A few more links to peruse as MLB officials sift through rainy forecasts in NYC...
- According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland GM Billy Beane has touched base with free agent right-hander Justin Duchscherer. It's not yet clear, however, whether the A's will try to retain him. MLBTR profiled the "Duke of Hurl" about a month ago.
- Diamond Leung passes along a nice anecdote involving Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng and Justin Orenduff, the club's 2004 first-round pick. Orenduff was designated for assignment last year to clear roster space for Manny Ramirez and then retired in March of 2009.
- As noted by Scott Lauber of the Wilmington News Journal, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. believes putting together a winning organization is about more than simply finding the best talent. "We have guys who, throughout the lineup and in the rotation and the
bullpen, are just good guys, winning-type players who believe in each
other," said Amaro. "I would put our clubhouse up against any clubhouse I’ve ever
been around or may ever be around." It's corny, but you can't argue with the results.
I think the A's should target one SP type on a 1 year deal (or 1 yr with an option). Whether its Duke or not, is to be seen. The last thing the A's need is another one of the young arms having shoulder surgery or TJS.

Speaking of Duchscherer how many people went on the DL this season for "sad"?
Not that im complaining or anything because it is nice to see something that puts someone on the DL that I dont have to see the name of either Dr. James Andrews or Dr. Lewis Yokum referenced.

Clinical depression is much different than just being "sad". Its an actual medical condition that requires medication and therapy to overcome.

the phils transition started back when Abreu was traded. They needed to change the culture of the clubhouse. At the time Abreu was seen as a lazy player who relied too much on talent and less on hard word. Since then Utley has been the leader on and off the field. Others are important like Rollins, Howard etc. But its Utley's work ethic, quiet confidence that has led the Phils to where they are today.
Remember that Charlie Manual has compared him favorably to the best and most prepared players he's ever had and that's quite a long list.

Guessing the Dodgers would have preferred DePodesta having chosen Yovani Gallardo over Orenduff in that draft....oh well.
