Odds & Ends: Blue Jays, Towers, Pirates, Mets

Here are some links to kick off Sunday morning:

  • Some Blue Jays players approached CEO and President Paul Beeston with complaints about Cito Gaston, reports Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun“They raised the issues,” said Beeston. “They were listened to. They have not been addressed at this time. I had my ears open. I kept my mouth shut. I gave them some comments and that’s all I want to say about that.”
  • Jordan Bastian of MLB.com writes that newly appointed Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos was emotional in his introductory presser.  The article notes that the position of president and CEO will be filled soon, relieving the interim hire, Paul Beeston.  Beeston says that while the next president and CEO will have the authority to hire its own staff, he will recommend that Anthopoulos remain as GM.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes that Kevin Towers didn't deserve to get fired considering all the obstacles he has had to work around in San Diego.
  • Towers conducted a farewell press conference in San Diego and Craig Elsten of 619sports.net posted some key sound bytes.  Towers insisted that the organization maintained a strong focus on scouting and player development under his watch.  He also said that he has been contacted by seven or eight other teams to work immediately, but wants to take some time off before jumping into another job.  The 47-year-old made it known that he wants the opportunity to be a GM again.  Also available are team owner and CEO Jeff Moorad's post-podium comments.
  • The Pirates have talked to Andy LaRoche about possibly moving from third base to second next year to make room for Pedro Alvarez, writes Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  The Pirates would like to call-up Alvarez by the middle of the 2010 season, but first he must improve his strength and conditioning.  The 22-year-old excelled after his mid-season promotion to AA, posting .333/.419/.590 with 13 HR in 60 games.
  • More from Kovacevic as he labels the Pirates' trade of Nate McLouth to the Braves to be the worst personnel move of the year.  Kovacevic says the deal hurt the players' trust in Pittsburgh management and was a poor public relations decision.
  • Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post tweets, "Jerry Manuel was in meetings all morning and said he expects an announcement tomorrow on changes and the team's offseason plans."
  • Jon Heyman reports via Twitter that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria refused to comment on a possible manager change.  Recent reports suggest that Fredi Gonzalez could be on the way out and Bobby Valentine could be on the way in.

Alvarez at 3B and LaRoche at 2B could be a problem defensively.

I would say the Blue Jays firings a few weeks back, and now JP have more to do with the new CEO and President coming in rather then what the reporter on here stated earlier about the team not going to be spending money in the offseason.

Sure the sale of McClouth was a bad PR move, but considering it made room for McCutchen, a possible RoY, it could have been a whole lot worse.

Who thinks the Mets should move Castillo and sign DeRosa to play second base along with signing Holliday?

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post tweets, “Jerry Manuel was in meetings all morning and said he expects an announcement tomorrow on changes and the team’s offseason plans.” At Metsblog, Matt wrote, Jerry "will make an announcement"…

So does that mean Jerry, or someone else will make the announcement? Who gives the announcement is quite important…

If the former, Jerry is in trouble… Also If Omar and Jeff are there too, maybe Omar is in trouble. Maybe they will announce a change in responsibilities for Omar – Director of Minor League Operations at the same salary? Then maybe they could bring in Towers or even Bobby V, who is said to want some “front office” responsibilities in addition to leading the club…

Also, I dont think the Mets can get Holliday... DeRosa maybe... He can play LF, and backup the IF positions...

The Mets need that one extraordinary hitter, and Holliday is that. Bay and Abreu are also out there. If theu cant sign Holliday, I would love to see the Mets add Abreu and DeRosa as well as several Starting Pitchers, like Webb, Piniero/Marquis, and Sheets/Bedard.

dont think Holliday would come- A) power numbers would drop, B) hed require a HUGE contract leaving us little money for a C, 1b, and 2 SPs

The Pirates won the McLouth trade. This coming from a Diehard Braves fan. McLouth was highly overrated because he put up good number on a bad team. Charlie Morton is going to turn into a star. Gorkys Hernandez could be a good leadoff guy one day. Locke isn't much but he's still a prospect.

We dont need a 1B. Murphy is going to be a great hitter, albeit slightly underpowered for 1st base. Sign a good left fielder and DeRosa and your getting another 40 or so homeruns. Catcher I also think they're fine. Pitching is where they should really go crazy with the spending.

really go crazy with the spending.

Because we've all seen how great a strategy that is, haven't we?

I'm a Die hard braves fan as well, and I'm not afraid to say that we lost in a trade, but I think we did good on this one. It wasn't a great trade, but Gorkys really lacks power. I can see him being an Omar Infante type player. Locke was the only one I was worried about losing, actually. We pretty much knew what we were getting with mcclouth, and he's came through pretty well. Low average, decent power, and great defense.

Gorkys has no use to the Pirates unless it's in a trade. He's not better than McCutcheon or Tabata, and I'm not sure if I want to see an outfield of those 3. Tabata and McCutcheon may have developing power, but that is never a guarantee.

I don't think any team won this trade yet. Morton is probably too inconsistent to be anything better than a 4th starter, but as with every trade, time will tell.

"Kovacevic says the deal hurt the players trust in Pittsburgh management and was a poor public relations decision."

As a person who makes his home in Western P.A, this is an understatment to say the least. After this trade, jerseys disappeared from the stores, fans and newscasters trashed the remainder of the season and failure was assured, not from the players, but the paying public. The fact is, if the Pirates want to contend and be relevent again, they must reach out to thier fanbase in a better way. I also blame the local media. They forget the buccos are from Pittsburgh all together sometimes. They have to do their part all year long, and remind viewers of the game that night. I noticed when the Dodgers came to town a few weeks ago, no one knew they were even in town. This happens quite a bit up here. After June 20th, people tune out because the bucs just aren't covered by anyone but FSN. The Pirates must do their part, and the fans/media must do theirs as well.

Gorkys is a plus plus defender in center. PNC has basically 2 centers with its large left field. If Gokys can hit near .300 with a .350 OBP he'll man center and McCutcheon will slide over to left. McCutcheon is probably a 15-20 HR so that will be fine.

DeRosa would be awful. Hes an overrated Type-A that wont be nearly as productive next year (not that he was productive this year - 1.8 wins above replacement, which is nothing special at all).

Waste the 2nd round pick on a Matt Holliday if anything.

I can't believe any Braves fan would say that the Braves "lost" the McLouth trade. Nate is a CF who plays excellent defense and also has power AND speed. He is a 25/25 candidate who is just entering his prime. He is also signed to a team friendly contract for the next three years. The best part is that the Braves only gave up a 4th-5th starter type (who they didn't need) and 2 minor leaguers that may never even make a major league roster. How could anyone criticize this trade from the Braves' perspective?? As far as I am concerned this was another BIG win by Frank Wren.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, except that Gorkys might not make a major league roster. He has a great skill set, but the power just isn't there. And it may not ever come. You may be underestimating the pitchers as well. I think the braves got a talented center-fielder for a price a little lower than people may have expected.

McLouth does NOT play excellent defense.

That Gold Glove that he won was an embarrassment to the voters, he's got a -8.0 UZR/150 in center for his career, which is a large enough sample size to state definitively that McLouth is below-average defensively.

The best thing about McLouth's 2009 was that he increased his walk rate up to 12% and posted a near league-average UZR. On the other hand, his contact rate was 84%, right in line with the numbers that he posted in 2005-2007, so it's highly likely that his 88.4% contact rate from 2008 was a fluke.

The McLouth deal was pretty solid for both teams, but Gorkys Hernandez will be the guy that likely determines who comes out on the better side. There are a lot of doubts about whether Hernandez will hit enough to play everyday at the ML level.

.286/.342/.386 for Hernandez in over 1,600 minor league at-bats doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence. Neither does a 97 AB/HR rate, a rate that probably is actually inflated by a handful of inside-the-park HRs. Sure, a guy can suceed at the major league level without a lot of power, but he was also just 19-for-35 (54%) in SB opportunities this year with a .312 AA OBP. Sure, that was his age 21 year, so it's far too early to write him off, but thinking he's going to be an impact bat is probably wishful thinking.
