Odds & Ends: Red Sox, Bell, Acta, Rays

Another October day without baseball?  Drown your sorrows in some links...

  • Peter Abraham, in his new gig with the Boston Globe, thinks the Red Sox will tread cautiously with Japanese players like Yusei Kikuchi because of the "tug-of-war" they've gone through with Daisuke Matsuzaka concerning his conditioning methods.  The Sox are among several teams scheduled to meet with Kikuchi in Japan later this week.
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock fields a question about arbitration-eligible closer Heath Bell in his latest inbox.  Bell is set for a substantial pay raise after tallying 42 saves in 2009.  Should the Padres try to deal him this winter?
  • Former Nationals skipper Manny Acta had a phone interview with Indians GM Mark Shapiro last week to discuss the Tribe's managing vacancy, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  Acta will also interview Friday for the Astros' opening.
  • According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays have hired former Astros pitching coach Dewey Robinson to their minor league staff.

Trade Dice-K for a prospect or two.

What would that solve?

It would eat some money. us those prospects for a bigger trade.

Trade for Dice-K? Could you pick a worse target for a team like the Padres?

Seriously he needs to be moved. Having a high priced closer on a weak, cheap team is not a good use of resources. Also, Bell can only go down. I doubt he repeats his 2009 performance in '10.

You would likely have to eat a large portion of Dicek's salary to acquire any prospects of value.

The best bet is to hold onto him, hope his finish to 09 can continue in 2010, and pencil in him as your #4.

put dice-k in a package for prince. have bowden dice-k anderson kalish.

abraham isnt talking about moving dice-k, just about how his inconsistancy will effect the way the sox deal with free agent japanese pitchers in the future.
overall the sox have been very successful with the japanese pitchers theyve employed so im not sure its even an issue.
im sure they arent complaining about okajima or saito... and even tazawa looks like he might be a good investment once he's put in some time in at pawtucket. he did spend less than a year in the minors before being called up.
anyways, obtaining young talent before theyve developed proffessional conditioning systems might even be entirely different from dealing with a guy like dice who is more established.

NO! Why does everyone think Daisuke has a bad contract? He has 3 yrs $28 million left on his contract. That is a great deal, I don't think you guys understand the market whatsoever. If I see one more person say the Red Sox would need to eat money on the deal I'm gonna go crazy...

The Red Sox would have to eat money on any deal with Dicek

From the comments I've read from you, I assume you have some type of mental disability so you receive a pass.

You do realize that the only reason I said that was your little rank right?

You do realize that the only reason I said that was your little rank right?

Look at Matsuzaka anyway that you want, only then try and think of it like this? Boston every year brings in a rehab style pitcher, sort of like Matsuzaka anyway. Just why would they want to PAY somebody to take him, when they already have a guy on the payroll that fits the bill perfectly for the type of project pitcher they look for each off season anyway, not to mention, one they have already had 3 months to finally convince that they know best how to fix his shoulder (that is the problem) and get him back to where he was the previous 2 years? Boston's FO would be thrilled if he would just get back to where he was the previous 2 seasons, 5-6IP per game even would be fine, the guy had good results and shuts the opposing team down well, even while "fiddling" a bit too much perhaps with people on base.

They are not going to give him away, pay a chunk of salary to give him away (ala Lugo) for salary relief, so please stop that nonsense. Matsuzaka still has talent, unlike Smoltz and Lugo, the last 2 castoffs that are running on empty.

Pretty sure Dice-K has a NTC.

Dice-K isnt going to get traded for a host of reasons, but his contract isnt one of them. He is a maddeningly inconsistent pitcher, but can at times dominate. He still has value, but he is more valued because of the media attention and market in Japan. Revenue is revenue regardless of where it comes from. But he wont be traded when he is at his low value, mainly cause he is worth more then his contract in revenue to the Red Sox. On the other hand. Anyone thinking he would net any thing of value currently is wrong as well thou, but not cause of his contract. Its cause of the concern his conditioning and work ethic. He also does have a NTC, so he could ask for more money/benefits, which usually lowers the return for the player.

About Bell, he can be traded or signed to a two year deal, depends on whats being offered in both. If he agrees to a two year deal at about 3-4 mil a season do it. If there is a team willing to give up a solid package for him do it. But stay within bounds on both. Dont over pay him (contract) or under sell him (trade).

Bell and (Headley or Kouz) in some sort of package for a young but mlb tested bat at CF, C, or 2B for the Padres. New management should target dialogue with teams in need of 3B and/or bullpen, inc Marlins, Twins, Phillies, Seattle, St. Louis, Detroit. I would like to see the new GM target Uggla, BJ Upton (maybe Navarro too if they don't want him), Granderson, Franklin Gutierrez, Asdrubal Cabrera, among others. I'm sure a package with a young capable 3B and the NL saves leader might be tempting to someone.

I have no opinion whatsoever regarding the state of the Red Sox with the exception of politely asking their fans to let go of any Adrian Gonzalez dreams.

@agonzo23: BJ Upton would be perfect fit in SD. But I dont see the Rays giving up on him yet, or at the least he wont come without a major price to pay (my gut is they would ask for Blanks). Uggla does nothing for the Padres, we should be looking for a more atheltic MI then that, ie one with speed. Granderson is a nice idea, but I dont see the Padres adding 24 million over 3 years for him (thou its nice to think they might). The Indians have little depth in the middle field to be trading Cabrera, but if LaPorta could play the OF then maybe Guierrez can be had.

I agree with the teams you listed thou. They are the ones that might have interest in one of 3rd basemen. But its matching up thats hard, Twins have much the same problems we have, unless we want Gomez. Phillies prospect we like are going to be highly valued and not likely dealt for Headley or Kouz. The Tigers/Ms/Cards, all have the same problem, lack of near MLB ready CF/SS/2B that they would be willing to trade. Marlins are the wild card.

Personally I thinking two seperate deals, One with the Twins for a prospect or two for Kouz or Headley. The flip said prospects with Bell to the Rays for BJ Upton. But its not likely to happen. As the Rays need catching (as the Padres do) and maybe pitching, or maybe a DH/1B to take over for Pena.

Edit: First I spell his name wrong then I get the team wrong. Great day. Gutierrez of the Mariners. Disregard my comment about LaPorta.

"I have no opinion whatsoever regarding the state of the Red Sox with the exception of politely asking their fans to let go of any Adrian Gonzalez dreams."

You can blame a multitude of things for that. The liberal media machine churning out hogwash in the new England papers. SD in constant payroll downsizing. There is an awful lot more to it than fans.

@Airman: I agree with pretty much everything in your post. Most of what i said was just to stimulate discussion other than the same RedSox stuff (no offense Nation). For instance, throwing Asud Cabrera out there was just a pipe dream of mine wanting a promising 2B that hits. I disagree with Uggla not doing anything for us though. He would be our Kouz, but much better with power bat yet less with the glove. Although Uggla ain't fast by any stretch, he is no more a liability on base than Eck. Plus we'll still have Eck for defensive replacement. More importantly will be that obtaining Uggla will make us more athletic at 3B w/ Headley (hopefully) and in the OF if we can obtain a CF (anybody please, even Cameron would be great).

Little rank? I have no idea what you are talking about.

I wish that comments would stop being deleted. There was an original post suggesting that Dice-K to the Padres would make sense. Once that was deleted it made all of the responses to that post look silly.

As for Dice-K's value ... using Fangraphs, Dice-K has been worth an average of $11m over his first 3 seasons. Of course, this year he was worth a paltry $2.5m.

This year he averaged 5 innings per start. He was good for a tad over 5 innings in 2008. 2007 he peaked at an average of 6 innings.

He is a #3 starter on a good day (better than average ERA, 6IP) and back of the rotation guy on a bad day. In today's market I don't think that equals a 3/$30 type deal.

I'm not sure that the Sox are going to have to eat money if they decide to ship him. They might. I would be shocked if they received anything of value unless they do.

Think about this ... if Dice-K were to be traded the Sox paid approximately $25m/year for him. Ouch.

Harrison; I know your 15 but please start doing your homework before you start spitting out trade proposals.Havent you understood anything others have written?.Dicek's contract is as much for him to be the #3 guy in the sox rotation as it is for business reasons with japan..Plus that NTC he has along with all those perks the sox give him..This isnt PS3 or fantasy baseball..Dice is going nowhere and unlike your other comment that dice should bring back 4 prospects. He wouldnt come close to 4 prospects..Bad idea to trade him all the way around..

Dice-K is not getting traded. Period. Next...

chowdah-
i understand y dice-k isn't getting traded. Is it a possibility that the red sox make a trade for curtis granderson?

harrison; maybe if we dont sign bay but still not sure..only if Tigers are trying to shed payroll..anyway, hers what granderson is owed for the next 4yrs..10:$5.5M, 11:$8.25M, 12:$10M, 13:$13M club option ($2M buyout)
2013 option increases to:

$15M if MVP (1st - 5th) in 2011 or 2012

$14M if All Star in 2011 or 2012

$13.5M if All Star selection in 2011 or 2012

The tigers have a few contracts they would unload before Grandersons..that and hes a solid CF and a good team guy on and off ther field..I would think that Maggs(18mil), guillen(10:$13M, 11:$13M),Willis(12mil),Robertson(10mil) would come first..

The Tigers have a lot of brutal contracts, but most of those end after 2010.

Ordonez, Bonderman, Willis, Robertson, and Inge come off the books after 2010, dumping $59.1M off their payroll.

They'll still have 5/106 on Cabrera, 1/13 on Guillen, 2/20.25 on Granderson, and the increasing salaries of guys like Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Laird, Raburn and Thames, assuming that all of those guys are still around, but that's an awful lot of money to dump after 2009.

The Tigers get out of their financial issues in a year, but the Cubs are going to lack financial flexibility for at least the first couple years of the next decade.

Would the Red Sox be willing to get willis if tigers drop him? I doubt the tigers will trade miguel cabrea, but if they do, i think he would be a good fit in boston. what do u think?

We had the chance to pick up willis last year in a bad contract trade with Lugo..Willis makes way too much to take a chance on..that anxiety thing really killed his career..Id LOVE to have miggy in a sox uni..I doubt that would ever happen though...The way theo is talking, the way Im hearing it, is that hes gonna go get a few pieces and let these guys finish out their contracts next year and then go shopping...he always leaves every possibility open in his interviews..

after the 2010 season, the sox, as it stands now, would lose beckett 12mil,Papi 12.5mil,Lowell 12mil,and Lugos 9mil..thats about 45mil off the payroll..then drews 14mil after 2011 providing his shoulder stays healthy, then they dont have to pick up Drews 11' year...which would bring it to a whopping 59mil...

hey chowdah,
what are the chances of boston trading beckett at the deadline in 2010? how many prospects is he worth? I was thinking it would be nice to get J.J Putz. I would also like to get rich harden. do u agree with me?

AirmanSD and agonzo23, you guys are on the right track. First we commit to resigning Gonzalez. Second we deal Bell and Blanks for Upton and a mid level prospect. Thirdly we trade Kouz to the Twins for Gomez. Yes I'd hate to see Blanks go, but he belongs at 1st or DH, not roaming huge Petco. Some are down on Gomez, but he is still young and was the center piece of the Santana trade just 2 years ago. Give him a little time. I think these moves help all teams involved and being a Padre fan I would be quite excited to see them happen.
