Cafardo On Gonzalez, Nady, Mulder

Nick Cafardo's latest column for the Boston Globe is a lengthy one, and is full of hot stove discussion and speculation. Let's take a look....

  • After Ken Rosenthal expressed skepticism about Boston's ability to acquire Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres, Cafardo declares that it's the one move the Red Sox have to make to keep up with the Yankees. Although he presents a lengthy argument for why it could work, he never specifically addresses what players the Sox could send to San Diego, which was the sticking point for Rosenthal.
  • Xavier Nady would like to return to the Yankees, but doesn't know if they'll want him back. "I know I can go out there and be a productive starting player for someone," Nady says. As Cafardo points out though, after Nady's injury-plagued 2009, many teams would probably prefer to sign him as a fourth outfielder.
  • Cafardo thinks the Los Angeles Dodgers should consider signing Pedro Martinez to a half-year deal in 2010, and that Philadelphia could be a good fit for Billy Wagner.
  • The Jeremy Hermida acquisition raises questions about Rocco Baldelli's future as a Red Sox. Baldelli says he enjoyed Boston and would love to return, but that the team hasn't informed him of their plans yet.
  • "It would be an upset" if Mark Mulder signed anywhere but Milwaukee.
  • One baseball official tells Cafardo that the New York Yankees might be a bit reluctant to re-sign Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui because "they’re afraid of sticking with a guy too long. They’d rather get rid of a guy a year sooner, ahead of his decline, than a year later."

It will be flat out hilarious if Mark Mulder is the big signing for the Brewers.

The starting pieces of a deal could be Casey Kelly and Ryan Westmoreland. With that said, I don't see how the Red Sox couldn't make a deal done with those two atop of their offer.

I think Hoyer will deal him, but he's going to fleece some of the Red Sox top prospects before it's said and done.

Isn't the Wagner-Philadelphia bridge pretty thoroughly burned?

Agreed, bigpat, it is funny. Seriously, it has to be the minor move of the Brewers pitching offseason. Melvin made assurances to Peterson he would bring in pitching. This can't be it.

aap212,

Cafardo's Wagner/Philly suggestion did come with the caveat that "there may be some bad blood" there. I can't imagine the Phillies would be his first choice...

Why don't the Brewers go after somebody that's proven he can stay healthy and pitch? Is this really the person that's going to "help"?

I don't know about Ken Griffey Jr. Do you guys think he'll go another year.

Is Sheets return to Milwaukee a complete non-option?

I wonder what the status of Nady is?

The Red Sox probably will make a big trade; they have the prospects, they have the need, and they don't like bidding on free agents. Ortiz, Lowell, and Beckett will all walk away next year ast Type A free agents. If Papelbon is still on the team after 2011, he likely will too. That's a lot of extra picks to restock the farm from an A-Gone trade.

Gammons also mentioned the (highly unlikely) possibility that Beckett is traded. Would a package like the Indians got for Lee do it? Bedard? They could pile up on prospects over the next couple years and even a big FA signing like Holliday would only take away one of those picks. They know the Rays and O's are lurking and the Yankees will be spending; the Red Sox won't stand still.

1B. Gonzo/Youk
2B. Pedroia
SS Scutaro
3B Figgins
LF Holliday
CF Ells
RF Drew
C Martinez
DH Gonzo/Youk

SP
King Felix
Beckett
Lester
Dice K
Wake? (possibly another low budget player)

My dream team. Dought they can pull of a trade for both King Felix and Gonzo but maybe a three team trade with the M's and Padres? This is completely dream team.. i don't think this could possibly happen..well it could..but i would dought it.

If the Sox are able to get Gonzales I hope they are able to hold onto Westy...wouldn't mind losing Lars, Casey Kelly and others. I like Kelly but I think he is just years ahead of his age in terms of knowing how to pitch and his stuff points more to being a nice Jered Weaver type #2/3...which is great but replaceable with a large payroll team.

I'm not sure the Sox would move Westy anyways, I think part of his agreement to pass on college was a verbal agreement to stay with his hometown team and not be moved.

Gotta give to get. IMO, we can't afford to deal Buchholz or Bard. Any major trade pieces would have to come from the minor leagues. Buchholz will take over Beckett's spot in the rotation and Bard is our next closer.

I'd hate to give up Westmoreland, because he'd be a perfect replacement for Drew in a few years, but I'd deal him for Adrian Gonzalez in a heartbeat.

The Jed Hoyer situation has far morpe potetntial to work against the Red Sox than it does for them. I know a lot of Padres' fans have made posts along the lines of "If Hoyer doesn't get this guy, this guy, this guy, etc", but the truth is, Hoyer isn't going to do Boston any favors just like Byrnes didn't and just like Epstein didn't do any for San Diego.

If Hoyer gets a package of names people did not suspect, the reality is people should be thinking 1) what does he know about these players and 2) what does he know about Kelly, Westmoreland, Bard, etc.?

This much we all get, he knows Boston's farm system better than anyone who posts on these boards. So if he does take an unanticipated package, there is most defintely a reason...

It also helps Theo in negotiations, because he knows who Hoyer values above others. Say for instance, he values our promising young catcher Luis Exposito. A deal with Kevin Towers in the past would've meant all blue-chip prospects and not very many high ceiling type of players like Exposito. With Hoyer in SD, Theo can trade an Exposito or Pimental because he knows that Hoyer values those players. In the end, the Red Sox will still have to pony up 1-2 blue-chippers, but the rest of the deal could be filled with players that are unknown to non-Sox fans.

YanksFanSince78, no, it is not a non-option. Both sides have expressed some interest in a contract, but, Doug Melvin should be wary of Sheets' injury history, of which he knows very well.

Mulder would be interesting, perhaps to take the place of our other Cardinal's castoff, Jeff Suppan, as the 5th starter.

However, we need a big pitcher. John Lackey would be the best free agent we could possibly get. I expect us to compete for him, but I'm not sure we can get him. Maybe a Joel Piniero type would be good. However, I think we could trade Gamel and Hart or something like it for a good, quality #2 guy.

I'd be very surprised to see Westmoreland, given his handshake agreement not to be traded, Buchholz, Bard, or Exposito, as he is really our only promising catching prospect that isn't more than a year or two away be moved in trades this offseason. Frankly I see anyone else as fair game, and I think the BoSox with make a big push for Adrian, whether or not they get him is up in the air, but they'll sure as hell try, but I think Theo knows there is a certain other need we have that we can't open ourselves up to by filling another one, that is losing effective starting pitching that we can't immediately replace in Buchholz, or trading away our only real catching prospect that we will certainly need if we don't get Mauer, which is much more likely than most Sox fans would like to admit, since he'll probably sign an extension with Minnesota.

Frankly it seems silly that the Red Sox have to acquire one particular player in order to keep up with the Yankees. It also seem silly to suggest that the Red Sox could acquire that player on a whim or at their leisure. How about looking at the deal from San Diego's point of view first instead of the Sox POV? That sort of changes the landscape doesn't it?

Milwaukee may look at Mulder but it would seem that they've cleared enough payroll to go after Lackey if they wanted. Not bringing back Looper would make it all that much more feasible. With Suppan coming off the books soon it would make a ton of sense given their needs.

"they’re afraid of sticking with a guy too long. They’d rather get rid of a guy a year sooner, ahead of his decline, than a year later."

That's true, but if they're your best option then you go with them without making a long-term committment.

I don't think the Sox are serious about going after Adrian Gonzalez... I think its the media needing to write a story and they figure that since the Red Sox made an offer to Teixeira that they will be after another first baseman. I don't think the Sox try and force any moves this offseason, rather letting the deals come to them. Numerous teams throughout the league are looking to shed some salary such was the case with the Marlins trading Jeremy Hermida. The Red Sox will hold their offer to Jason Bay out there until they sign Matt Holliday or find another option. Its going to be Bay's choice if he wants to come back to the Sox or not. I personally think that the Sox best move this offseason will be to sign Adrian Beltre. His offense was in a decline last year due to injury but his defense is probably the best in the league and left side defense was one of the Sox major problems last year.

soxcurse- dont you think the Hoyer situation HURTS Theo in negotiations? I have to think Hoyer knows how much Theo values each player. Say Player X is highly regarded in the media, but Theo and Hoyer both are low on him- Theo could possibly give that player off to another GM who values him higher, while Hoyer wouldnt take that player because Hoyer knows something.

It's basically trying to make a deal with yourself, AND trying to win it.
Just a thought.

"It's basically trying to make a deal with yourself, AND trying to win it.
Just a thought."

I don't think any GM is necessarily trying to "win" a trade. Going into it with that kind of mindset is going to limit future negotiations with that GM. In a perfect world the trade is a win for both teams.

@Deanezag

Not exactly. Hoyer was one of the main people behind the deal for Beckett, while Theo was gone. Theo is said to have been against the deal, and he valued Hanley more. It is very possible they value guys differently, and can both "win" the deal. If Hoyer thinks dealing Gonzalez is necessary, he's gonna go out and get the best package possible. If he ends up with 4 guys to build upon for the future, he wins. If Theo gets Adrian Gonzalez and they win the World Series, he wins.

What about a blockbuster deal . . .

Atlanta trades:
Kris Medlen
Jordan Schafer
Freddie Freeman
Craig Kimbrel
Other Piece or two

Atlanta Gets:
Adrian Gonzalez
Heath Bell

or if you're a NY Fan.

Joba/Hughes as the centerpiece for Adrian

Yeah, I can understand that view of 'winning' the trade too.

mzalicious- Yankees need another 1B because?

@Deanezag - DH spot. Rotate him and Tex from 1B to DH.

From there just upgrade your RF spot with a real right fielder and move Swisher to LF. Meaning no Holliday or Bay. They need someone that actually has an arm in RF

i love this constant battle of who can out-do eachother between the Yankees and the Red Sox. The fact is that the Yankees can afford to take HUGE revenue risks and the Red Sox can't (at least to the same extent).

I think the Yanks should let both Damon and Matsui walk...they dont need them. They could go after a full-time DH like Carlos Delgado or they could go after a guy like Chone Figgins and solve the leadof spot, moving moving Swisher into a DH role. I think getting a LH Power bat to take advantage of their RF Wall

nady would be a good fit for the white sox, buy low at a 2 year deal until some youngters are ready, he could put up big numbers at the cell

I am not against getting Adrian Gonzalez however I would look for other options. The other option I am talking about is Miguel Cabrera. Now before I get ripped by baseball fans there is a scenario that could arise in which Cabrera might be avialable.

The Tigers are in the sh**s. Their payroll is too high and have overpaid players. Like, Magglio Ordonez and Dontrelle Willis. Those two have little to no value in trading and both are on rental deals. But this year like the 2 previous years the Tigers could lose up to 20% of revenue. The economy is so bad in Detroit.

I would like to see something like Youkilis and a Prospect for Miguel Cabrera.

It is a fair trade, lesser salary and more defense for youth and more pop.

If you compare Adrian Gonzalez to Miguel Cabrera their stats are comparable however Miggy runs away with his avg.

What this trade also does is gives Theo more bullets to get another player, like King Felix or Hanley Ramirez.

I think Theo could do some damage this off-season, it all depends on how he allocates his resources when making deals(money, prospects and major league talent). For example if Theo has Felix then trades Beckett, I am okay with that as long as, another pitcher is coming aboard, like a FA signing. I think a Beckett, Lowell, and cash trade to the Dodgers could happen...

If Epstein really wants to he could get 2 or even 3 of Felix, Cabrera/Gonzalez, or Hanley Ramirez.

Gonzalez has said time after time that he wants to stay in San Diego, his hometown.

He has never even intimated that he wants to leave.

Cafardo is full of it there.

To say the Padres are years away from mattering is a crock as well.

The Padres had one of the best records in baseball the final 2 1/2 months of the 2009 season and are a starting pitcher and a big bat away from contending in the NL West.

In other words they could contend in 2010 or 2011.

And they are young enough that they could contend for 4 or 5 years before the young players price themselves out of San
Diego's budget.

And finally, the REd Sox do not have the talent to go and get Aerian Gonzalez without stripping the system of all of their top level talent and sending at least one major league piece as well.

Cafardo is dreaming.

He places too much importance on a Red Sox team that will be hard pressed to contend for the AL east Title in 2010.

i love this constant battle of who can out-do eachother between the Yankees and the Red Sox. The fact is that the Yankees can afford to take HUGE revenue risks and the Red Sox can't (at least to the same extent).

Yeah, Boston is cash strapped? What a joke.

So you want to get rid of Matsui (a full time DH who has thrived as a Yankee) to bring in Delgado (another full-time DH). Where's the benefit? Also you say we should let Matsui and Damon walk but then say they need to acquire a LH power bat. Both Matsui and Damon are LF so why not just keep one or both?

If he's healthy Xavier Nady is a top 90 outfielder and a top 30 right or left fielder. Any team that can get him at 4th outfielder money is getting a terrific deal and will have depth in the outfield.
