more in AAA/spot starts. The 5th starter is another mystery though. Probably taking a bargain bin starter like Sheets or Harden would be the best bet.

1st of all the cars pitching will not be as good next year and harden would only make it worse he only goes 5 innings.... and the way franklin is pitching... you need a closer haha go cubs!!!

cubs4life - I know you're just 12 and all, but fans of the Cubs saying negative things about the Cardinals just isn't something someone was one iota of intelligence does.

sounds like a angry cards fan to me.... and you take things way to serious and i hope you can grow up and lern to take a joke... and would suck to be a cards fan to get swept out of the playoffs trust me i know... but only a 12 year old would say something as stupid as what you did said day of mlbtraderumors... when all you can say is something a pre skoo kid would say

Harden isn't really a bargain bit starter, he's going to be expected a pretty decent amount of money. In the past two seasons, he's struck out 352 and walked 128 in 289 innings. Those are some awfully big numbers.

This.. this just isn't the way to go about getting respect.

McClellan can't even make it an entire season in the bullpen without getting worn out. How do they expect him to start for the whole year?

I'd rather them go after someone like Bedard (providing he comes at a discount following surgery). They need a lefty on that staff.

Well, he puts up big numbers, but for how long? No GM is going to commit him to a 3+ year contract with his history. He would actually be better suited for a relief role, as he only goes 5 or so innings.

cubs4life, if you take a minute to check your post for spelling mistakes before you hit the "post" button, you might not sound like a 12 year old. You're still not going to get any respect and you still will sound like a foolish kid talking smack (BTW, how did the Cubs do in the playoffs?), but at least you'll sound like a foolish 15 year old and not a foolish 12 year old.
