Odds & Ends: Torre, Braves, Blue Jays

In the midst of a tight Dodgers-Phillies game, here are some news tidbits from around the baseball world....

  • Before Game Five, Joe Torre said he wants to (and believes he will) be the Dodgers' manager next season, reports Mike Jensen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that Frank Wren is in a bit of a Catch-22 when it comes to re-signing Tim Hudson and Adam LaRoche, and/or trading Kenshin Kawakami or Derek Lowe for hitting help.
  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports that new Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has spent his first few weeks on the job talking to the team's coaches and players.  After talking to pending free agents Marco Scutaro, Rod Barajas and John McDonald, Anthopoulos said he wants to speak to their respective agents in the coming weeks.
  • As reported by Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Mark Cuban told a group of Pitt students that he won't be buying the Pirates.
  • Speaking of Pittsburgh natives looking to be involved in MLB ownership, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan said that Pittsburgh lawyer Check Greenberg's investment team made with members of the Hicks Sports Group on Wednesday to discuss buying the Rangers.
  • Tommy Rancel of the DRaysBay blog outlines why he thinks the Rays should look into signing Kelvim Escobar this off-season.

Schultz should stick to NFL, NBA, and the collegiate sports.

Sorry but if the Jays are going to talk contract with Scutaro then it should be his 2009 base 2.65M plus performance bonuses on matching 2009 numbers. He is coming off a career year and should be compensated on what he is going to do in 2010 not on what he did in 2009.

lowe won't get much hitting help sense his high whip and era were pretty bad last year, that and his contract for three more years(?)

I just had to write in my take on what the Dodgers need to do this off-season with a few guess about what they will do. Some of it is obvious enough, but if you're interested, check it out here at andrewfaris.blogspot.com and let me know what you think!

Kelvim Escobar would probably be a solid pickup for pretty much any team. He's actually good, is going to come cheap, and can work as a SP or RP.

It's just which team is smart enough to sign him.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Torre got fired from two straight jobs while never missing the playoffs?

That Schultz story has to be the absolute best Boras slam story have ever read.. Just classic.

If LaRoche does somehow manage to luck out and find a fool to give him a 3 year contract some where else, does anybody see Wren looking at Nick Johnson and trying to get him for 1-2 years max, defensive liabilities and all?

Johns, I may be wrong on this, but I think Johnson's defense is fine. He is just really injury prone. that is why he will get 2 year contract MAX.

Scutaro will not be in Toronto next year, He's coming of a career year so who ever offers the most money thats were he'll be playing.

The Yankees did not fire Torre. He turned down their contract offer.

Why would it be foolish to give a 3 year contract to a 29 year old good defensive first baseman who hits 25 - 30 home runs every year?? IMO, the Braves will be foolish NOT to give him a 2 - 3 year contract. This is particularly true given Freddie Freeman's struggles so far in the AFL.

As for Nick Johnson, no thanks. He can't stay healthy and he has no power.

"Kelvim Escobar would probably be a solid pickup for pretty much any team. He's actually good, is going to come cheap, and can work as a SP or RP."

Yeah, he's a good pitcher when he's healthy, he's consistently been one of the better starters in the AL when healthy, although he's made one start in the past two years, and his xFIP's have been consistently higher than his normal FIP's.

He's definitely a nice potential buy-low for someone, especially because he's getting less recognition than other guys like Bedard, Myers, Hudson and Duchscherer.

"The Yankees did not fire Torre. He turned down their contract offer."

That's just a semantics argument. They offered him a pay decrease to stay.

And, drz, if he took it he would be coaching the Yankees. It's not semantics. They dared not fire him after all he accomplished, and they didn't. No way the Dodgers will let him go. He did a great job with a team filled with issues, starting with Manny.
