The Brewers declined their $3.7MM club option on reliever David Weathers, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy (via Twitter). They'll pay a $400K buyout instead. While Weathers projects as a Type B free agent, an arbitration offer is highly unlikely. The Brewers acquired Weathers from the Reds in August for cash.
Weathers, 40, posted a 3.92 ERA in 62 innings this year. His peripherals were pretty bad - 5.4 K/9, 4.1 BB/9, 1.5 HR/9.

I second that. So far I'm liking all of the payroll trimming... makes me more optimistic that Melvin has plans in motion for some Free Agent signings.

How he posted an ERA under 4, we will never know.

Smart move by the Brewers. They're limiting their payroll obligations and should use that money on the FA market for pitchers. I wouldn't be surprised to hear them announce soon that Cameron won't be back. I wonder who they're targeting, starter wise? I'm guessing they take a look at Sheets, among others.

It's time for Weathers to start thinking about retirement. His career is near the end.

ok here's my calcs - i've got 23 people on the 25 man roster for 2010 and the total comes to a bit over $72 mil in my projections and we have no starting catcher really...here's my 23
Suppan, Counsell, Bush, Weeks, McClung, Fielder, Braun, Hart, Villanueva, Gallardo, Rivera, Parra, Hoffman, Coffey, DiFelice, Escobar, Gamel, McGehee, Salome, Smith, Stetter, Vargas, & Gomez
we could non-tender/trade the following players and save some money-
included on my list: McClung (~$2 mil), Villy (~$1.2 mil), Bush (~$4.5 mil), Vargas (~$1.2 mil) and Hart (~$4.25 mil)
not included on my list: Gerut (~$2 mil), Catalanotto (~$2 mil), Kendall (~$5 mil), Looper ($5.5 mil)
we could also buy out Suppan or Riske for some cash savings of some sort but we're only talking maybe $1-2 mil probably
i'd say we max out at opening day payroll at $90 mil and will probably land around $83-88 mil, so we have $11-17 mil to realistically spend on those two roster spots, but we can clear another $13 mil and open up 5 more roster spots if we non-tender/trade those other players

ps - my $72 mil includes Hall's full 2010 salary, not sure how much we saved from Seattle or if Brewers view that as an 09 expense or 2010
