Rockies Notes: Marquis, Betancourt, Giambi

Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies examines Colorado's commitments for 2010, and the decisions they'll face regarding potential free agents and arbitration cases. Here are a few of his thoughts:

  • Jason Marquis has said he wants to sign with the Mets and likely won't be back in Colorado.
  • There's a good chance that lefty Alan Embree will retire.
  • Jose Contreras is interested in returning in a middle relief capacity, but Matt Belisle is a younger option for the team in that role.
  • The club would like to retain Rafael Betancourt, but his contract would have to be reworked. Betancourt has a $5.4MM club option for 2010.
  • Behind the plate, Chris Iannetta will be back as the starter. Yorvit Torrealba could return as Ianetta's backup, but probably not for more than $1MM.
  • The team may not have room for Jason Giambi, instead opting to use his roster spot on a right-handed hitter who can play both infield corners.
  • Righty relievers Juan Rincon and Matt Herges could receive minor-league invites.

Well, guess the Rockies are safe offering arbitration to Marquis. He's a Type B guy, so the Mets should have no hesitation about signing him if he wants to come there. Wonder what his demands will be? Probably a carbon copy of his last deal: 3/21.

Please no Jason Marquis unless it is a deal similar to Reddings last year.

Notice to Tim, et el; I am 2 steps away from removing this RSS feed entirely because of its useless (and redundant) 30 posts a day and general begging for attention. Be good, and people will flock. Be desperate, and people will dismiss.

You need to attract better posters, as well, because the elementary school you summoned ain't cutting it. i.e, they're idiots.

Good luck

Dirty_Water, aren't you a sunny fellow. I fail to see what that post of yours has to do with the topic at hand. I believe, if you were unhappy about this, you could e-mail your concerns to Tim Dierkes himself PRIVATELY. Not a single person on this site want to hear about your problem, especially opinions that have nothing to do about baseball. While I'm sure Tim and company appreciate any and all suggestions, all you're doing is taking up space on this board. If you see a problem with this site, perhaps the SMART thing to do would be to help in finding a way to make it better, instead of b*tching about it and not offering any suggestions for improvement. You're no better than the "idiots" who, as you say, are summoned to this site.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand, the Rockies don't need Marquis. He regressed big time in the second half, and with a solid young core, they're better off using that money to fix their bench, that is, replacing Atkins and/or finding an upgrade at 2B. He most likely will end up with the Mets, as they need stability in their rotation, and he'd be a pretty solid MOR guy to a team with many pitching questions.

Betancourt will be re-signed, as he was lights out since coming over from Cleveland, and while Contreras was a nice vet pickup, I think the most he'll be getting this offseason is a minor league deal.

Please no Jason Marquis unless it is a deal similar to Reddings last year.

Thank you for being sensible. Marquis was awful after the all-star break. The fact that his teams have made the post-season each year is coincidence. He's only pitched in the post-season 5 years.

I was in favor of bringing Marquis in last off season. I think his durability is a plus for a MOR guy. Also doesn't hurt he's been to the playoffs 9 straight years or something like that. Bring the good vibes lol, then again the mets would be the team to break that streak. Since he's a NY guy, and said he wanted to come here, he's not a #2 but if they could do a 2/12M or 3/15? I would be all about it.

Though they would need another bargain bin SP with high end potential (harden, sheets, bedard?)

Lackey and Marquis to fix the rotation for the Mets. Also sign Dave Duncan he'll refine Pelfrey (see Piniero) and maybe fix Perez.

Apparently you didn't see the quote from Duncan yesterday! He's not going anywhere...sorry

Dirty_Water,

You think you could do better? I'm sure this a real tough time to scrape up some rumors, and they're just trying to keep the MLBTR fans entertained, and they're doing a pretty good job, BTW. Thank you, Tim & co.

Anyways, Marquis, IMO, will be a Met next year. I have little doubt about it. It just makes sense, for both ends. Also, he's been sort of a good luck charm for every team he's been with. Maybe Omar is supersticious.

And, as a Braves fan, I really hope that (if he does sign with NY) it doesn't work out, and the Mets have another atrocious season. Sorry Mets fans.

Ahh my bad forgot bout that. Well make do with Warthen (blehh). Should get Jaramillo or however u spell his name.

wheres maine?? perez is better off selling hotdogs! maine is good and id rather go after harden and bay or abreu than lacky

Dirty Water, it's morons like you who make me dislike Sox/Yanks fans.

NOT EVERY POST CAN BE ABOUT THE RED SOX AND YANKEES. GET OVER IT.

Maine goes to the bullpen. I think his shoulder problems make him more suited for a Bobby Parnell esque role. We paid Perez and he still has some upside. If he can be the OK Ollie, hes an above average 5th starter, albeit for 12 mil a year.

The Mets should offer Maine arbitration, he is still young, very affordable and should be healthy for the 2010 season. I wouldnt spend the money on Marquis (3 year/$21mil most likely). He is not a #2 guy and the Mets need that money to acquire a solid #2 starter like Lackey or Halladay (if available). I can also see the Mets vest in a 1 yr deal w/ incentives for another pitcher like Bedard/Harden/Sheets-if healthy. A starting rotation of Santana/Halladay or Lackey/Pelfrey/Bedard or Harden or Sheets/Maine with Perez starting in the bullpen until he gets it. Added depth, Niese, Misch and Nieve waiting in the wings for spot starts and or injuries would be fine.

Well, guess the Rockies are safe offering arbitration to Marquis. He's a Type B guy, so the Mets should have no hesitation about signing him if he wants to come there. Wonder what his demands will be? Probably a carbon copy of his last deal: 3/21.

He isn't worth more than 5 mill per so that would be a horrible deal.
